Fighting Patterns of Kuntao and Silat: Chinese Indonesian Combat Arts (Paperback) By Chris Derbaum and Justin Miller

Fighting Patterns of Kuntao and Silat (Authored by Chris Derbaum, Justin Miller) Brutal and Devastating Art of Kuntao and Silat. Fighting Patterns of Kuntao and Silat is a book based on a diagram which is sometimes referred to as Chinese hands and Indonesian feet. The footwork diagrams are a guide to numerous footwork patterns to put you in the right place at the right time for devastating leg strikes and takedowns which can also be used against multiple attackers. There are over 140 pages of footwork patterns alone in the book that serve as a “how to” guide so you can follow along and practice on your own. The book also includes the most basic footwork stances to more complicated takedowns in this devastating system. When the same diagram is turned upright all the explosive handwork and brutal knifework is also followed from this diagram. There is also a short history of Kuntao-Silat from China-Indonesia and some of the first teachers that brought these arts to the United States. Authors Chris Derbaum and Justin Miller both worked in the law enforcement field for over 35 years and have applied the

arts of Kuntao-Silat to numerous real life situations. - 208 pages Paperback $33.75

The FMA Informative has known Sifu/Guro Chris Derbaum for a few years and requested that he submit his journey that he recently did to Paris, France. The issue is very interesting for Chris though only originally doing a 2 day seminar which was held on April 16-17, 2016, had an experience from arrival to when Chris and his wife Karla departed France, spending a total of seven days. This is a historic event for representing Kuntao-Chinese/Indonesian Combat Arts, Chris brought his teacher’s art which is Willem Reeders Kuntao to Saint-Martin-du-Terde, France. One must realize that Penchak Silat was brought to France by Master Hardjono Turpijn and has been taught in France for a quite a while. Bringing Sifu/Guro Derbaum to France for this event brings about what are the differences and what can be learned. Well seems each learned from the other and a very prosperous event was the reward with the knowledge and skills demonstrated.Kuntao-Chinese/Indonesian Combat Arts that is taught by Sifu Chris Derbaum Sifu Chris has studied Kuntao for 25 years under the following Instruc-tors. Grandmaster Bob Servidio and Master Scott Young of Meadville School of Kung Fu Kune-Tao. Also under guidance Master Guy Savelli-World Kung Fu Federation (Kuntao) and Sifu Lenny Howie- Florida Kung Fu Federation (Kun-tao). Sifu Chris Derbaum has 25 years of experience as a Correctional Officer in the Prison Setting of the Concrete Jungle and has also applied the art of Kuntao in numerous real life situations. His expression of Willem Reeder’s Style is ex-tremely aggressive, brutal and was nicknamed named Prison Kuntao.

Want to thank my wife Karla Derbaum and photographer Chris Fischer from Germany for photographing my 2 day Kuntao Seminar. His website is: www.chris-photoshootings.com

Day One - Arriving in Paris, France

My host in France was David Taeib and his girlfriend Pauline Marlin.

Host David Taieb is a kickboxing and full contact competitor ranked 2nd in France in his weight class. He started boxing at 17 years old meeting famous Michel Gondoin, then well known Andre Zeitoun. Later, he practiced Silat with Gurus Charles Joussot and Franck Ropers for many years. As a member of Police Strike Team, David decided to get fully involved in self defense to cope with violence in street fight, that he met everyday and began studying Chinese Indone-sian and Filipino Martial Arts. He studied with Ray Dionaldo’s FCS Kali and Angelos Fasois CCCF System in Greece. Strong of this knowledge he decided to create a system called “TRIBAL DEFENSIF”. By testing and studying tech-

nical movements, they managed to build an Aggressive Self Defense, effective in street fighting. David also is the first to bring Guru Phil Norman Ghost Fighting and Sifu Chris Derbaum Kuntao into France.

