We Are Not Forgotten

Whilst serving in Northern Ireland with theRoyal Military Police in 1994, CarolineBeazley suffered gunshot wounds to herhand, back and face. She also took a shot toher head; fortunately her helmet saved herlife. Following her medical discharge Carolinedid not attend social events until she wasnominated to attend the NFA Garden Partyin 2016.

Karl Tearney joined the Army in 1963 aged 16and served tours in Northern Ireland, Bosnia,Iraq and Afghanistan as a helicopter pilot. Afterbeing diagnosed with PTSD he was put in touchwith the NFA by our Medical Officer Dr KateGoble before being medically discharged in 2015.

Karl has since taken part in a broad range of ourevents, including our battlefield tour to Malta,Founder’s Day at the Royal Hospital Chelsea andskiing holidays in France and Colorado.

“As a sufferer of Post Traumatic StressDisorder and depression it can oftenfeel like a lonely world and my timespent with you has really made adifference. There was such a greatunderstanding of my need. Not onlydid it help me mentally but spirituallytoo as it’s so inspiring to be amongstothers who are also suffering. I findthat I am able to relax and feel likemyself again with others whounderstand me. I have been extremelylucky to have been looked after by theNFA who are my new family andwhere I belong. I am proud oncemore. Although my gratitude couldnever be measured - as the scaledoesn’t exist - I can say that, in myview, a smile is worth at least a millionpounds and I left Colorado as abillionaire.”

“I know I was injured a long time agoand there are those who think that Ishould be over it by now, but eversince I have left the Army, I have feltlike no-one ever quite understood.Like many other injured servicemenand women my very promising careerwas cut short, I couldn’t do the job Ihad trained to do and felt like I hadbeen thrown on the scrap heap. I feltforgotten about and that hurt.

For me meeting other injuredservicemen and women was themoment when the switch was flicked,the light in my head came back on.The Association made me feelincluded in the military family again,welcomed me into this family thatunderstood how I felt, who got it. I wasno longer forgotten, I belonged againto a new, wonderful, caringcompassionate family.”

Some of the many we have helped

Fred Hill flew 87 operational sorties inHampden and Mosquito aircraft with BomberCommand in WWII. He also trained pilotsand flight crews on a variety of aircraft beforejoining Transport Command in the MiddleEast. In total he accrued over 1,900 hoursflying time during the war, receiving theDistinguished Flying Cross and two Mentionsin Despatches.

After being demobbed Fred went intoteaching, becoming a grammar schoolheadmaster.

It wasn’t until 2015 that the NFA becameaware of Fred when he attended the GardenParty at Buckingham Palace as part of theBomber Command group; he has sinceattended a Christmas lunch near his home inExeter and the Christmas Tea Party at St.James’s Palace.

John Brown served as a trooper in the SAS,seeing action in Malaya, the Oman and Aden.He came to the attention of the NFA in 2008following the death in Iraq of his son Nick,who was also serving with the SAS. His son’sdeath, and the circumstances surrounding it,had taken a huge emotional toll on John andthe rest of his family.

John attended one of our lunches with fairlylow expectations:

Since that first lunch, John has been invitedto several NFA outings, Royal Parties andholidays, often bringing former colleaguesalong for their first taste of one of our events.He now acts as an unofficial NFAco-ordinator for beneficiaries in the Herefordarea, helping others to benefit from oursupport.

“My mind was doing all sorts. It didn’tlook like it from the outside, but insideit was whirling around. I couldn’tsleep, I was all over the shop.”

“I thought it would be just a meal anda drink, but it wasn’t. I met up with allthese old boys and young lads whohad been through some horrendousthings. It didn’t take any of the painaway, but it levelled it off. The biggestfactor in putting me back togetherwas this association.”

Addressing The Need

More than half the UK’s 2.8 million ex-servicemen and women have a long-term illness ordisability, nearly 75,000 service personnel areinjured or sick as a result of serving in Iraq andAfghanistan and 22,000 have been medicallydischarged since 2001. (Figures from theDirectory of Social Change’s UK Armed ForcesCharities 2014 report.)

