The Pactolus Group is underlain by Hoesland vol-
CRnlCS. The general strike of the formations Is northwester-
ly wlth dips of 40 to 90" southwest. A cross section of the
rocks Is 8XpOSed along Gold Greek. horth of the shingle
mill there 1s a ohlorite hornblende greenstone schist derived
from an andesitic tuff. at the mill a 250 foot width of
fresh felspar porphyry (andeslte, greenstone). Proaeedlng
southwest this is followed by 1500 feet of fresh andesltlc
greenatone, and 1800 feet of alternating andesltic and bas-
nltia rocks, sometimes massive and sometimes SChiSted or
sheared parallel to the general trend of the formations.
In this 1800* width there tire bands of pyrite
mlneralizatlon. The pyrite occurs in three principal types
of rock. The first Is in a light bleached aLtered sahlst;
the second In harder siliclfled brownish and purplish alter-
ed schist; the third In a more massive basaltic rock show-
ing epldote and having a nodular weathered surfaoe. The
mlnerallzod bands parallel the formations.
In 1887 good gold values wars obtained from
the gossan of one of the pyrltized belts. ii small mill
was installed but was unable to treat the sulphldes.
Values were much lOW8r In the unoxidized ore.

To the southwest of the Pactolus there is e.
rock resembling a diorite or diorlte porphyry. In places
this is sohisted similar to the rocks of the Hossland
k3taries. This may be either a member of the series or e
later intrusive.
