Over the years, the problem of stress has been growing like a contagion affecting people of all walks of life. It is an invisible and lurking enemy causing damage to all human beings psychologically, socially and emotionally. The growing number of fratricidal killings in armed forces is indeed a great matter of concern for all us. The recent incident in CISF Units at Bokaro and Rourkela clearly indicates that CISF is also no exception. In most of such cases, psychologists say that stress is the root cause of such killings due to work load, family problems, marital issues, etc.,
Two decades back, we seldom heard people discussing about stress and its related disorders. However, now the scene has changed dramatically. We are witnessing yoga classes, meditation, conferences, etc every now and then all aimed at tackling stress. We are increasingly hearing about stress now a days in televisions and newspapers, etc, which goes to show the malady and its pervasiveness on all human beings. Childhood is said to be care free life where we think that children don’t experience stress at all. But the fact is that even school going children now a days are experiencing stress due to examinations, etc. leading to mental blocks, obsessive compulsive disorders, etc.
The moment we hear the word ‘stress’, we conjure up images of people with head aches, psychological problems, etc., The term is widely associated with negativity. Therefore, even before understanding what stress is and how it affects the human body, it is necessary to know that stress is an integral part of our daily life and an optimum amount of stress will act as energizer and motivator to get us moving. Without stress, we cannot lead happy lives. As there is no life without stress, leading stress free lives, as most of the people claim, is only a wishful thinking and therefore neither possible nor desirable.
Certain amount of stress is very much necessary which will pump the adrenaline to get us going.
WHEN STRESS INTRUDING OUR LIVES ….
SI/Steno K Mahabub Ali, Indoor Instructor/ NISA
Hans Selve, one of the pioneers in the field of stress management, calls it ‘eustress’, borrowed from the Greek prefix, ‘eu’, meaning good.
Food is necessary for all of us for sustenance. However, if we take lots of food than necessary, it will only do harm in the form of obesity, ulcers, etc., than good. It is exactly the case with stress also. While certain amount of stress is essential, ‘excessive’ amounts of stress will wreak havoc with the lives of the people. It will become a bane rather than a boon. This is a very important thing, which everybody needs to understand to cope with stress in a better way.
There are many ways and means to
overcome stress successfully. They are simple yet powerful. Practicing of acceptance is a powerful stress buster. The problem of stress will arise only when we don’t accept something. Similarly, while many suggestions can be given to beat stress like regular exercises, doing yoga & meditation, improving time management skills, anger management, the art of saying no, etc. However, for doing all the above, you must have sufficient time. In the fast paced life styles, it is difficult to find out sufficient time for the purpose. Therefore, the simplest yet difficult thing to do is CHANGING our mind set from negative to positive. It is said that stress is nothing but attitude. Among others like money, hard work, experience, ATTITUDE fulfills that 100% to be necessary to lead a happy, healthier and successful life. Right from waking up in the morning to sleep in the night, we think on various matters. Therefore, if our mind is filled with full of negative thoughts, then it is a daily grinding resulting in lot of stress and strain taking its toll in many ways.
In the context of armed forces, a series of
counter measures including counseling and yoga classes have been undertaken to help men/women to cope with stress. However, the same needs to be intensified for better results.