Due to their injuries, health problems andother social issues many service men andwomen suffer from loneliness andisolation, with further adverse effects ontheir physical and mental health. Manyveterans miss the camaraderie and banter ofservice life and do not feel valued orappreciated for the sacrifices they have made.Younger injured men and women recoveringfrom more recent injuries often lack themotivation and self-confidence they once had.These problems not only affect the service menor women themselves, but also their partners,families, friends and local communities.

In order to identify those in greatest need andtherefore those most likely to benefit from ourevents, we work closely with regimental andmilitary associations, veterans’ organisations,Personnel Recovery Centres/Units, RehabTroops RM and other service charities.Considerable effort is made to ensure we donot duplicate the work of other serviceorganisations, but rather that we complementtheir work as well as the recovery pathway ofthe individual.

Activities are carefully tailored to theindividual needs of beneficiaries ofdifferent ages, service experiences,personal circumstances and degree ofphysical or mental injury or disability. Weaim to offer appropriate support both tothose who are in permanent need andthose whose needs change over time.

We support any serving man or woman whois wounded, injured or sick and any veteran,of any age, with a disability, illness orinfirmity; whatever the cause and whenever itarose. Any serving or former member of theRegular or Reserve forces of The Royal Navy, TheRoyal Marines, The British Army, The Royal AirForce and The Merchant Navy may be eligible forour help.

The unique aspect of our work is the way wemix serving personnel with veterans of allages, from WWII to Afghanistan; like-mindedpeople with shared experiences, but from differentbackgrounds, services and regiments. Our oldestveteran is 105 years old, our youngest servingbeneficiary is just 19.

Our aim is to bring hope, happiness and friendshipto these men and women, and our motto ‘FromComradeship To Challenge’ illustrates thevariety and breadth of the support we offer.Every year some 10,000 men and women benefitfrom our unique and full programme of events andactivities, each of which is intended to restoreconfidence, enhance wellbeing, boost morale andimprove the chances of the individual and theirfamily enjoying a normal, if not better, life.

In order to identify those who are in greatest needwe work closely with regimental and militaryassociations, personnel recovery centres, veterans’organisations and other service charities. We askthem to nominate their members or service usersfor our activities based on those who are likely tobenefit the most.

Enriching the wellbeing of our beneficiariesis at the heart of our work and we do knowthat the difference we make can be life changing,bringing about a more positive outlook and helpingindividuals in many aspects of their lives. Often,simply having something to look forward to and areminder that they have not been forgotten, canprovide a tremendous boost to an individual’sspirits and general health.

One of the most rewarding aspects of being partof The Not Forgotten Association is reading themany emails and letters we receive from thosewho attend our events and activities. These donot just thank our staff for their work and thecare they show to each beneficiary, they alsohighlight the difference our activities make tothe lives of so many serving and ex-service menand women whose lives have been affected byinjury or disability.

This Review sets out to illustrate the impact and theimportance of our work. All our activities are designed

to provide enjoyment, but more importantly they also restore confidence and fostercomradeship. These are so often what are missed most by those who have suffered injury or whoare coping with disability. The variety of our events described in this Review reflects the agerange of our beneficiaries, the youngest of whom is 19 and the oldest 105.

None of our work would be possible without the continuing support and generosity of ourdonors and we owe them all huge and heartfelt thanks. The list of donors on pages 28-29 doesnot adequately reflect their interest in our work or the many ways in which individuals andorganisations support us. The thanks we receive are as much to them as they are to us.

The Association enjoys the unique privilege of being permitted to hold each year a summerGarden Party in the grounds of Buckingham Palace and a Christmas Tea Party at St. James'sPalace; events which we are proud to deliver on behalf of the entire Armed Services community.We were honoured by the presence of HRH The Duke of York and his daughters TRH ThePrincesses Beatrice and Eugenie at the Garden Party and delighted that our Patron HRH ThePrincess Royal, accompanied by her husband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, attended ourChristmas Party. Such support means a great deal to our charity and to our beneficiaries.

