A Word from Governor JoAnn Greetings KY OH WV Pilots!!!
A big THANK YOU to the Pilot Club of Lexington for being our host for
the Fall Workshop. I also want to thank everyone who was able to attend
the Workshop. What fun and laughter and socializing we had.
I especially would like to thank Patti Mettle, District PI Rep. and Phyllis
Mayne, District Awards Chair for their presentations and hand outs on
Scholarships and Awards. Also our Team Leaders for the “Weathering the
Storm” and “Soaring Over the Storm” discussions: Sue Trautwein and
Susan Campbell, District Leadership Co-Coordinators, Teddi May, Past
Governor, Della Cline, Governor-Elect, Judy McWhorter, District
Fundraising Co-Coordinator, and Kathy Marich and Mary Pat Owen,
District Membership Co-Coordinators.
A big Thank You to Marie Gravely for the excellent job in developing the
District Directory and most of all for guidance in the “Weathering the
Storm” and “Soaring Over the Storm” discussions. She kept us right on
task.
Jackie Barley kept busy selling our District Flags and Directories which
added additional funds to our coffers.
If you haven't heard, we will be chartering a new Pilot Club in the Canton
Stark County Area. JoAnn Sholl, Della Cline, Jackie Barley and Mary
Mueller are working on this project. This will be excellent training for our
members. We will have visitors from PI for the Charter signing. We are
hoping to get a new club in KY and WV also.
Club visits are moving right along. Della and I are sharing information from
Pilot International Convention and Fall Workshop with anyone who may
have missed these informative events.
Next month the nominating committee will be requesting nominations for
our District Officers. Please be thinking about who you would like to
nominate as Governor Elect, Treasurer, and Secretary.

Dear KOW Pilot friends,
Greetings, KOW Pilots!
Those of you who attended a very successful and memorable Fall
Workshop, undoubtedly, returned to your clubs with renewed passion
for Pilot and great ideas for implementation! For those who were
unable to attend, plan now for next year and double your
attendance. KOW Pilots are a wonderful group of dedicated service
volunteers and an inspiration to others!
On October 6, Pilots from around the world will share with others
our focus on brain awareness by participating in the PI Brain Power
Walk. Share the Pilot message wherever you walk. And Happy
Founder’s Day on October 18! Established in 1921, Pilot
International is an energetic and dynamic 91 years old! What a
legacy of friendship and service for us to enjoy and to share! What
better way to celebrate one of our Membership Months (the other
month is March) than by bringing someone new into Pilot…who will
you ask to join us?
Please be sure to complete the Pilot International Strategic
Planning Survey that was distributed through Constant Contact.
You may also access the survey through this link: http://

Thank you for all that you do in the name of Pilot.

ARTICLES OF INCORPORATION
It is of great importance that PI has a COPY of each club's Articles of Incorporation for their files. They are hoping that the 501c3 ruling for the clubs will be completed
sometime in October. They need the actual copy to check wording & not just the renewal notice. If you do not have a copy, you will need to contact the Secretary of State in your state to obtain. If you have any questions or if you need help, please
contact Jackie Barley, District Treasurer; 330-309-8772; [email protected].
My cup runneth over!! Thank you Pilots for all the encouraging words at Fall Workshop. I needed those. So I decided to write this column on the value of
encouragement.
Have you ever thought about the power that our words can have on others? Our words can either hurt or heal a person and every time we open our mouths we can make that
choice. We can either encourage, build up, and give hope to the person or we can tear down and discourage the person. Webster’s Dictionary defines the work as “to
inspire with courage, spirit, or help; to help or hearten.”
Few of us, I’m sure, realize the difference that a word or an action from us, can make in a life. We certainly can’t live
in a vacuum and expect to be encouragers. We must think, feel, see and hear. We must truly care; we must desire the very best for one another. There are different ways that we
can be encouragers. (1) Verbally tell someone (2) through a
written not or (3) physically embrace someone.
I think VERBAL ENCOURAGEMENT is the easiest type and is certainly essential for our health and well-being. It is
important that we hear encouraging words from others that
tell us why we make a significant difference in their lives.
How many of you say encouraging words to your barber or
beautician, the grocery clerk or your mailman? Encouragement needs to happen everywhere. Most of these people hear only complaints or criticism and rarely do we
take the time to say nie things to them, even though verbal encouragement doesn’t take long. Often times, we think compliments have to be great meaningful sentences of
praise, and do not even realize that just those two little words, “thank you” can mean so much to others. We should never leave words unspoken that may make others feel
happy and encouraged.
Another type is the WRITTEN ENCOURAGEMENT which can be filed away for future reference. I’m thankful for my friends, especially at church, who have chosen to write their
encouraging words down. There have been many days when I needed to pull out my box of encouraging notes and cards,
reminding me that I’m a person of worth.
The PHYSICAL ENCOURAGEMENT is for many of us the most difficult to implement because it involves a sacrifice of
our time, money or material possessions.
Fortunately for us, though, there are some people for whom
giving of themselves comes naturally. Sometimes just a person’s presence can be complete encouragement. When words are inadequate a hug, or even just a touch, can reveal
some hope or comfort and say, “I support your” or “I believe in you.” Sometimes we may never know how much our
efforts mattered.
Being an encourager may not be inherent in our nature, but it is a “gift” we can all develop. After we make the decision to be an encourager, it can happen wherever we are. There are
people all around us and in our Pilot Clubs who need to be encouraged. If we are going to be encouragers, we must be ever mindful of the power of words and actions. A
compliment can last a lifetime. Maybe our thoughtful comments will do the same for someone. WE may never
know how our lives may impact someone else.

