Minimum Requirements

• Optional RAM

K:Works collection does not require any optional RAM (P-RAM, sample RAM). However, the installation of RAM (P-RAM) is recommended if you wish to use a large number of sound banks in combination with the internal sequencer.

• Optional ROM

K:Works “EX” version requires that the following optional ROM Boards to be installed:

o K2600 - Contemporary and Orchestral ROM boards o K2500 - ST Piano, Contemporary and Orchestral ROM boards o K2000 - Contemporary and Orchestral ROM boards

K:Works “LE” version does not require any optional ROM Boards. Note Our K:Works soundware collection for Kurzweil K2661 instruments is virtually identical to the “EX” version for K2600 instruments, however, the technical documentation and the text notes in the sound banks are different. Since all Kurzweil K2661 instruments come with factory installed Orchestral and Contemporary ROM boards, K:Works “LE” version for these instruments is not supplied.

• Operation System

o K2661 - Current OS version o K2600 - Current OS version o K2500 - OS version 2.52 or higher o K2000 - Will be specified once the K2000 collection is finalized.

Note

OS upgrades for Kurzweil K2661/2600/K2500 instruments can be downloaded from the Download section of Kurzweil website http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com. Kurzweil K2000 OS upgrades will have to be supplied by your local Kurzweil dealer.

Loading Files from Floppy Disks Please note we strongly recommend that you backup your original sound programs prior to loading K:Works soundware to your K2xxx instrument. Insert a K:Works floppy disk into your Kurzweil K2600/K2500 or K2000 instrument floppy disk drive and press the Disk button. Using the Alpha Wheel or Plus/Minus buttons set the Current Disk on the display to: Floppy and press the Load soft button. The display will show the K:Works root folder (all K:Works folder names and product codes are identical e.g. K26MS1EX – Kurzweil K2600/Modern Synth/Volume 1/EX. For a detailed list of product codes refer to the Product Code List which you can find on your K:Works CD). Next, press the OK soft button. The display will show the list of respective sound banks. Using the Alpha Wheel or Plus/Minus buttons select the required bank and press the OK soft button again. The display will show the “Load this file as: 200…299” option. Using the Alpha Wheel or Plus/Minus buttons select the destination RAM position to load the bank in (e.g. 200…299 or 300…399, etc.). Next, load the selected bank by pressing either the Fill soft button or one of the other soft buttons dedicated for this function (Append, Overwrite, etc.). For less experienced K2xxx users, the use of the Fill soft button is recommended.

K:Works - Reference Guide

Note Some of the K:Works sound banks contain more than 100 programs. If you use the Overwrite soft button some sound programs in the next RAM bank will be overwritten as well (e.g. sound bank including 150 programs will take up numbers 200 – 349, etc.).

For other ways of loading K:Works soundware to your K2xxx instrument such as data transfer via a SCSI port or with Smart Cards (Kurzweil K2661), consult your original Kurzweil manual supplied with your instrument or the help file of the software, usually used for this purpose. Should you not have access to the original Kurzweil manual, you can download it for free from the Download section of Kurzweil website http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com. Soundware Description The complete K:Works collection contains the largest ever made offer of sound programs for Kurzweil K2xxx instruments. This collection caters for a timeless and extensive application in studio work as well as in live performance. When you first start familiarizing yourself with K:Works soundware, it is recommended that you proceed slowly and methodically and if necessary that you consult the technical documentation. In order to draw on the full potential of sound programs, it is necessary to take advantage of the complete range of settings offered by each of the main controllers (e.g. Modulation Wheel, Pitch Wheel, Data Entry, etc.). As a standard, most of the sound banks include useful text notes about used controller. While using individual controllers or their combinations you will find that the resulting sound often changes dramatically which frequently brings a new inspiration. Because the parameters for each controller have been carefully preset, you should not expect any extreme unpleasant changes when adjusting the controllers, especially not so for the sounds types for which such dramatic changes would be, for obvious reasons, undesirable. For explanations of all controller abbreviations and for a complete listing of all text notes used with each sound bank, please refer to the “Sound Program List” document on your K:Works CD. As Kurzweil K2xxx instrument programming can be time consuming and somewhat cumbersome at times, certain sound programs include a small number of variations. Having these variations available will help you quickly choose between different tone colors without the need of adjusting the parameters of the base sound program. In the case of some sound programs, we have included a larger number of their variations. Where this is so, these variations were carefully selected and included in the sound bank in order to add value to the professional user. Many of these variations are provided free of charge as a bonus. As mentioned above all original Kurzweil ROM and FARM programs (re-categorized and reordered to aid ease of navigation, access and use) are also provided free of charge as a bonus. For a complete list of all K:Works collection programs, please refer to the “Sound Program List” document on your K:Works CD. To allow for future K:Works collection development and expansion without the need for frequent restructuring in order to maintain a continuity of the sound banks and of its individual programs we have, in most cases, listed the original Kurzweil programs at the beginning of each relevant bank. Where a K:Works sound bank contains original Kurzweil programs these were clearly labeled so that they can be immediately identified as such. For more information, relating to the total number of original Kurzweil ROM and FARM programs in individual sound banks, etc., please refer to “Product Details” and “Sound Program List“ documents on your K:Works CD.

