On 10th August, 2016, the State

Government of Andhra Pradesh had

sanctioned a project for a period of five

years in the tribal pockets of Vizag,

Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East Godavari

& West Godavari Districts with an aim to

provide animal breeding and animal

health services at affordable rates to the

farmers. Through this project, farmers

will easily get Artificial Insemination

services with high-quality frozen semen

at the doorstep which will help to improve

their cattle breeding. In addition, this

project will also give employment to 240

local youth (centre in-charge of an ILDC)

as Gopal at their locality. On 28th April,

2017, all 240 ILDCs of AP Tribal Project have commenced after successful completion of 4 months' training programme

by the Gopals.

On this inaugural occasion, Mr. Shiv Kumar, IAS (PO, ITDA, Seethampeta of Srikakulam District) inaugurated

“Kadagandi” centre and interacted with farmers and informed them about the benefits of the programme and wished

them a grand success. Also in other districts i.e. West Godavari, East Godavari, Vizag and Vizianagaram, the respective

Assistant Directors – Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS) along with Panchayat heads

participated at the inaugural event of the respective centres.

Successfully Completed Training Programme for A.I. Technicians from Sikkim

A batch of 21 Maitri (Multipurpose A.I. Technician in Rural India) trainees sent by Sikkim Livestock Development Board

has successfully completed one month A.I. training during the period from 25th May to 23rd June, 2017 at “Dr. Vijaypat

Singhania Training Institute for Rural Development”, Gopalnagar, Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Initially, 24 trainees reported

but 3 left in between the training period due to sickness and finally 21 candidates have successfully completed the

training programme.

Fodder Training Programme for Government Veterinary Officers at Bhopal, M.P.

JK Trust, Madhya Pradesh organised a training programme on Fodder and Animal Farm Management at the office of

the Department of Animal Husbandry, Bhopal. The training was inaugurated by Dr. R.K. Rokade (Director),

Department of Animal Husbandry, Bhopal (M.P.) on 2nd June, 2017. Sixteen senior Veterinary Officers from

Department of Animal Husbandry-MP & eleven JK Trust officials participated in the training programme.

The objective of the training programme was to develop basic skills on improved fodder production practices and

created awareness on fodder conservation technologies. The topics covered during the two-day training programme

was focussed mainly on recently released high-yielding forages along with a suitable agronomic package of practices,

fodder conservation i.e. hay & silage preparation and its feeding practices, silvi-pasture & waste land management,

fodder seed production technology, animal farm management & heat-stress management.

Dr. A.K. Singh, Advisor (F.D.) highlighted the achievements of JK Trust in the field of improved varieties of fodder seed

production, hybrid slips production, Azolla demonstration, urea straw treatment, distribution of chaff cutters and

training and extension programme under RKVY scheme in various districts of Chhattisgarh. Director AH appreciated

the initiatives taken by the JK Trust for successful implementation of the programme.

On 3rd June, 2017, the participants had visited Government Jersey Farm at Bhadbhada, Bhopal in order to create

awareness of better animal management, fodder cultivation & calf-rearing etc.

Achievement of JK BovaGenix

As on 30th June 2017, total 1157 IVF embryos were produced from 663 oocyte aspirations conducted since inception.

Some of these embryos were transferred fresh and frozen and the remaining embryos were frozen for future use. Till

date, we have produced 26 nos. of IVF calves at our Gopalnagar and Vadgaon facility.

Some of the farms where we have done oocyte aspirations for production of IVF embryos during the period from April

to June 2017 are at:

à Lam Farm Guntur, Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Andhra Pradesh

à Farm of Mr. Rameshbhai Rupareliya, Gondal, Rajkot, Gujarat

à Rachana Khillar Farm, Indapur, Maharashtra

à Pawana Gir Farm, Ravet, Pune, Maharashtra

Gir is one of the best-recognised dairy breeds of India with the highest potential in milk production. Although the breed

is native of Gujarat, today it is found in almost all States of India and in many countries of the world. In Brazil, the Gir is

used as a Bos indicus breed. In the course of its evaluation through the ages, the Indian native Gir breed has

developed some special characteristics and is hence acclaimed the world over for their uniqueness. Gir is one of the

best cow breeds in the world.