Enjoyed seeing every one that attended the Fall Workshop and the wonderful Lexington Pilots that saw that we were well taken care of.
Your Governor Elect will be visiting Clubs during November and December and looking forward to seeing more Pilots during that time. I'll be getting in contact with those Presidents to
make the final plans while we are spending October in Pigeon Forge.

Dear Pilots:
“If you do not like something, change it. If you can not
change it, change your attitude.” Maya Angelou
Being a new president for Pilot Club of Charleston, I am
instituting these very words. This year our club will have many new programs while nurturing the old programs. Our old programs that are so popular – Make-A-Difference
Day, Founders Day, Sweetheart Day and continuing our piggy bank collection to send a child to camp, million penny drive for the Salvation Army to help the less
fortunate and collecting cereal for Manna Meal for the homeless are successful. Our new programs we will build on, are All Decoration and House Ware sale, East End yard
sale, Luminaries and Broom sale, to mention a few. I have encouraged all members to become active and involved so
we can “soar to new heights”.
I can say, WOW, it has been a fabulous two months being a representative of a wonderful club. Being president is a revelation to say the least. With the clubs help we have put
together a great executive board that is there for every question, thought, or suggestion from members and we have great teamwork. We only get better with the in put of
our members
We just finished our first project – August 25, we had our All Decoration and House ware Sale. Seventeen members helped in making the project a wonderful and surprising
event. The day was gorgeous, with sunshine and blue skies. The camaraderie and bonding experience with members cannot be explained in any amount of words. It
was a PILOT MOMENT IN TIME!
Thank you, Martha Ferrell, Pilot Club of Charleston
Governor JoAnn’s sister, Beth Geiselman, formerly from the Pilot Club of Canton club 20 years and then the Pilot Club of Akron passed away about three
years ago. Beth was very supportive of the Stark County Special Olympics. An annual swimming award for a special needs individual will be named
after Beth to honor her for her work with the Stark County Swimming Association and Special
Olympics.
Julie Quinones, Treasurer, and Norma Raiff, President, members of the Pilot Club of Springfield,
OH, attended the Pilot International Conference in Las
Vegas in July 2012.
Norma Raiff, President, Julie Quinones, Treasurer, Ann Summer, President Elect, and Jane Engle,
Director, Pilot Club of Springfield, OH, attended the 2012 Clark State Community College Welcome Back
event, which welcomes back the students for the new school year.
They shared the friendship of Pilot Club as well as information about the different projects the Springfield
Pilot Club are involved with.
The Pilot Club of Dayton took a group picture at their September meeting at the Ronald McDonald House. This was Wendy
Waller’s last meeting as her husband, Seth, found a job in Jacksonville, FL. They are going back home Looks like our loss will be
Jacksonville’s gain with a great new member.
We will surely miss Wendy!!!

Club News
The Pilot Club of Greater Kanawha Valley is off to another great year. We are again collecting plastic bottle, beverage and other lids; aluminum beverage tab; and used printer and copy machine toner cartridges for recycling. We also are collecting Box Tops for Education and Campbell’s Soup Labels to send to St. Jude’s to assist in funding education-related expenses for
the St. Jude’s children. St. Jude’s also has a Recycled Card Program we participate in. Each month, we have designated a
different item for members to bring to meetings to be donated to local schools and agencies.
Our main projects for the coming year are the selling of brooms (Quinn kitchen brooms and locally made Household
brooms for $10.00 each), Elder Beerman Community Day Coupon Booklet sales in October and November, gift wrapping at the Charleston Town Center Mall between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and our P. Buckley Moss print raffle which will take
place from January to April.
Our meetings thus far this year have been very productive and informative. We have had as speakers, Mr. Perry
Cox, Director, Spring Hill Cemetery Park, Charleston, WV., Mr. Larry L. Rowe, Attorney, who gave us a very informative talk about the U. S. Constitution and retired Lt. Col. Jack Buckalew who gave us the history and current events regarding Safety City, the mini city operated by the Charleston, WV Police Department that our Club supports. Thanks to Kelly L.
George, we are looking forward to very interesting program meetings throughout the year.
We are looking forward to our October meeting, which will be a joint meeting with the Pilot Club of St. Albans, and
we together, will be hosting a visit from our District Governor, JoAnn Sholl.

ANCHOR NEWS
In August, while at PI International, as I spent time with the Anchors, I
realized how much our district
Anchors were missing out on. In the past the KY-OH-WV District
Anchors have not really had much
involvement in the Pilot Program. So I am happy to
say that we are starting a new and exciting year. There are new plans for the district and hopefully some more
enjoyable experiences for our Anchors. Being an
Anchor is more than just belonging to a club...it is an experience where the Anchor’s community service
touches people’s lives. It can change their life as well as
the lives around them. They can really have fun and
make a difference.
News from The St. Albans Anchor Club
Each year tradition is carried on by Homecoming Week at SAHS. Not only is there a football game and dance
at the end of the week, but several activities throughout
the week. One of the main focuses during school time
is Fun Day. This gives all the students the opportunity to show school spirit by participating in activities such
as dunking booth, inflatable’s, and Powder Puff football
game. The Anchor Club is in charge of the Powder Puff game. They allow girls to sign up in the weeks
prior to the game, design a shirt for the girls to wear as
uniforms, then are in charge of making sure the games
are carried out successfully. Along with the Powder Puff game, they also have a fundraising booth where
they sell soda, water, and pizza. The money raised is
used toward games and activities for the St. Albans Community Halloween party, which is held every year
the night of trick-or-treat in the school Commons.
THE ANCHORS ARE COMING!!!
THE ANCHORS ARE COMING!!!
For the first time, for our district, the Anchors will be
attending the KY-OH-WV District Convention in April 2013. More details to follow.
THERE WILL BE FUN…FUN…FUN.
