    Your Learner Assessment Record

    Your learner assessment record is designed to support the assessment of your CYQ Level 2Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-Based Exercise). It contains all the paperwork that you,your tutor and your assessor need to complete the for gym-based units.

    You will share the learner assessment record with your tutor and assessor, who will use thepaperwork contained within it to assess you throughout the duration of your training. Thisdocument is an essential part of your assessment and should be kept safely. Your tutor andassessor will guide you as to which forms you need at a particular time, and how they should

    be used and completed.

    Upon successful completion of the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym-BasedExercise) you will gain a certificate and be able to enter the health and fitness industry as a fullyqualified gym instructor.     UK Level 2 Gym Instructor Occupational Descriptor

    Occupational Description

    A fitness instructors role includes planning, instructing and evaluating gym-based instructionsand ongoing client/member programmes. They should also assist more qualified instructorsin the delivery of personal training programmes. A fitness instructor should also activelyencourage potential clients/members to join and adhere to regular exercise programmes,employing appropriate motivational strategies to achieve this.

    Occupational Roles

    The fitness instructor should be involved in:

    1. Collecting and checking information relating to individual clients

    2. Analysing information relating to individual clients

    3. Identifying and agreeing basic short, medium and long term goals

    4. Planning, instructing and evaluating safe and appropriate gym-based exercise sessions

    5. Providing one-to-one or group inductions and general exercise programmes, includingintroduction to new equipment where appropriate

    6. Selecting relevant exercises and designing appropriate programmes which address safetyat all times

    7. Producing suitable programme cards for a range of clients/members

    8. Suggesting relevant adaptations to allow for individual client differences or needs

    9. Using logical and progressive teaching methodologies to introduce a range of exercises inrelation to clients goals

    10. Selecting and/or correctly demonstrating a variety of cardiovascular and resistance trainingmethods that can be used by clients/members

    11. Providing clients/members with general advice on how to progress their individualprogrammes

    12. Observing clients/members at all times in order to correct unsafe technique where required

    13. Positively interacting and motivating clients/members using appropriate strategies topromote retention and adherence to exercise

    14. Acting as a positive role model at all times for all clients/members and staff

    15. Proactively developing and maintaining high standards of customer care to facilitate theretention of clients/members

    16. Promoting healthy activities and related strategies for daily living to clients/members

    17. Monitoring maintenance schedules and assisting in the upkeep and cleanliness of theenvironment and all associated gym equipment

    18. Working within the parameters given at Level 2, recognising the standards and professionallimitations that this provides, referring to appropriate members of staff for guidance andsupport

    Occupational Competence

    Level 2 Gym Instructors should:

    1. Be aware of their professional role boundaries as listed

    2. When necessary, and within the limits of their knowledge and competence, adapt a generalsession to accommodate the needs of special population clients*

    3. Give guidance to encourage special population clients* to follow the key safety guidelinesand discourage them from anything deemed to be potentially hazardous/contraindicated toenable them to take part in sessions

    *Special population clients including:

    1416 year old young people

    Disabled peopleOlder people (50+)

    Ante and postnatal women

    4. Get advice from another appropriate professional if there are any objectives, physicalactivities or risks that fall outside their professional boundaries or that they do not feelcompetent to deal with and/or refer on to the appropriate person

    Level 2 Fitness Instructors should not:

    1. Instructors who do not posses the appropriate special population qualification(s) (in olderadults, ante/postnatal women and disabled people) are NOT qualified to:

    Be a specialist instructor in the area of special populations, or advertise as such

    Instruct special population clients 1:2 or in groups on a regular or progressive basis

    Your assessment has four elements:

    Assessment element 1 - continuous assessment element

    You will be assessed demonstrating:

    Two free weight (FW) exercises

    Two resistance machines (RM)Three body weight (BW) exercises

    One cardiovascular (CV) machine

    Safe lifting and passing of weights and spotting

    All the exercises and machines you need to know are listed on the Table of DesignatedExercises and List of CV Machines on page 24 of this pack.

It is likely that Assessment Elements 2, 3 and 4 will be assessed on the same day,although this will depend on your course and learning provider.     o provide a safe and effective GYM training session for the duration of 60 minutes. The session will include aWarm-Up, Cardio Vascular workout, Resistance Training, Stretching and a Cool Down.

    I will begin with some Mobility movements to prepare for the workout then I will use 3 different Cardio VascularMachines the Stationary Bike for the Warm-up, the Treadmill for the Cardio Vascular workout and then Cross-Trainer for the Cool Down. The Resistance Training will be a combination of 4 Free Weights and 4 ResistanceMachine encompassing a whole body approach. To finalise the workout we will perform 5 Maintenance and 2Developmental Stretches.

    The Client has no specific needs or injuries he has been off from training for a week so a whole body approach will help get him

    started to tackle the rest of the weeks workouts.