Keeping in line with the objectives of the Government of India's “Rashtriya Gokul Mission”, aimed at preserving and

propagating the indigenous breeds of cattle such as Gir (Gujarat), Sahiwal (Punjab/Haryana), Tharparkar (Rajasthan),

Ongole (A.P.) & others, JK BovaGenix is concentrating to produce embryos from indigenous cows. We have a farm of

indigenous cows at both its ET (Embryo Transfer) and IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) Laboratory located at Pune in

Maharashtra and Gopalnagar, in Chhattisgarh. Out of that, an ideal Gir Donor Cow named as Radha (Gir-25077) is

showing wonderful results in IVF embryo production. She is placed at Dr. Vijaypat Singhania Centre of Excellence for

Assisted Reproductive Technologies in Livestock, Vadgaon-Rasai, Pune.

As on 30th June, 2017, 73 IVF embryos were produced from the 17 oocyte aspirations conducted with Radha. The OPU

sessions were conducted between the months of September 2016 to June 2017. Already, 12 recipients were diagnosed

as confirmed pregnant from the embryos of Radha.

JK BovaGenix is planning to create efficient, productive, and profitable offspring by using embryos from Radha.

L&T Financial Services CSR Project - At a glance

An initiative was taken by JK Trust in the year 2015 to implement a “Cattle Breed Improvement Programme” in 3

districts of Odisha namely Bhadrak, Cuttack and Jajpur by establishing 100 Integrated Livestock Development Centres

(ILDCs) with the CSR support of L&T Financial Services. L&T Financial Services has a big presence in these districts for

their Micro-Finance activities. The main objective of the programme is to upgrade/crossbreed the existing cows &

buffaloes through Artificial Insemination by using frozen semen of high pedigreed indigenous/exotic bulls. The

resulting upgraded/crossbred calves will be better milk yielder and will help in improving the socio-economic status of

the farmers especially the ones who are landless, marginal landholders and poor.

The project was implemented as per the allotment given by Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Dept., Govt.

of Odisha after an extensive baseline survey of the Breedable population in all the 100 centres. All 100 ILD centres

were established in phases and made operational by 1st November, 2016 and all are functional now. Total 650 villages

are getting benefited through 100 ILDCs established in Bhadrak,

Cuttack and Jajpur districts. Further, a total of 4,619 L&T Financial

Services borrowers are available in the ILDCs whose data were also

collected and mapped during the survey.

As a part of the extension education programme, lots of farmer

meetings, film show, and one-to-one contact meetings were

conducted during the initial phase of the project. Further, as this

project is supported under CSR by the L&T Financial Services, we

have been educating the borrowers of L&T Financial Services at the

Meeting Centres on designated Disbursement Dates. More than 3,300 nos. of L&T Financial Services borrowers are

benefited through these ILDCs.

More than 33,000 A.I. has been reported as on June 2017 which shows a good acceptance of the project by the

farmers. Besides Artificial Insemination, farmers are getting benefited

by other veterinary support services like castration, deworming, first

aid, fodder promotion etc. at their doorsteps. In addition, fodder

development activities have been taken up to promote fodder

demonstration plots at village level for the dissemination of fodder

production & its utilisation. More than 1.5 lakh Hybrid Napier root slips

have been distributed to around 250 progressive farmers.

We expect that this project will definitely help the farmers of these

areas for the upliftment of their economic condition by improving their cattle population.

Inauguration Ceremony of IDFC Foundation CSR Project II in Districts: Bhopal & Raisen

The IDFC Foundation has partnered with JK Trust to

carry out the Cattle Breed Improvement Programme

in various districts of Madhya Pradesh by

establishing 45 ILDCs in two different phases.

During Phase I, 25 ILDCs were established in Dhar,

Hoshangabad, Harda, Khandwa, and Khargone

districts during the period from April 2016 to August

2016.

In Phase II, another 20 ILDCs were established in

Bhopal, Dewas, Indore and Raisen districts during

the month of January to April 2017. Maliya ILDC of

Bhopal district and Polaha ILDC of Raisen district was launched on 27th April, 2017 by Hon'ble Chief Guest Mr. Arun

Nathan- Programme Director, IDFC Foundation - Mumbai and Special Guest Mr. Rameshwar Sharma - MLA - Bhopal,

accompanied by Mr. Mahesh Somani - Project Manager IDFC Foundation - Indore.