At our AGM we said farewell to a long-serving and very active trustee, Major Derek Smyth.Derek joined the Committee in 2001 and served as our Honorary Treasurer for many years. Hewas awarded the Order of Mercy medal in 2016 for his voluntary service to charities and non-profitorganisations and I am delighted that on his retirement Derek became a Vice President.

The Not Forgotten Association prides itself on providing a wide range of activities to some10,000 individuals each year with a small and dedicated team. I pay tribute to our team for allthey achieved during another extremely busy 12 months.

The words of those we serve are a much greater testimony to our work than anything that canbe said by me. I hope that you enjoy reading some of what they have said in this Review.

A Royal treat at Buckingham Palace

Our annual Garden Party was held on May 26th atBuckingham Palace. It was attended by more than1,900 beneficiaries, carers, escorts and supporters. Itis a unique and huge privilege, granted byHer Majesty The Queen, for us to hold this flagshipevent which we are proud to deliver on behalf of allthe Armed Services and the wider service community.

The event was attended by HRH The Duke of York andhis daughters, TRH Princess Beatrice of York andPrincess Eugenie of York. They were accompanied bycelebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainmentand music from The Band of The Queen’s Division.

We would like to thank everyone who helped to makethe Garden Party such a huge success, particularly theBuckingham Palace staff, the many service helpers andour volunteers.

The Christmas Party

On December 8th, by kind permission of HerMajesty The Queen, we held our annualChristmas Tea Party for some 280 guests of allages in the magnificent State Apartments ofSt. James’s Palace. We are hugely grateful forthis special privilege.

Our Patron HRH The Princess Royal and herhusband Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence wereboth in attendance. They made their ways aroundthe Throne, Entrée and Queen Anne Rooms,speaking to all our beneficiaries, whilst ourbeneficiaries enjoyed afternoon tea andentertainment from singers, magicians,caricaturists, balloonists, silhouettists, celebritiesand a quintet from the Band of The GrenadierGuards.

After our Royal guests departed, everyonemoved to the adjoining Picture Gallery for theafternoon’s finale; a highly entertaining and variedshow featuring top class comedy, music and song,all headlined by The Jerseys.

The Christmas Party always brings a great dealof pleasure, joy and cheer to our guests. Meetingother service men and women in such a gloriouslocation and happy atmosphere fosters friendshipand camaraderie, creates lasting memories andstrengthens pride in individual and sharedachievements. The afternoon was a resoundingsuccess and we would like to thank the Palacestaff, the service helpers, entertainers, celebritiesand our volunteers for their valuablecontributions.

For men and women who are proud to haveserved their country attending such an occasionand being introduced to a member of the RoyalFamily who takes an obvious interest in themindividually, gives them a strong sense of beingvalued and a real boost. It is a huge honour andusually a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity whichthey will never forget.

Entertainment: Concerts & Televisions

This year we arranged 76 concerts throughoutEngland and Scotland entertaining some 3,855people, the vast majority of who are residentsof ex-service care homes.

Research shows that music can have a powerfultherapeutic effect on those living in care, particularlyon older people with dementia. Our concerts in thehomes are a highlight in their calendars and give amuch needed morale boost to the elderly residents,many of whom are frail or live with dementia, theirfamily members and the staff. These afternoons bringfun, joy and laughter to veterans who are unable toget out and about.

It is always very moving to see the elderly residentsjoining in the singing, clapping hands, tapping theirfeet and even dancing as smiles light up their facesand they remember songs from happier times.

We are hugely grateful to all the performers for theirdedication, enthusiasm and ability to connect withoften very frail and poorly people.

Putting smiles on people’s faces

We also support those veterans who arehousebound or have very restricted mobilityand are therefore unable to attend our eventsand activities through the provision of atelevision and/or a TV licence.

This year we provided 414 televisions and 418licences to ex-service men and women of allages, many of who are living in very challengingcircumstances. Television is often the majorsource of entertainment for veterans who arehousebound and their main link with theoutside world.

