Notes:• Read these instructions before installing the TRG-001A• GeneralMotorsGenIIIV8enginesusea24Xcrank

trigger wheel and a reluctor wheel on the camshaft. The 24X reluctor wheel uses two different width notches (12° and3°)thatare15°apart.TheGenIIIcamshaftpositionsensorismountedinthebackoftheblockbehindtheintakemanifold.

• EarlyGenIVV8enginesusethissame24Xreluctorwheelbutthenhavethecamshaftpositionsensormountedinthetimingcoverandhaveasingletoothcamshaftreluctorbuiltinto the timing gear.

• ThenewerGenIVV8enginesusea58Xcranktriggerwheel (60 evenly spaced teeth with 2 missing teeth) and a fourtoothreluctorbuiltintothetiminggear.

• TheTRG-001Atakesthesignalsfromthe58XbasedenginesandconvertsthemtowhatthePCMorECMfor24Xbasedenginesareexpectingtosee.Thisallowsthenewer58Xenginestobeinstalledinoldervehiclesthatoriginallyhad24Xengines.

• TheTRG-001Aisdesignedtoconnecttothestockcrankshaft(CKP)&camshaft(CMP)positionsensorsonaGenIVV8engineequippedwitha58Xcrankshaftreluctoranda4Xcamshaftreluctor(timing gear).

• The58XCKPsensor(GMpart#12585546)isgrayincolorandhasadifferentconnectorkeythanthe24XCKPsensor.

• The24XCKPsensor(GMpart#12560228)isblackincolorandwillNOTworkwiththe58Xcrankshaftreluctor,soyoucannotusethesensorfromyourexistingGenIIIV8engine.

• Mostcrateenginesorenginesremovedfromothervehiclesshouldalreadyhavethecorrectsensorsinstalledbutitisimportantthatyouchecktobesure.

• Thecamshaftsensormountedinthefronttimingcoverusedonthe1Xandthe4Xtiminggearsisthesameforeithergear(GMpart#12585545).

• SomeearlyGenIVV8engineshavethe24Xcrankshaftreluctorandthe1Xcamshaftreluctor(timinggear).IfyouareusingoneoftheseearlierGenIVenginesinyourLS1,LS6orotherGenIIIV8equippedvehiclethenyouDONOTneedtheTRG-001Atriggerconversionmodule.SeeTable1onpages10and11forinformationonwhatmakeandmodelyearvehicleshavewhattypeofcrankshaft reluctor wheel.

• Seetheimagesonpage9forexamplesofwhatthe58Xand24Xtriggerwheelslooklikeandwhatthe 4X and 1X camshaft timing gears look like.• To use the TRG-001A DO NOT change the front camshaft timing gear to a single tooth gear.• The TRG-001A is designed to work with the 4X camshaft timing gear (images A or B on page 9)

and the 58X crank trigger wheel (right lower image also on page 9).• Ifyouarenotsurewhatcrankshaftreluctorwheelyourenginehasyoucanremovethecrankshaft

positionsensorandlookthroughthesensormountingholetoseethereluctorwheelteeth.Foranimageofwhatthereluctorwheelteethlooklike,lookattheimagefoundatthebottomofpage9.

• The“CrankIn”and“CamIn”labelsontheTRG-001Arefertosensorsignal“In”fromthesensorsontheengineand“CrankOut”and“CamOut”labelsrefertothesignal“Out”fromtheTRG-001Atothevehicle’sECMorPCM.

• 58Xenginesuse5voltsensorsignalsand24Xenginesuse12volt sensor signals for the camshaft and crankshaft sensors. The TRG-001A takes the 12 volt power from the engine harness and converts it to a 5 volt supply for the 58X cam and crank sensors.• Thismeansthevoltagemeasuredonthe“CrankIn”and

“CamIn”wiresshouldbe5voltsignalsandthevoltagemeasuredonthe“CrankOut”and“CamOut”wiresshouldbe12voltsignals.

• InadditiontousingtheTRG-001Atoadaptthecamshaftandcrankshaftsensorsignals,youwillalsoprobablyneedtochangeconnectors,obtainadapterharnessesand/orchangepartsinordertousetheinjectors,MAPsensorand/orMAFsensoronthenewerengines(seetheOptionalItemslistonpage1forsomeexamples).ContactLPEoryourLPEdistributorformoredetailedpartsrecommendations.