During the event - bags, AI kits and key of motor cycle were also distributed to Gopal (centre in-charge of ILDC). Many

villagers from nearby villages also participated actively in the event.

Visit of Dignitaries

Visit of Govt. Dignitaries of Chhattisgarh to Fodder Seed Development Centre, Chandkhuri

JK Trust, Chhattisgarh has been operating a Fodder Seed Development

Centre (FSDC) project under RKVY scheme in Chhattisgarh since last 4

years. The project is located over 75 acres of land at Chandkhuri in district

Raipur. The main objective of establishing fodder seed development

centre is to multiply quality fodder seed for its further distribution to the

farmers for higher milk yield. Apart from supplying fodder seeds, farmers

are also being trained in the fooder seed production at the farm.

On 6th April, 2017, a team of Govt. dignitaries comprising Mr. Ajay Singh

(Agriculture Production Commissioner), Dr. S.K. Pandey (Director Veterinary

Services), Mr. OP Choudhury (Collector, Raipur) & Dr. Naidu (JDVS, Raipur)

visited the FSDC project. During this visit, the team interacted with the

beneficiaries and was truly impressed by our activities. They all explored our

activities like standing crops & seed packaging etc. Dr. A.K. Singh (Advisor)

has explained all points related to crops. Mr. Ajay Singh (APC) & other govt.

officials have appreciated the work done by JK Trust.

Mr. Arun Nathan- Programme Director, IDFC Foundation along with Mr. Mahesh Somani - Project Manager visited

Andhiyari Cattle Care Camp - Hoshangabad district on 14th June, 2017.

The entire team appreciated the efforts of our team for organising the camp in a very systematic manner and making

it a successful one.

A total no. of 214 animals were treated in the camp. This included 201 first aid cases, 11 infertility cases, and pregnancy

diagnosis checked in two animals. This camp benefited around 40 dairy farmers.

JK Trust not only gives livelihood option to the rural youth but it also encourages the youth to pursue higher education.

In his own words…

“My name is Daya Ram Gurjar s/o Shree Ishwar Lal Gurjar residing in Vishanpur village, which comes under Vishanpur

Block of Dausa District. Before associating with JK Trust in Bikaner District in previous CBIP project, I was residing in

the village with my 6 family members i.e. my father, mother, two brothers, sister-in-law and a niece. At that time, my

father was the only earning member of our family, hence, fulfilling the daily needs for all of us was a very difficult task

for him. He was facing lots of problems in

our health, education, livelihood and other

necessary things related to living.

I was continuously struggling to help my

father with some kind of employment/daily

wage opportunity but I was helpless at that

moment. Suddenly a ray of hope emerged

when JK Trust

gave me a chance to manage an ILD Centre

in Bikaner District. JK Trust provided me the

training for 4 months, which included

classroom training as well as field training.

After the training, I had taken the charge of

one ILD Centre at Dandi Village in the District of Bikaner and I started my work in that area. I had worked hard to

improve the financial condition of my family and up to some extent, I achieved that. In the mean time, I also felt that

the villagers started respecting me as a veterinary doctor. After the successful completion of the project, I promised

myself that I will at least pursue an LSA (Livestock Assistant) degree to fulfil my dreams as well as to help the fellow

villagers of my area. Due to lack of money and family condition, I was unable to fulfil my dream as a Veterinary Doctor

but I felt that LSA degree along with training and exposure I received as a Gopal will definitely catch my dream up to

some extent. So, after completion of the old project of JK Trust, I took a loan on interest from the moneylenders to get

my LSA diploma degree and finally I successfully completed the course.

My connection with JK Trust did not end here. When I approached JK Trust again after pursuing my degree, the Trust

appointed me as a Gopal of an ILD Centre in Dausa District in their new CBIP project.

Today I can proudly say that now I am able to fully take care of my family and support the health and educational

expenditure of my brother's children. With the help of JK Trust, I have built my own cemented house in the village and

purchased 15 bighas of agriculture land. Today, people in my society respect me and give example to their children to

become Dayaram Gurjar.

For what I am today is because of the support and exposure I received from JK Trust. I would always be grateful for JK

Trust for helping me to make my dream come true.”

This is the case study of a rural youth whose life changed after his association with JK Trust as Gopal.
