NEWSLETTER There continues to be a flurry of activity and excitement at Canfield High School. The first nine weeks recently ended and it is truly exciting to witness the incredible growth that has already taken place in our students. We have the privilege to visit classrooms routinely, which gives us the chance to see the level of creativity and engagement taking place throughout the building. For example, students in physics recently participated in an activity called “Mobile Mania” which is one of eight performance-based projects in Mr. Hlaudy’s courses. Winning “Best in Show” was a mobile called “Christmas” which is pictured above. This exciting activity truly has students putting their knowledge of physic’s principles into authentic and applied learning activities. The fall sports season has now concluded for all teams and there is a special recap of the success of our teams in this issue written by our Athletic Director, Mr. Greg Cooper. Excitement is building for the Canfield Player’s production of Mary Poppins the Musical, which will hit the stage this coming weekend! Performance times and ticketing information can be found in this newsletter. We also invite the community to save the date for both our Holiday Choir Concert on December 10 th and our Holiday Band Concert on December 17 th . Bring family and friends to usher in the holidays with performance by these exemplary students! We would also like to congratulate the CHS Speech and Debate Team who is off to a tremendous start taking first place in four meets over three weekends! Finally, just a reminder that state testing will begin for some students in December. With Ohio’s new assessments, students take state tests when they complete certain courses as opposed to the former end of year assessments. More information on state testing will be released soon. CARDINAL NEWS Georgio Poullas Competes Nationally

Canfield High School junior 152 pound wrestler, Georgio Poullas, placed 6th at the highly competitive and prestigious Super 32 preseason national tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina. The tournament featured over 1,500 of the nations best high school wrestlers from 41 different states with 43% of those wrestlers being nationally ranked by Flowrestling.org.

Poullas entered the tournament as a relatively unknown on the national scene but quickly turned heads as he reeled off 4 straight wins to reach the quarter final round. Along the way Poullas defeated a multiple time state placer winner from New Jersey, a state champion from Florida, a state runner up from Illinois, and the number 12 nationally ranked wrestler from New York. Poullas finished the tournament with a 6 -3 record, with all of his losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.

Coach Stephen Pitts said of Poullas' performance, "He (Poullas) really opened some doors for himself this weekend, and it is more than likely that Georgio will find himself in the national rankings."

A New Partnership Results in a New Scoreboard for CHS Softball

The Canfield Local School District announces a partnership with the North American Dental Group’s affiliate Refresh Dental for the sponsorship of a new Canfield High School Softball

Scoreboard. The partnership agreement was signed on Friday, November 13, 2015.

“Our new partnership with the North American Dental Group is not only a commitment to the district but also to the Canfield community,” says Alex Geordan, Superintendent. The partnership is worth $20,000 to the district, on a five year agreement.

”Our local community is very important to us and service to the community is part of our organizational core values” stated NADG

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ken Cooper. “Our contribution to Canfield High will give students and their families access to a better facility, lift their morale, and make the athletic program better at the school. We really appreciate this opportunity.”

Andy McBryde, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for NADG echoed that sentiment when he stated “We are always happy to invest in our roots of the Mahoning Valley and to remain a trusted partner in this community.”

Canfield Students Take Flight

Several Canfield students will take flight including Rosie Bresson who plays Mary Poppins, David Labra cast as Bert, Nicole Schmidt playing Jane, and Simon Kovass playing Michael. The most complicated flight is performed by David Labra and includes somersaulting and dance moves. Labra says, “It is just unbelievably challenging and fun. I can’t wait to perfect all of the moves I learned. I think it’s going to add a lot to the show.”

“Disney magic takes a lot of work,” says Becky Heikkinen, Director. It took two fourteen-hour days to construct the mechanics that go into the flying. Heikkinen adds, “Everyone is going to enjoy this production, and the ability to fly adds an exciting element. We are very lucky that the Canfield community supports the arts so that we can have a production of this caliber.”