• ThefactoryPowertrainControlModule(PCM)orEngineControlModule(ECM)willneedtobereprogrammed in order to properly run the new engine due to the different engine characteristics including:enginedisplacement,injectorsize,sparkrequirementchanges,MAPandMAFsensortype,RPMrange,throttlesize,etc.ReprogrammingtoolsareavailablefromLPEormanycompaniesoffercustom programming services and chassis dynamometer tuning services.

• Somevehiclesmayneedahigherflowfuelpumpinordertoprovidethecorrectamountoffuelforthenewengine.ContactLPEoryourLPEdistributorforfuelpumprecommendations.

• Oncamshaftphaserequippedengines(L92etc.)youwillneedtoswitchtoanon-camshaftphasercamshaft, timing gear and timing cover.

• TheTRG-001Ahasnotbeentestedinlatemodel24X8.1Ltruckengineapplications.• The TRG-001A is currently NOT designed to work on the front wheel drive GM V8 applications such

astheChevroletImpalaSS,ChevroletMonteCarloSS&PontiacGrandPrixGTP.• Important information regarding spark plug wires and spark plugs:

• As with most in-vehicle electronics, LPE recommends the use noise suppression ignition wires and resistor type spark plugs with this electronic control unit.

GTO,2003-2004SSR,1999-2006CKtrucksetc.)theCAMOUTconnectorontheTRG-001Aconnectsdirectlytothefactoryharnessconnectionthatwasatthebackoftheengine

• OnearlyGMGenIVV8engineequippedvehiclesthatusetheE40ECM(2005C6Corvette,2005-2006GTO,2005-2006SSR,2006TrailblazerSSetc.)theCAMOUTconnectorontheTRG-001A MUSTbeconnectedtothe“TRG-001CamOut”labeledconnectoronthesuppliedcamshaft output adapter harness (L480145305) and then the adapter harness connects to the factory camshaft connector harness location near the front of the engine. See the Addendum For E40 Controlled Vehicles on pages 6 for connecting the adapter harness on these vehicles.

• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCAMINtothecamshaftsensoronthefronttimingcover.NOTE - this should connect directly to the sensor and not to the intermediate harness attached to the outside of the timing cover.

• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCRANKOUTtotheconnectorontheenginewiringharnessthatwasconnectedtothecrankshaftsensorconnector(onthesideoftheengineblock).

• ConnecttheharnesslabeledCRANKINtothecrankshaftpositionsensoronthesideoftheblock.• SecuretheTRG-001Amoduleusingthesuppliedhookandlooptapeorusingthesuppliedself

tapping screws.• Mountinglocationwarnings/recommendations:

• TheTRG-001AisdesignedtowithstandsimilartemperaturestothefactoryECM/PCM.Careshouldbetakentomakesureitismountedinalocationthatdoesnotexposeittotemperaturesinexcessof250degF(120degC).

• Do not place the module in direct exposure to hot exhaust manifolds or other exhaust system components.

• If the unit will be in the line of site of exhaust system components make sure it is far away from the components and has a heat shield protecting it.

• Do not mount directly to the engine.• Reconnectthenegativebatteryterminal.

Light emitting diode (LED) STATUS light operation/diagnostic codes:• Solid REDindicatespoweredon/noinputsignalspresent(normalforkeyon/engineoff)• Solid GREEN indicates the TRG-001A has a valid crankshaft and camshaft signal and is in

synchronizedoperation• Blinking RED indicates no crankshaft signal in with a camshaft signal detected

• Checkconnectionsatthecrankshaftsensor.CheckthetachometerortheengineRPMwithascantoolwhilecrankingtheengine.IfnoRPMisshownwhilecrankingthentheTRG-001Aisnotoutputting a crankshaft signal.

• Blinking GREEN indicates no camshaft signal in with a crank signal detected• Theengineshouldstartbutyoumaysometimeshavetocranktheengineforalongtimebefore

itstarts.YoumostlikelydonothaveapropercamshaftsensorsignalintotheTRG-001A.Checkcamshaft sensor connections and wiring pin-outs.

• TheECM/PCMshouldsetacamshaftsensorDTC.• Blinking RED RED RED GREEN(threeredblinksfollowedbyagreenblink)indicatestheTRG-

001Alostcranksynchronizationandrecovered• Usuallyduetoelectricalnoiseorbadsensor/wiring.

• Blinking GREEN GREEN GREEN RED(threegreenblinksfollowedbyaredblink)indicatesaloss of camshaft signal.• Usuallyduetoelectricalnoiseorbadsensor/wiring.