The country of France has a proud history. France is also a very popular destination for many tourists who come to Europe. Many people come to see places such as the Eiffel Tower. Tourists also visit some of the more famous art museums as well. There are many chefs within the country who prepare French cuisine, which is known by some to be the best food in all of the world. However, many people do not know about how revered the French are in regards to martial arts. The French are known for practicing a variety of styles, including some that are indigenous and others that were imported. The art of Savate, which means “old shoe”, is an old and brutal street fighting kickboxing style that evolved on the street slums of Paris and the port of Marseille. Its practitioners wear shoes, and the kicks are only delivered with the feet, unlike other kickboxing styles where shin and knee strikes are permitted. The original style of Savate only used to use open hand strikes because the closed fist was considered a deadly use of force. Then at around the beginning of the 19th century, western boxing was infused with Savate to create the sport of Savate which is now used within the ring as well as in the street. Within the 20th century, other arts from the fareast made its way to France. The French love other cultures and have taken much interest in practicing these arts. Arts such as Okinawan Karate, Judo, Muay Thai, and Silat are very popular with the French citizens and law enforcement. Professor Charles Joussot taught many police and bouncers his brutal form of for protection in the mean streets of Paris. The French have strict rules governing the use of firearms, often leaving only few with permits to carry or for hunting reasons. Without the use of firearms, the French have really taken much interest in martial arts for self-defense reasons. One of the most popular martial arts that the French are known for is the sport of Judo. The French government has invested a lot in developing competitive Judokas to compete worldwide. In fact, the French are consistently ranked as the number two nation in the world in regard to judo. They also have several cham-pions, including one heavyweight champion Teddy Riner that has won 8 times and is a presence at 6 foot 8 inches 290lbs. The French, being known for the kickboxing style of Savate, have also made a presence within the world of kickboxing. Chris had a French Kickboxing Champion Jean Rene Vent attend the Kuntao Seminar. Through a mix of styles including Savate, Karate, and Muay Thai, they have produced a number of champion kickboxers that have competed worldwide successfully. Due to the availability of different martial arts and pop-ularity of mixed martial arts, the French cross train to become a more well-rounded practitioner. By Brad Guzzie

Hotel Louvre Rivoli I stayed with my wife Karla Derbaum at the Louvre Rivoli Hotel in Paris, France. I highly recom-mend this hotel because is nestled in quiet little street just steps from the Louvre Museum, Notre-Dame Cathedral and the historic Marais district. The location is perfect for exploring the center of Paris on foot. The area offers shopping facilities, as well as many restaurants, cafes and theatres. Website: paris-ho-tel-rivoli.com

The Eiffel Tower is a wrought iron lattice tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris. It is named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. It was constructed in 1889 as the entrance to the World’s Fair. The tower is the most visited paid monument in the world it is 1,063 ft tall, about the same height as an 81- story building, and is the second tallest structure in Paris. Its base is square, measuring 410 ft on each side. The tower has three levels for visitors, with restaurants on the first and second levels. The top level’s upper platform is 906 ft above the ground and the high-est observation deck accessible to the public in the European Union. The climb from ground level to the first level is over 300 steps, as is the climb from the first level to the second. Although there is a staircase

to the top level, it is usually only accessible by lift.Notre Dame Cathedral Is a medieval catholic cathedral located on the east-ern half of Paris, France. The cathedral is considered to be one of the finest French Gothic architectures and is among the largest and well-known buildings in the world. The cathedral was completed in 1345 and today it houses some important first-class relics including Crown of Thorns, True Cross and Holy Nails. During the 1790’s the church suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution and much of its reli-gious imagery was damaged or destroyed. An extensive restoration began in 1845 and a new project to continue the restoration began in 1991.Other Sites in Paris Basilique du Sacré-Cœur- is a Roman catholic church in Paris, France.Le mur des je t’aime, lit the I Love You Wall is a love-themed 40 square meters (430 sq ft) wall in the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, Paris, France. Fisfo Silat School in Paris

Honor to meet and demo my lineage of Kuntao at Head of Penchak Silat in France FISFO. Professor Charles Joussot is a deadly man. Want to thank David Taieb for introducing me to this Master of Masters. Charles is 70 years old but extremely fit and moves amazing while sharing his brutal form of Silat. He was one the best Masters I had ever seen move and has extremely talented students under him. Class was 8:30pm to 11:30 pm at night and truly devastating no-nonsense Street Silat!

This is how the style of Silat it was imported to France. France Master Hardjo-no Turpijn the first to pioneer Silat into Eu-rope. It was first based in the Netherlands. He unfortunately died in 1996 but left a huge imprint into France. The spelling “Penchak

Silat” is now trademarked by Charles Joussot, one of the people who developed the Pencak Silat in France. He is the founder and designer of FISFO - Federal International System Security Forces. Master Hardjo-no Turpijn was a pupil of several great masters Indo-nesians, including Hamid Oetomo (which is originally the Setia Hati Terate style, and a student of the founder of the style Persaudaraan Setia), of a certain B.P Jeje (master of Kodok style ‘frog’), bapak Tönjes and Flor Guru, and others still. Guru Turpijn so learned various styles of Pencak ‘Penchak”Silat, throughout his train-ing. Then his life was eventful. He lived for thirteen years in the Indonesian jungle in a sort of monastery. There he became a disciple of two great masters of Penchak Silat, Bapak Tjorkro and Bapak Djamaed. It will study the science of Ilmu Batin (Tenga Dalem), it is a work on energy and internal strength and a study on spiritual philosophy. The story goes during these studies Pah Turpijn should remain discreet and could not have contacts with the outside world, nor even with his own family. At the end of his teaching, he left the monastery, to enlist in the army. He was part of the suicide commandos “the supporters Siliwangi” operat-ing in the jungle during the invasion. The men of the commando were grouped by three or five and rushed on a group of enemies as rampag-ing Tigers. It was necessary to kill quickly and well, using twists of cervical vertebrae or PIN sharp and poisoned attached to rings. Suffice to say for master Hardjono Turpijn , Penchak Silat has never been an acrobatic gymnastics, but indeed a pure and hard martial art which was to be effective. Guru Turpijn therefore introduces Penchak Silat in Europe, from the Netherlands, in the

