26 February to 29 March 2018 L1.1 AIDS TO NAVIGATION MANAGER TRAINING CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business, V & A Waterfront THE EVENT Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) will run a course for potential Level 1 Aids to Navigation (AtoN) Managers in Cape Town, South Africa from 26 February to 29 March 2018. Participants who complete the course and its written tests of competency will be awarded a Level 1 Certificate for Aids to Navigation Managers by TNPA and IALA. This principally theoretical course covers the complete syllabus for Level 1 AtoN Managers set out in IALA Recommendation E – 141. Visits and practical exercises are included to consolidate theoretical competencies gained. Previous sea experience is an advantage but not a mandatory requirement as general nautical knowledge is included in Module 2. Module 2 will be streamed to permit a common standard of basic nautical knowledge to be acquired before the start of Module 3. During the course, participants will also attend a week- long Risk Management Seminar jointly hosted by TNPA and IALA. OBJECTIVE The course aims to enable participants to gain an internationally recognised Aids to Navigation Certificate as a basic AtoN Manager. The competencies to be gained include: Module 1: Introduction to the marine environment and marine Aids to Navigation Module 2: Technical functions of visual; radio and audible AtoN; Vessel Traffic Services Module 3A: AtoN Provision, design and management Module 3B: Maintenance; contracts; environmental matters and human resource issues The full syllabus and levels of competence can be found in IALA Model Course L1.1 – Marine Aids to Navigation – Manager Training, which is available free of charge on the IALA website. COURSE DELIVERY The course will be delivered by the Secretary-General and the Programme Manager of IALA World-Wide Academy and TNPA-endorsed experts. Adequate time will be available for revision and tutorials. ATTENDANCE The course is targeted at those who will fulfil the role of Aids to Navigation Managers in the Competent Authorities of Coastal States or their Aids to Navigation service providers. The working language will be English. There is a limit of 16 participants, and 12 places will be reserved for international participants. Participants should provide their own laptop. All other course materials will be supplied. FEE STRUCTURE: INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS All participants will be responsible for funding their own return international airfares and visa application fees. TNPA will undertake all cost of training, accommodation and transportation in Cape Town. Please note that there will be free days on which no tuition takes place. Participants should therefore make provision for funding should they wish to engage in other/tourist activities during this time. Invitation letters will be supplied if required. The deadline for initial application is 5 February 2018. VENUE The course will be held at the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, situated in the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa.