Depending on your K:Works soundware product type, it may be possible for you to take advantage of a product upgrade or crossgrade in the future (bundles only). For more information and instructions on how to order these products please visit the “Ordering Info” section of our website http://www.aos-pro.com. Product ID Number document is included on your K:Works CD (if applicable). This document contains a unique registration number and some basic information on how to take advantage of this product upgrade or crossgrade offer. Note

All K:Works programs for Kurzweil K2500 instruments were created exclusively with the internal Digitech DSP unit. Should your instrument be fitted with the KDFX option also, we recommend that you use the Digitech DSP unit with these programs to ensure correct function of the effect settings. However, for further editing of K:Works sound programs, it is possible to use the KDFX processor.

K:Works Categories

• Analog & Digital

Sound programs in this category contain emulations of some vintage synthesizers (e.g. Moog, Oberheim, ARP, Prophet, PPG, etc.) also included in this category are many sound program variations which are very well suited for the majority of all recent music styles. The sound programs in this category were created with a special emphasis on capturing the so called “old school” feeling. A wide range FX and noise programs is included also as a part of this category. These are likely to add value to both studio arrangements as well as to live performance. We highly recommend the use of the full range of the various controller settings when working with these programs. Each particular sound bank contains information about which controllers are activated for a given sound program group. This information is included also in the “Sound Program List” document on your K:Works CD.

• Orchestral*

The Orchestral category contains new sound programs with which we attempted to complement the existing and already comprehensive Kurzweil soundware. With kind permission from company Kurzweil, all original Kurzweil K2xxx ROM and FARM programs included in this category are redistributed free of charge. As is the case with all other K:Works categories, these original programs have been carefully re-categorized and reordered to make them easier to navigate, access and use. All emulations of individual classical instruments contained on ROM boards and program FARMs together with the new K:Works programs have also been re-categorized in discrete sound banks. This greatly aids in selecting each required sound program. This is a concept for which we have already been highly praised by numerous professional users of K2xxx instruments so we trust that you will find our new categorization equally valuable. As part of our new category structure, we have included a separate folder named BONUS which contains two sound banks with programs we recommend for regular use while working on compositions. The first BONUS sound bank, “BEST OF”, contains a selection of what we consider to be the best original Kurzweil programs. This sound bank can be very effectively used for initial orchestral theme development and for initial arrangement of short orchestral segments. Better suited programs can be chosen, at a later stage, from the entire range in this program category.

The second BONUS sound bank, “US MIX”, contains a variety of layers and splits which are intended to stimulate inspiration and which can also be used for composition of movie soundtracks.

