MO RE BU SES IN FUTU RE 'Seven years ago we ran one bus

hourly to Tia Juana', explained V.R. McClure, district sales representative, Pacific Greyhound, when he came here for an interview with the Alpine Sun following the bus story in Jast issue-, 'but today traffic demands a 12 minute schedule'.

Similar improvement can be obtained for Alpine when and if such service is required, with adequate stops along the route to S.D., he added.

Alpine, once a flag stop, is today a point on the schedule, McClure pointed out, and more buses will be put on as demand grows.

F.H. Whelan, industrial relations director, S.D. Transit System, with E.A. Reeder, sup erin t endent of transportation, also paid a visit to the Sun office. Whelan pointed out th at his firm, while a nxious to serve all its territory, is in no position to handle mountain traffi c,

at least not for many years until this area becomes densely populated'. They showed keen interest in the welfare of patrons and prospective ones.

The conclusion is that a bus line, or even a taxi service, must have sufficient business to m ake it profitable. Population along Hiway 80 is still too sparse. Likewise, serving Harbison Canyon's 175 families would be impractical.

'Through buses of course do not stop at every road' mentioned McClure ' but local cars will pick up and discharge passengers at an y point'. When more traffic shows the necessity, more coaches will be run, he said.

Present schedule is ample, with 8 west and 5 east dail y leaving Alpine.

To run an automobile round trip to S.D., the cost is 7¢ a mile or $4.20, while bus fare is 75¢ plus 11¢ US tax, the roundtrip $1.35 plus 22¢ tax.

As for a special bus to haul workers, it is believed that is impractical due to widely diverent destinations and ho urs, besides added cost of getting to and from the bus terminal in S .D.

B IG CHURC H CONCLAVE HERE The San Diego A s s o ci ation of

Congregational Churches and Ministers met Sunday afternoon and evening at Alpine Community Church. Over 300 representing the 22 churches in this county attended. A Pilgrim Fellowship panel discussion was held during the afternoon, at which Michael Kern and Manuel Maddox were Alpine delegates.

At the evening worship service conducted by Dr. R oger Lars on, Rev. Walter Smith, Mission Hills church, a former missionary to China, gave the sermon 'What Are You Doing'?

Refreshments were served in Fuller Hill during the supper hour. Mrs. Gordon Wilson, chairman.

SHOWER F OR PA PA PRATT! Last summer A rthur P. Pratt ,

Lazy A Ranch, invaded an engagement shower, mentioned 'nobody ever gave me a shower'. So Mrs. Pratt remembered it Thursday last on his 73'd birthday, gave him a bang up one at a surprise dinner, a baby shower as she says 'to observe his· second childhood'. Babyland was the decor. Dr. and Mrs. C.O. Tanner brought a bonnet and bib, which he had to wear! Mrs. Pratt turned up a unique gift, his picture in long dress at age 2, shop in Red Wing, Minn. Among many guests were Mr. and Mrs. John M. Jones, of Alpine. The Pratts leave the end of this month for a trip to Mexico City.

Enjoying the opening ni ght of 'Caine Mutiny Courtmartial' in S.D. were a number of Alpine drama lovers and members of the players: Elizabeth Ball, Bea La Force, Mr. & Mrs.Clarke Irvine and others.

Cecil and Beany (Bob Cl ampett), of TV fame, were attention-drawing visitors Sunday week at the L og Cabin where Cecil Starling, one of the owners, is an old friend.

After the check-up of a returned veeran, the doctor said, 'There's nothing zadically wrong with you. All you need is a little sun and air.

'Yeah, I know, ' replied the patient 'but my wife is dead s et agains t children.'

JIMMY S TO L Z HAS PA RTY A birthday party is a mighty big

event in the eyes of a J i ttle 5-year old youngster of the August Stolzs who recently moved to Alpine from San Mateo. Jimmy invited many of his little friends he met in kindergarten and they enjoyed an afternoon of · hunting peanuts, games and a few of the younger ones enjoyed dunking in the fish pond when no one was watching.