Applications for such support are submittedmainly by caseworkers from SSAFA andThe Royal British Legion and we are gratefulto them for their ongoing co-operation.

We have also provided 43 televisions and TVlicences to a range of ex-service care homes,hospitals, hostels, housing projects andrehabilitation centres. Some of these are forthe use of individuals, whilst others are locatedin communal areas enabling many more peopleto benefit from our support.

Our holiday programme continues toevolve as we seek to deliver a wide rangeof opportunities for comradeship andchallenge. This year we organised carpfishing breaks, a trekking challenges inIceland and Scotland, and a countryactivities week in Scotland - all for thefirst time. In total we arranged 20 groupholidays and short breaks for 567 injuredbeneficiaries and escorts.

Carp fishing weekends in the south west ofEngland in April and October enabled smallgroups of beneficiaries to enjoy totally relaxing

breaks and forget the challenges of their injuriesfor a few days. The beautiful surroundingsproved particularly therapeutic for those withmental health injuries and everyone becamegreat friends.

Our short breaks at the Union Jack Clubbefore and after our Royal Parties allow us toinvite mainly younger beneficiaries to enjoy amuch needed couple of days with theirpartners. These are hugely successful occasionswhich help some 200 guests to realise that theyare not alone in their struggles. They all returnhome with their spirits lifted and many newlasting friendships are made.

Boosting morale and improving self-confidence

Once again we took three groups of youngerbeneficiaries for week-long stays at a charmingprivate farmhouse in Majorca. Two groupsenjoyed R&R holidays with their partners,taking part in activities such as go-karting, horseriding, kayaking, jet skiing, painting and walking.These breaks offer respite from the routine ofrehabilitation for both the injured and theirpartner; problems and experiences are shared,lasting friendships are made and feelings ofisolation reduced. The third group, whichincluded a double amputee, took on a ThreePeaks Challenge in the local mountains,showing great determination, grit andwonderful team spirit.

The Three Peaks Challenge in Majorca

relaxation and the opportunity to make newfriends for our 45 guests. For one couple it wasthe first time they had been away together formany years due to his illness, and the wife of ablind veteran saw her husband laughing andsmiling for the first time in a long while.

Funded by Help For Heroes, the Great GlenWay walk in Scotland challenged our group of22 veterans with a wide range of ages, injuriesand abilities, to cover 73 miles in four days.Through quiet determination, mutual support,camaraderie and friendship they all completedthe distance achieving their own personal goals.

Our battlefield tour to Normandy in October,which was also supported by Help for Heroes,provided some poignant and memorablemoments. Amongst the group of 26 were threeWWII veterans - including one who wasreturning to Sword Beach for the first time sincelanding there on D-Day - who each related theirwartime experiences. Another Royal Navyveteran was able to place a letter from hismother at her brother’s grave, enabling her topay her final respects after 72 years.

Our highly popular annual event at BrandsHatch saw 77 guests enjoy a memorable dayof thrills and excitement being driven atbreathtaking speeds around the famous trackin a wide variety of high performance road andracing cars. Overnight accommodation withdinner in the trackside hotel enabled ourbeneficiaries to swap stories of the day, makenew friends and relive the comradeship ofservice life.

In early 2017, thanks to the great generosity ofone of our individual donors, we organisedthree hugely successful skiing holidays, oneto La Plagne in the French Alps and two toBreckenridge in Colorado. The groups includeda number of amputees who participated inskiing, snowboarding, sit-skiing and ski-bikingand all made great progress during the week.Breckenridge in particular, with its quiet slopesand the superb instructors – some US veteransthemselves – make these trips incrediblyvaluable and rewarding. For a few days ourguests were free from the stresses andproblems of their rehabilitation and able tofocus on what they can achieve rather than whatthey cannot. Learning to ski, or any other newskill, restores confidence and provides a senseof achievement which broadens horizons andencourages participation in a wider range ofactivities.