• Modern Synth

This category offers a very comprehensive collection of sound programs created especially for the majority of modern music styles. All programs in this category contain a combination of internal PCM samples of analog waveforms (Saw, Square, Sine, etc.) and internal digital oscillators additionally processed with frequency filters (Low Pass, Hi Pass, Notch, etc.) or with the aid of the various functions of individual V.A.S.T. algorithms. In addition, most of the modulation parameters are assigned with envelopes and controllers (Modulation Wheel, Data Entry, Aftertouch, Velocity, etc.) and using them will present you with a great range of further sound variations. Because of the complexity associated with K2xxx program editing and because such editing can be time consuming, we have included in this category a certain number of sound variations which differ in the way in which the base modulation parameters are preset. Often, the best way to select the most suitable sound program is to play your sound motif or loop in the sequencer while simultaneously browsing the sound programs with the data dial, at the same time changing the parameters of the programs with the relevant controllers. Although our Modern Synth category is very comprehensive, we would like to encourage each user to explore the boundaries of their instrument through further sound program editing. To achieve a concise and at-a-glance easy to follow list of parameters, all numerical values for functions not utilized by a program were removed. In order to guarantee a full upgrade and crossgrade compatibility of K:Works soundware with all K2xxx series instruments, the “Triple Mode” function of the K2600 and K2661 instruments has not been used. However, we would like to encourage K26xx series instrument users to experiment with this function which, for example, allows the user to append an additional resonance filter (24dB or 12dB Low Pass or Hi Pass) to some sound programs which, in their basic form, already use an envelope controlled frequency filter. The additional resonance filters can be assigned to any controller which is not in use allowing the user to further expand the potential of the K:Works programs and at the same time giving them the opportunity to control the programs in real time. However, please keep in mind, that all K:Works programs altered in this way are still protected by copyright laws and therefore cannot be redistributed freely or for gain or profit without our prior permission.

• Workshop

This category offers a large number of sound programs further sub-categorized below according to various music styles:

o Ambient This sub-category contains sound programs suitable for all kinds of Ambient, Esoteric and New Age music. Some of the sound programs (Pads, etc.) use specially adjusted controllers some of which can be used to extend the Attack time at which the amplitude envelope take effect while others can be used to extend the Release time. These controllers can be used to adjust each respective amplitude envelope element in the real time.

o Pop

This sub-category contains sound programs best suited for mainstream popular music. As is the case with other K:Works categories some programs in the “Pop” sub-category include certain variations of a base program. These variations provide users with a range of choices which can be accessed quickly and without the need for

K:Works - Reference Guide

immediate sound editing. These sound variations are in most cases provided free of charge as a bonus. With kind permission from company Kurzweil, all original Kurzweil K2xxx ROM and FARM programs included in this category are redistributed free of charge. As is the case with all other K:Works categories these original programs have been carefully re-categorized and reordered to make them easier to navigate, access and use. For more information please refer to chapter “Soundware Description” or to “Product Details” and “Sound Program List” documents on your K:Works CD.

o Dance

This sub-category contains sound programs which use mainly internal PCM samples (Strings, Voices, Organs, Pianos, etc.). These samples are specially modulated by various frequency filters or by various modulation functions of individual V.A.S.T. algorithms. When working with these programs, we recommend the use of the controllers mentioned directly in each of the sound banks. This category also contains sound programs with a variety of interval tuning. These programs are very well suited for House music for example.

o Rock, Jazz and Ethno Sound programs in this sub-category come from a selection of various instrument emulations most suited for these particular music styles. The programs in this sub-category are further divided into three folders:

Rock This folder contains the majority of Electric Bass and Electric Guitar programs

together with some other base programs (Organs, Pianos and Synth Pads). Jazz

This folder contains sound programs created especially for Jazz Music. For

this reason, the velocity settings of some programs have been adjusted in order to produce sounds which can be more effectively utilized while

employing techniques and styles pertaining to Jazz music. Ethno*

This folder contains both classic as well as experimental combinations of

Ethno programs, created mostly on the basis of the Contemporary ROM

board PCM samples. With kind permission from company Kurzweil, a selection of the original Kurzweil K2xxx ROM and FARM programs was included in sound banks contained in the above folders and is redistributed free of charge.

o Movie This sub-category includes a special collection of experimental and classical sound programs very well suited for film and theatrical music compositions. All programs in this category were created with a special emphasis on expressiveness and on creating further musical inspiration. This category also includes a separate FX folder which contains a large number of sound effect programs. With the aid of the preset controllers (Pitch Wheel, Modulation Wheel, Data Entry, Aftertouch, etc.) it is possible to create a broad spectrum of additional sound variations. As is the case with all other K:Works categories, the Movie sub-category contains a selection of original Kurzweil K2xxx ROM and FARM programs making them far easier to access and use.

