Data Collecting Techniques

I believe in making data driven decisions when it comes to optimizing the user experience. In order to collect data I use:

• Custom Javascript tracking events that send data to Google Analytics to track user activity and trends.

• Zendesk. Zendesk allows users to ask questions through the site opening up a direct line of communication between myself and the user. This allows me to not only diagnose problem areas it also allows me to ask user research questions normally reserved for surveys.

• Inspectlet. Inspectlet allows me to watch actual footage of the users experience along with heat/click maps. Being able to watch users interact with the product allows me to escape the eye and thought pattern of a designer and get into the mindset of an average user.

• User Experience Surveys. I gravitate towards Google Forms when creating and distributing these surveys. I also have experience with Survey Monkey and Formstack.

Process and Work Examples

*Some examples are blurred due to proprietary information.*This process involves examples from my most recent job experience.

Flow Charts

During the product planning phase I first create a user flow chart, often focusing on the ideal user flow.

Wireframing

After completing user flow I create a wire-frame using programs such as Balsamiq seen here.

Page 9: Kyle Eaton: User Experience Designer and Developer

I create all CSS/Javascript animations single-handedly/myself while also assisting graphic designers by creating static content.

Content Creation

After wire-framing and creating a user flow chart. I would then work along side the design team guiding them in creating content that allows functionality and responsive design.

As the backend developer works on the project, I begin to develop the front-end material using HTML, CSS, Javascript, JQuery, and Angular.js

Development

When the design process is complete or near completion I partner up with a back-end developer. Together, we review to establish back-end requirements.

Analytics Planning

During or after the development process I analyze the product and its functions and begin to identify locations in which I will place custom click events they will be sent to Google Analytics in order to track the key-metrics of the product. This helps to establish future A/B testing materials.

The figure to the left is an example of how I map out events for Google Analytics.

Here is a closer look of the figure to the left.

Every analytics plan includes a written report addressing: 1. An explanation of how these custom click events are being used,2. How they will be implemented onto an easy to view dashboard,3. What important key-metrics are being tracked for future improvements, and;4. Other important goals it intends to accomplish.