“I managed to go through so many barrierswhich not only gave me confidence buttherapy to boot. The time I had meetingother veterans was also a great boost. Thetime in Breckenridge meant I could put somany demons to rest plus it made me feelhuman again and has given me a sense ofpurpose in life.”

Outings & Lunches

We increased the number of outings andlunches this year, arranging 39 separateactivities for 2,290 men and women of allages. These tried and tested days out aredesigned to lift the spirits and to give ourguests the opportunity to socialise withlike-minded people for a few hours, tomeet old friends and make newacquaintances.

Sport provides much-needed fun andexcitement for service men and women,particularly those on the recovery pathway.Thanks to the generosity of England Rugby,72 beneficiaries saw the England AutumnInternationals and Six Nations home matches atTwickenham.

Our longstanding relationship with AscotRacecourse enabled 40 guests, from WWIIveterans to injured serving personnel, to enjoya day’s racing in a private box with fullhospitality. For one young injured Marine thiswas the first outing since sustaining his injuriesand proved to be a highly beneficial step on hisroad to recovery.

Once again we were able to invite more than160 beneficiaries to attend the WimbledonTennis Championships. With some of thebest seats in the house on the two main showcourts and a delicious afternoon tea, our guestsenjoyed a truly memorable experience and wethank the All England Lawn Tennis andCroquet Club for their continued generosity.

For many veterans of all ages ceremonial andmilitary themed events play a very special roleand are a great privilege to attend. Again thisyear we arranged for groups to attendFounder’s Day at the Royal Hospital Chelsea,Trooping The Colour - Colonel’s Review,the Dunkirk Little Ships Veterans Cruiseand the Festival of Remembrance at TheRoyal Albert Hall. We were also delighted tohave been involved in the Royal HospitalChelsea’s Summer BBQ for some 400Pensioners and guests.

Comradeship across the ages

Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaphprovided a perfect example of the way in whichwe bring service men and women of all agestogether, with three generations of one family- including a 93-year-old Chindit veteranattending the event for the first time -represented in our 37 strong marchingcontingent.

Our annual journey on the Bluebell Railwayprovided a nostalgic experience for 50 olderveterans and carers, whilst 107 guests enjoyeda trip on The Solent: a particularly memorableday for one WWII veteran as it was the firsttime he had been on a boat since launching fromSouthampton during the D-Day Landings in1944. Another regular favourite - our visit toHighgrove - enabled 25 beneficiaries to takea guided tour of the private gardens of the TRHThe Prince of Wales and The Duchess ofCornwall.

Our Christmas lunches continue to providemuch-needed companionship at what is adifficult time of year for those who are isolatedas a result of their age, injuries or disability. Thisyear we hosted 843 people at eight venuesaround the UK. We would like to thank theSwingtime Sweethearts for providing thefabulous entertainment and JTI for theircontinued generosity in supporting these hugelybeneficial and successful events.

We were honoured to be able to invite 62guests to the star-studded tribute concert toDame Vera Lynn celebrating her 100th

birthday. Dame Vera has been a great supporterof the Association for very many years and wehonoured to have been part of the occasion. “Your activities have a tremendous

impact on individuals in restoringconfidence, boosting morale and givingthem the opportunity to meet otherpeople in similar circumstances who maynot be able to get out as much owing totheir mobility or poor health.”

This year our Trustees set down a plan which reaffirmed our support to eligible servicebeneficiaries to provide entertainment and recreational opportunities to all we can reach. Theplan sets out our commitment to review how we do this in an increasingly complex militarycharity environment, looking at our current income sources and identifying how these can bedeveloped.

With the charity’s centenary in three years we have our sights firmly set on moving beyond thismilestone whilst reaching more beneficiaries and ensuring that no-one is forgotten.

To act generally for the benefit of service and ex-service personnel with disabilities or who arewounded, including the organisation or provision of items or facilities for leisure and recreationalactivities, travel, holidays and outings.

Our Mission:To deliver high quality and safe recreational and entertainment activities to meet the needs ofour beneficiaries, and to provide a caring and personal service which is fully linked in with otherrecovery pathways and which is underpinned by an ethos where everyone counts and is valued.