• TheTRG-001Awillblinkeitherofthesetwolasterrorcodesonthethree(3)powerupcylcesaftertheproblemoccurs.Iftheerrordoesnotoccuragainduringthosethreepowerupsthenthecodewillclear.Ifanothercodeoccurspriortothecodeclearing,theoldercodewillbeclearedandthenewcodewillbestoredanddisplayed.

Troubleshooting:• IftheTRG-001AREDLEDdoesnotcomeonwhenyouturnontheignition,checkconnectionsat

the engine harness. No REDLEDindicatesnopowertotheTRG-001A.• The production 24X engine crankshaft and camshaft harness power feeds are 12 vdc. On key-on

youshouldbeabletomeasure12vdcbetweenpowerandgroundpinsfromtheengineharnessfor the crankshaft and camshaft sensors.

• The output from the TRG-001A (for the 58X type sensors) is 5 vdc.• Theharnesswirecolorsandsignals/voltagesarelabeledinthewiringdiagramsfoundonpages

7 and 8. • IfyouareexperiencingerraticoperationandintermittentdiagnosticlightsfromtheTRG-001Ait

maybeduetoelectricalnoise/interference.• TryreroutingtheTRG-001Aharnessand/orrelocatingtheTRG-001Aitselfawayfromhigh

voltage ignition related components (spark plug wires, coils etc.)• Someaftermarketsparkplugwireshavebeenfoundtocauseelectronicinteference.Wehighly

recommend using spark plug wires that provide OEM levels of noise surpression (the lowest resistancewireisNOTthebestwire)andthatyouuseresistortypesparkplugs.Ifyouarehavingintermitentproblemstryswitchingtostockoranotherbrandofsparkplugwirestoseeiftheproblemgoesaway.

• The minimum synchronization engine speed is 60 RPM. Your starter must be able to get the engine speed to 60 RPM or higher in order for the TRG-001A to output a signal and for the engine to start.

Addendum For E40 Controlled Vehicles(see chart on pages 10 & 11 for vehicle applications)

WARNING - failure to use the supplied adapter harness or failure to wire the adapter harness correctly can result in voltage being applied to the incorrect terminals to the TRG-001A and can cause failure of the TRG-001A. Damage to the TRG-001A due to incorrect wiring is NOT covered under warranty.

E40equippedvehiclesusetheGMGenIVV8enginesbuttheseenginesstillhavethe24XcrankgearfoundontheGenIIIengines.Thecamshaftpositionsensorismovedtothefronttimingcoveronthesevehicles(justlikethenewer58Xengines)exceptthetiminggearhasa1XreluctorwithasingletoothresultinginthesamesignalpatternasthecamshaftmountedreluctorfoundontheGenIIIengines.

OntheGenIVV8Corvette,Trailblazer,SSR&otherS/Tplatformvehicles,thereisajumperharnessattached to the timing cover that connects the cam sensor to the engine harness (see image on page 9). OntheE40equipped2005-2006PontiacGTOandHoldenHSVvehiclestheengineharnessconnectsdirectlytothecamsensorandnosuchjumperharnessexistsontheengines.Becauseofthisdifferenceinfactorywiring,theconnectionfromtheTRG-001Atothefactoryharnessisdifferentbetweenthesetwo applications.

OnE40equippedvehiclestheincludedE40TRGcamshaftoutputadapterharness(L480145305)mustbeusedbetweentheTRG-001ACamOutandthevehicle’sengineharness.ThesuppliedcamshaftadapterharnesshasaconnectoralreadyinstalledononeendthatplugsintotheTRG-001ACamOutconnector.The“EngineHarnessCamE40”endhassealedterminalsthatneedtobeinstalledintotheappropriate connector for your vehicle application.• Two connectors are included with the extension harness. See the images and diagrams on page 7 to

determine the correct connector for your vehicle.• Forallvehiclesexceptthe2005-2006PontiacGTOandLS2HSVapplications,the12129615

connectorwillbeinstalledonthecamshaftoutputadapterharness.• Forthe2005-2006PontiacGTOandLS2HSVapplications,the12131195connectorwillbe

installed on the camshaft output adapter harness.• Thefollowingpin-outshouldbeusedwhenterminatingeitherconnector(forbothsetsofvehicle

• Theterminalswillonlygointheconnectorsonewayandshouldbeabletobeinsertedandlockedinto position without any undue force. The letter markings for the pins are molded into each connector.

• Onceyouhaveinstalledthewiresintotheconnector,gentlypullonthewirestomakesuretheyareproperly seated and locked in the connector.

• Nowinstalltheterminalpositionassurance(TPA)componentovertheconnectorandwires(seeother TRG-001A harness connectors to see how this is done).