• Drums & Percussion*

This category contains sound programs from single kick drums, snares and percussion to standard as well as synth drum kits and a large selection of experimental kits very suitable for all modern music styles (e.g. Techno, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Hip-Hop, EBM, Industrial, etc.). The majority of these sound programs use various DSP modulation functions available through individual V.A.S.T. algorithms (e.g. shaper, wrap, distortion, etc.) which are then typically passed through a range of frequency filters. It is possible to further adjust the DSP modulation parameters in real time with the aid of pre-assigned controllers, thus creating many interesting and very original sounding effects. As is the case with all other K:Works categories, the Drum and Percussion* category contains a selection of original Kurzweil K2xxx ROM and FARM programs making them far easier to access and use.

• Electro This category contains emulations of vintage Electric Pianos, Organs and Clavinets together with many other experimental Piano and Organ programs. Some of these programs offer a variety of tremolo and vibrato settings. It is recommended to use the pre-defined controllers to adjust each sound in real time. This category also contains a large collection of programs which utilize KB3 Mode (Drawbar Organs) used by Kurzweil K2500/K2600 and K2661 instruments. Included in this category also, are selected original Kurzweil ROM and FARM programs (e.g. Clavinets, Electric Pianos and Organs including basic KB3 Organs) re-categorized and reordered to make them far easier to access and use.

Note

Those Kurzweil K2500 users, who do not have KB3 Mode installed on their instrument, can download the KB3 Mode firmware free of charge from the download section of http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com website. It is recommended that you save all your user programs before you attempt to install the KB3 Mode firmware. Please ensure you follow the operating system installation instruction provided by Kurzweil.

• Extreme

This category contains sound programs which are very well suited for electronic underground music styles (e.g. Industrial, EBM, Dark Wave, Noise, etc.). Sound programs in this category draw on the full potential of V.A.S.T. algorithms, their digital oscillators and DSP units (e.g. shaper, wrap, amplitude modulation, distortion, frequency filters, etc.) in conjunction with basic PCM samples. Using pre-assigned controllers (Modulation Wheel, Data Entry, Pitch Wheel, Aftertouch, etc.) it is possible to modulate the majority of the sound programs in this collection in real time, thus enabling you to achieve optimal outcomes. Due to the increased level of aliasing in a higher key range, we have introduced a keyboard limit under which these sound programs will operate. Before you become fully familiar with this collection, we would like to recommend that you first test these programs in the key range of A0 and C4 (C5). It is important to keep this increased aliasing in mind also while working with the sequencer and assign the relevant notes to the respective keys for the selected program. To further stimulate your creativity, we have included as part of this collection a small amount of Synth Bass programs with less aggressive sound variations. These can be used for basic bass riffs or in layers together with other sound programs.

*Note

(For K:Works “LE” users only.) Since K:Works “LE” and “EX” collections contain different sound programs and sound bank categorizations, some of the above descriptions do not entirely apply to the K:Works “LE” collection. These differences are most apparent for the categories: Orchestral, Drums &

Percussion and Workshop – Volume 5 which for example does not contain Ethno program folder. However the rest of the technical information and recommendations typically apply.

Product List In case you are an owner of a larger K:Works soundware collection we have compiled for you a complete list of K:Works soundware products for Kurzweil K2xx instruments. This list contains a basic description of each individual Volumes and Bundles offer together with their respective product codes. You will come across these product codes frequently, not only when ordering additional K:Works products but also while working with K:Works soundware you have already purchased. These codes (with the exception of K:Works Bundles) are used to identify individual folders on K:Works floppy disks and CDs. Before you become fully familiar with this K:Works naming convention, it may be easier for you to refer to the complete “Product List” document on your K:Works CD. An appendix of this document also contains relevant tables with individual K:Works folders names. Note

Detailed information and listing of individual K:Works soundware product categories, its folders and sound banks, is contained in the “Product Details” and “Sound Program List“ documents on your K:Works CD.