Our Vision:To be the trusted partner of choice for providing entertainment and recreation opportunities forboth beneficiaries and other service charities. To position ourselves to help more individuals whowe are not yet reaching. To meet the high demand for activities and events, well supported byvolunteers and with a strong financial base.

INCOME EXPENDITURE

Reserves PolicyOur General Committee has set the policy which requires reserves to be maintained at a levelwhich ensures that our core activity could continue during an 18 month period of unforeseendifficulty where income was significantly reduced.

The reserves will be kept in two distinct funds as follows:

● Designated Investment Restricted Fund. Initially maintained at approximately £2.2M, investedto generate 7% of current charity expenditure, growing to generate 10% of expenditure.

● Core Operating Cash Reserve. £150K initially to create an operating cash reserve to managecash flow, maintain financial flexibility and to cover ongoing operating and programme costs.

The calculation of the required level of reserves is an integral part of the organisation's planning,budget and forecast cycle.  It takes into account:

● Risks associated with each stream of income and expenditure differing from that budgeted.● The organisation’s commitments.● Planned activity level.

Our total income for the year was £948K, a decrease of £146K over last year yet slightly aheadof budget.

Expenditure decreased from £1,369K to £1,204K. Of this outlay, 86% related to charitableexpenditure, 14% to governance and fundraising. These percentages were the same as in the prioryear.

The appointment of a new Chief Executive and a new Head of Finance led to a review of ourincome streams and a restructuring of the executive team. This has significantly strengthened oursupport to the Trustees, overseeing governance, securing our financial base and, most importantly,safeguarding the delivery of events to our beneficiaries.

New Trustee & Honorary Treasurer Paul BotterillEducated at the Britannia Royal Naval College, Paul served in the RoyalNavy from 1963-71 reaching the rank of Lieutenant and qualifying as aDiving Officer. He subsequently worked as an Account Manager for IBMand Marketing Director EMEA for Trans Ocean Leasing before foundingand leading Intermodal Equipment Associates, a marine container lessor,until it was sold and merged with Leasing Partners Inc. Paul then becameChairman and CEO of the Puffa group, expanding and selling the business.

He has since held various consultancy roles related to mergers, acquisitions and corporaterecoveries for SMEs and whilst acting as interim group CEO for Kier Baker Holdings herestructured the company and returned it to profit.

Paul remains Executive Chairman of Wind Container Services, a container consultancy andmanagement service company which he co-founded, and President and CEO of SeaborneIntermodal Holdings.

Married with three adult children and six grandchildren, Paul is very active in the voluntary sectorfor a local church, school and yacht club; he is also a Director of the Army & Navy Club. His otherinterests include sailing, country pursuits and running a small equestrian property.

We do not receive any guaranteed or statutory income and we therefore rely on the generosityof those who recognise the value of our work, both for their financial support and for the timeand services that they freely give to us.

The charity sector as a whole continues to face funding challenges, not least being the difficulteconomic climate. For military charities this is compounded by the risk associated with waningpublic interest following the withdrawal of the UK’s Forces from Afghanistan.

To try to counteract this and to maximise the opportunities for income from fundraising activitiesand grant giving organisations, both military and civilian, we have taken on an additional staffmember who will dedicate part of their time to fundraising and restructured the role of anotherto lead an enhanced programme of grant applications.

As one of some 2,500 charities which support the service community we play a small, but importantand unique role. This is recognised by the main service charities and others, who refer theirmembers and service users to us as their partner of choice for providing entertainment and leisureopportunities.

Many of these partners also provide us with hugely valuable funding to enable us to carry out thiswork and this year we received contributions from: ABF The Soldiers’ Charity (£60,000), QueenMary’s Roehampton Tust (£22,000), The Royal British Legion (£19,492), The Royal Air ForceBenevolent Fund (£15,000), Trinity House (£12,000), The Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charityand Greenwich Hospital (£10,000), Help for Heroes (£10,000*), The Royal Naval BenevolentTrust (£10,000**), Seafarers UK (£7,500) and The Forces Trust (£5,000). Several of theseincreased their contribution over the previous year, others supported us for the first time.

