A temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, its origin goes back to a
temple in Mt. Hiei built by the sect Founder Saicho. Ojo Gokurakuin
within the grounds has been located here since its foundation in the
12th century, and Amidasanzon images in the temple have been
designated as national treasures. In the moss garden, you can see
the adorable “Warabe jizo” that looks as if children are playing
together. In late autumn, colorful leaves beautifully appear among
the Japanese cedar trees and the contrast of the autumn colors
with the moss green is most attractive.

Take a tour of “Ohara,” a mountain village in Kyoto.
Kyoto Recommends selections
Ohara is a mountain village located in the northeast of Kyoto city where a tranquil rural
landscape surrounded by mountains remains. Ohara developed as a way-stop where Wakasa
Kaido Road, which connected Wakasa Bay on the Sea of Japan coast with Kyoto city, passed
through. Because this road used to be used to transport products from the sea, especially Saba
(mackerel), it is also called Saba Kaido Road.
Ohara is located at the foot of Mt. Hiei and is the home of Enryakuji Temple, the head temple
of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, and historically has a deep connection with this sect. Daigenji
Temple, which was founded at the beginning of the 10th century, was prosperous as a dojo for
Shomyo, a form of Buddhist music setting sutra to a musical scale. Gradually, many people
including members of the Imperial Family, world weary aristocrats, and those who were
living in hiding from the capital considered Ohara as a sacred place and started to gather there.
You can enjoy the tranquil mountain village atmosphere where mustard flowers bloom in
spring and cosmos bloom in autumn among the thatched roof houses.
Autumn leaves are the most beautiful in mid-November each year. Each temple has different
scenery of autumn leaves, so let’s appreciate them together with the buildings and gardens.
Because Ohara is surrounded by mountains, it gets dark early and is chilly in the evenings.
Wear warm clothes when visiting a nighttime seeing.

1Temples in Ohara have gardens that showcase the exquisite scenery of Kyoto. Each garden is unique; Sanzen-in Temple has a moss garden, the garden in Hosen-in Temple looks like a framed painting and the garden in Jakko-in brings to mind the history of the area.

Autumn night illuminationOhara Hosen-in Temple and Shorin-in Temple
This temple was founded as one of the Shorin-in Temple quarters. Once you step
inside the entrance gate, a neat-looking Japanese white pine tree appears that is
approximately 700 years old. By using the pillars of the building to make up a
picture frame, you can enjoy a picture-like view of the garden from inside the
temple. During daytime hours, they serve green tea. Nighttime visits are held
during the autumn leaves period and you can appreciate fantastic views, which are
different from daytime.
Hosen-in Temple宝泉院B
It is said that this old temple was founded at the end of the 6th century by Prince
Shotoku, whose portrait appeared on the former 10,000 yen bill. In autumn, maple
leaves growing on the stone steps of the approach are tinted with autumn colors
and the main temple is wrapped with colorful leaves. The small garden facing the
pond looks beautiful from any angle and is therefore called, the garden with a
façade on every side.

Oharame are female peddlers who used to visit the town of Kyoto from Ohara to sell firewood. They wore a unique outfit of a navy blue kimono, an apron, and a handkerchief on their heads, on top of which they put the firewood. The origin of Oharame goes back to the end of 12th century. Today, only women can experience wearing the Oharame outfit. If you walk around in this outfit, you can receive special services such as temple admission fee discounts and souvenir items.
Shiso is a native Japanese herb that has grown in Japan for a
long time. The characteristics of Shiso are its refreshing taste
and aroma, making it an indispensable ingredient for Japanese
food and one of Ohara’s special products. “Shibazuke,” a
traditional pickle in Kyoto, was first made in Ohara, and its rich
aroma that spreads inside your mouth stimulates your appetite.
Doi Shibazuke, a well-established pickle store, specializes in
rice cooked in Kamado (an old-style Japanese kitchen range)
with a buffet including seasonal pickles also proving popular.

Highly popular and exclusive restaurants require prior reservations.
These restaurants, after getting a reservation, perfectly organize seating
and rooms for their guests, planning the menu and providing all the
special ingredients beforehand—these are all to welcome and
entertain guests with superb hospitality & manner. Please think about
their professionalism and the time spent which the restaurant has taken
to welcome each and every guest. Try not be late for the reservation or
not showing up at the restaurant without making a cancellation call.
When you cannot go to the restaurant, make sure to give a cancellation
call. Trips to Kyoto will become further enjoyable, when you receive
such a welcoming spirit that will compliment your cuisine.

How to enjoy a ryokan (Japanese style hotel)
where you can touch the essence of Japanese hospitality culture
When you visit Japan, we recommend staying at a ryokan
where you can experience real Japanese hospitality
culture. By following several rules, you can have a peace-
ful and comfortable stay.
Column
Large public baths are familiar to Japanese
people as places to relax. If you observe the
etiquette that allows many people to take a
bath comfortably, you can enjoy the bath
without having to worry. You cannot take a
bath in your bathing suit. Take off all of your
clothes in the changing room. Wash your
body before getting into the bath. Do not
soak your towel in the bathtub and tie up
your hair if you have long hair.
How to get into a hot spring or large public bath
T h e Yukat a is a c asual t y p e of kim on o.
Because wearing a Yukata is an opportunity
to experience dressing in a kimono casually,
we encourage you to try it. You cannot use a
Yukata as a towel so please dry your body
thoroughly after taking a bath before putting
it on. If you wear a Yukata neatly, walking
around the ryokan in your Yukata is allowed.
Yukata can open easily, so please refrain from
walking around taking big strides.
Let's wear a Yukata.
What makes a Japanese-type house unique is
its tatami matting. It is said that the unique
aroma of the soft rushes has an aromatherapy
effect, and you can feel relaxed as though you
were walking in the forest. Tatami mats are soft
and springy, and excellent for heat insulation
and heat retention. On the other hand, tatami
mats can be easily damaged, so dragging your
wheeled suitcase and entering a tatami room
with your shoes on are strictly prohibited.
Tatami culture
Chopsticks are indispensable for dining in
Japan. You pinch food together with the two
sticks and bring it to your mouth. You need to
get the knack of using chopsticks, but why
don't you give it a try? In Japan, people hold a
rice bowl and soup bowl in their hands when
eating. Conversation at the table is allowed,
but do not talk with your mouth full. Try to eat
everything with nothing left over.

the ochaya (teahouse) and the okiya (geiko house),
