AboutKupendafortheChildren

WhyWeExist:Inmanyareasoftheworld,peopleimpactedbydisabilityareviewedascursed,leadingtotheirneglect,abandonment,abuse,rape,andmurder.AccordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization“Abillionpeopleintheworld,15%ofthepopulation,haveadisabilitysevereenoughthatitlimitstheirparticipationinfamily,communityandpoliticallife.”

OurMission:EquippingchildrenwithdisabilitiestoachievetheirGod-givenpotentialthroughadvocacy,educationandmedicalintervention.

TheChildrenWeServe:Kupendaworkswithchildrenandyouthwhohavelong-termdisabilitiesincludingphysical,cognitive,sensory,andemotionalhealthissues.

WhereWeWork:OurworkisfocusedintheKilifiregionofKenyabutourmodelandmaterialsarealsobeingusedinpartsofTanzaniaandarerelevantforuseinalldevelopingnations.

OurProgramAreas

Advocacy:Whenpeoplelearnabouttheneedsofchildrenwithdisabilitiesandhowtheycanrespond--themajoritydo.Weinspirethisresponsebyorganizinglocally-ledpublicawarenessdaysandeducationalworkshopsforleaders,familiesandcommunities.Participantsinthesesessionsdevelopmoreloving,inclusiveattitudestowardchildrenwithdisabilities,whichofteninspiresthemtoprovidedirectassistance,suchaseducationaccessandmedicalintervention.Education:Accesstoschoolgiveschildrenwithdisabilitiestheopportunitytoreachtheirfullpotential–whetherthatmeansgoingtocollegeorsimplylearningtoholdacup.Wesupporteducationaccessbyprovidingschoolfees,constructingspecialneedseducationalfacilities,andhiringandtrainingcaretakersandspecialneedseducators.MedicalIntervention:Wepromotethehealthofchildrenwithdisabilitiesbyconnectingthemtomedicalcare,nutritionsupport,andtherapy(e.g.,speech,occupational,andphysiotherapy).Wealsoadvocateforreducedmedicalfees,providereferrals,constructmedicalfacilities,andsupportaccesstomedicalequipmentandcorrectivesurgeries.