Other grant-giving trust and organisations who again made significant donations included: theWestminster Foundation (£24,649), Childwick Trust (£15,000) Peacock Charitable Trust(£10,000), Elizabeth Frankland Moore & Star Foundation (£10,000) and Charles Skye CharitableTrust (£7,500).

We continued to receive much-needed funds from our extremely loyal small group of corporatesupporters including Aspen Insurance (£30,000) and Atlas Elektronik (£10,000). The Lark InsuranceBroking Group again encouraged their employees to undertake a range of fundraising activitiessuch as golf events, cycle challenges and duathlons, and then matched the money raised.

Our loyal team of volunteers of all ages, including WWII veterans, have again given up their timeto collect money at railway stations, supermarkets, shopping centres, sports venues, airports andmilitary shows. Other individual fundraising events included marathons, variety shows, barn dances,triathlons, concerts, bike rides and endurance challenges.

A list of our principal donors and fundraisers for the year is shown on pages 28-29.

To every single person who has supported us this year, in whatever way, we would like to expressour deepest heartfelt thanks. Your financial contributions are vital, your stories and endeavourshugely encouraging. You’ve helped us to support nearly 10,000 individuals this year.

Northern Ireland Chairman’s Report

2016 was another busy year for our Associationin Northern Ireland as we continued to supportthe serving wounded, injured or sick andex-service men and women.

Again we were represented at a number ofimportant events, including RemembranceSunday at the Cenotaph, Belfast and the Gardenof Remembrance. We hosted activities such asroadshows and lunches and enabled residentsof the Somme Nursing Home to attend lunchoutings, concerts, pantomimes and the RoyalBritish Legion Belfast Festival of Remembrance.We arranged for injured service men andwomen to take part in skiing trips to France andColorado, holidays in Majorca, a battlefield tourto Normandy and to attend the Association’sGarden Party at Buckingham Palace andChristmas Party at St. James’s Palace.

Our work would not be possible without thecommitment and enthusiasm of our small teamof volunteers. I would also like to place onrecord the continuing support we receive fromother military charities and old comradeassociations, particularly the Disabled Ex-Service Association. We continue to play anactive role in the Northern Ireland VeteransForum.

Our History

Our founder, Miss Marta Cunningham CBE, wasborn in New Orleans in the United States.Following her emigration to Europe, she madeher debut appearance as a soprano soloist in theCoronation Concert for Edward VII at theCrystal Palace in 1901. This was followed byperformances in oratorio and tours of England,Ireland and America. In 1910 she establishedregular ‘matinees musicales’ at Claridge’s Hotelin London, and during WWI she was active incharity work.

History relates that, a year after the Armistice,Marta heard that there were perhaps a handfulof wounded soldiers under treatment at anearby Ministry of Pensions Hospital. She calledon the Matron and asked if she had a few lonelypatients who would like to come our for tea.The Matron looked surprised and replied thatshe had a few hundred patients - 600 to beprecise.

Marta was deeply moved by what she saw at thehospital:

“Listless men who took no notice of my comingor of my going. Were these really the enthusiasticyoung men who went to a nation’s rescue?”

She soon set about mobilising her group offriends to host these men for afternoon tea andentertainment. During one of these earlyinvitations one soldier was heard to say:

“We don’t want no charity, Miss - we areforgotten by everybody and we’d better stop so.”

On 12th August 1920 the “Not Forgotten”Association was formed for the ‘comfort, cheerand entertainment’ of servicemen injured inWWI, and in its first year some 10,000 menwere entertained. Thanks to the generosity ofother charities and the public, as well as the firmbacking of the Royal Family, hospital visits andtea concerts were followed by outings, drivesand gifts such as fruit, chocolate and cigarettes.

Although its aims have remained largely thesame throughout its 96 years, the Associationhas adapted to meet the changing needs of theserving wounded and veterans with disabilities.WWII brought a huge increase in the numberof disabled service men and women and arenewed need for the charity’s work. A newgeneration of the injured and sick were thereto be helped alongside the ‘Boys of the OldBrigade’ who needed care as never before.

In the 1960s the number of veterans eligible forthe Charity’s assistance dwindled. However,with the deployment of our Armed Forces inNorthern Ireland, the Falklands, the Balkans,Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, the need forour work grows no less.

Despite the loss of records in an air raid in 1941,we can be reasonably confident that about onemillion men and women have benefited from thecharity’s activities since 1920. Whilst the needfor its work remains, the Association willcontinue to ensure that those who have servedtheir country and are suffering shall not beforgotten.

Chief Executive, Brigadier James Stopford CBEJames left the Army in December 2015 after 36 years with the Irish Guards. He is a member of HM BodyGuard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms, Chairman of the Gallipoli Association, an enthusiasticbut untalented sailor and lover of all outdoor activities. Married to Michelle, a solicitor, they have twogrown-up children, a doctor and a vintner.

Head of Events, Rosie ThompsonRosie has been our Head of Events for 19 years and never fails to be inspired by the many thousands ofveterans she has met. Rosie loves any outdoor activity and when not working - which is rare - she is busyraising money for the NFA. She has completed dozens of running challenges, half and full marathons, includingthe Marathon des Sables - the ‘Toughest Footrace on Earth’.

Head of Finance, Al B-GonçalvesAl brings a wealth of financial and accounting experience gained in South Africa, the USA and the UK. Al ranhis own accounting practice in Cape Town specialising in small businesses and was a co-founder of the SouthAfrican AIDS Foundation. Al is an active charity volunteer and currently serves as chair of the financecommittee of a Camden Town charity. His other interests include the theatre, ballet and visiting art galleries.

Assistant to Head of Events, Anne McGinleyAnne joined the NFA in 1999. She previously worked for the UN in Geneva, New York and Damascusbefore returning to England as P.A. to the President of an international record company. Anne helps toorganise our busy programme of activities as well as representing the charity at events. She has a daughterand two stepchildren and enjoys walking, concerts, visiting museums and exhibitions.

Office Administrator, Ann MilcoyAnn has been in post since 2001. After working for M&S, Shell, Price Waterhouse and United City Merchants,she left to bring up her two children, Peter and Eleanor before returning to work at the NFA. Her interestsare mainly her three grandchildren, but she also loves walking, dancing, learning Italian and holidaying in Italy.She especially enjoys meeting our beneficiaries and organising the collections at London railway stations.

Communications & Grants Officer, Phil JenkinsPhil joined the NFA in 2011 and has worked in most areas of the charity. After spending some 25 years incommercial roles in the travel industry, he became a freelance marketing consultant before joining the NFA.His responsibilities include the Annual Review, advertising, PR, grant applications and overseeing the websiteand social media. His passions include music and sport, especially his hometown football club Hereford FC.

IT & Database Manager, Nick Jones-EvansNick began his career as a youth project worker in Wales in 2010 before moving to London in 2012 to workas a support worker in a homeless hostel. As well as his technical and website responsibilities, Nick alsoruns our Television Department. He has qualifications in IT and computer game development and lives inNorth London with his partner, Sam.

Office Co-ordinator, Andy GallieHailing from Falmouth, Andy served in the Royal Navy from 1998 to 2011 spending 18 months on boardHMS Endurance. In this new role, Andy assists both the Finance and Events Teams and provides support toour wonderful fundraisers and volunteers. Andy is a huge rugby fan, supporting the Exeter Chiefs, and marriedhis partner Victoria on New Year’s Eve 2016.

Communications Co-ordinator, Milly GarnierMilly joined the NFA as a volunteer in August 2016 just after graduating from Bristol University. She provedso invaluable that we soon offered her a full-time role creating publicity material, developing our social mediaactivity and assisting our Events Team. The youngest of five sisters, Milly loves spending time with her familyand is a keen squash player.