years sixties through the Setia Hati Terate School. Arriving in Europe, Guru Turpijn already had his own vision of Penchak Silat. His ‘style’ was greatly influenced by the schools of West Java. His personal experiences in the jungle, his experiences, his training in various schools of Penchak Silat, all this has helped Guru Turpijn develop a personal approach of Penchak Silat. It is quite naturally, that it has in Europe, his vi-sion of Penchak Silat, practice of combat, jurus, langh-kas, coming out of the official framework of the school Setia Hati Terate. His personal experiences in the jun-gle, his experiences, his training in various schools of Penchak Silat, all this has helped Guru Turpijn develop a personal approach of Penchak Silat. It is quite natu-rally, that it has in Europe, his vision of Penchak Silat, practice of combat, jurus, langhkas, coming out of the official framework of the school Setia Hati Terate.Guru Turpijn adapts Penchak Silat to the the Europeans It is from this moment that creates the ‘break’ between him and the official representatives of the Se-tia Hati Terate in Indonesia school. Break in the level of official representation, because the reputation of Guru Turpijn is so important that masters Indonesians leave him the freedom to create his own style and rec-ognize him as a very great master. The problem is that the past of Guru Turpijn is embarrassing for the new Government and the new official instances of Penchak Silat in Indonesia and in the world. It is as well as the ‘official’ Penchak Silat in Indonesia and in the world, minimizes the role played by Guru Turpijn, the devel-opment of Penchak Silat. Guru Turpijn creates his own style which he called Persaudaraan Setia-Hati-Madiun. In the years 60/70, the style is divided into 4 branch-

es: Persaudaraan Setia Hati (traditional form very close to the original school), Persaudaraan Setia Hati Terate (personal version of the Setia Hati Terate style), Persaudaraan Setia Hati Organisassi (association) and Persaudaraan Setia Hati Madiun (personal style). Basically, it was 4 visions of Penchak Silat, with the same technical basis for all. He changed the langhkas, incorporating elements from other schools of Penchak Silat, devel-oping all over the real effectiveness. In creating his school, Guru Turpijn be cut permanently official organizations of Pen-chak Silat in Indonesia and in the world Master Hardjono Turpijn

then. He created a fed-eration in the Nether-lands, parrallement to the official federation implemented. However, Guru Turpijn through his school, wanted that each teacher teach-es his own vision of Penchak Silat, at the level of actual combat. He asked all to work and keep tradition-al forms he taught,

with the possibility of modifying them. But never let the traditional aspect aside and back to the source to progress in real combat. In France, it is Charles Jous-sot which becomes its representative. “Many people have never “really” learned and studied the Penchak as I did in Indonesia.’’ Today’s generation has never felt the sensations that I experienced and this fact, the real fight in the jungle, jungle combat, will probably dis-appear when I die. » Master Hardjono Turpijn. Pencak Silat, of Indonesian origin, was imported to Europe by Master Turpijn. Charles Joussot Convinced of the efficiency of this discipline demand Turpijn Master to teach him the art and becomes the sole representative in France Pencak Silat. The latter will adapt technolo-gy to our society and become the worldwide reference Charles Joussot

Day ThreeLouvre The Louvre, originally a royal palace but now the world’s most fa-mous museum, is a must-visit for anyone with a slight interest in art. Some of the museum’s most celebrated works of art include the Mona Lisa and the Venus of Milo. The Louvre Museum is one of the largest and most important museums in the world. It is housed in the expansive Louvre Palace, situated in the 1st arrondissement, at the heart of Paris. The collection of the Louvre Museum was first established in the sixteenth century as the private collection of King Francis I. One of the works of art he purchased was the now famous Mona Lisa painting. The collec-tion grew steadily thanks to donations and purchases by the kings. In 1793, during the French Revolution, the Louvre became a national art museum and the private royal collection opened to the public. The museum has a collection of over one million works of art, of which about 35,000 are on display, spread out over three wings of the former palace. The museum has a diverse collection ranging from the Antiquity up to the mid-nineteenth century. Some of the most famous works of art in the museum are the Venus of Milo, the Nike of Samothrake, the Dying Slave by Michelangelo and of course Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

The Art of Kuntao

The Art of Kuntao comes from the once closed door and highly secretive style of Grandmaster Wil-lem Reeder’s (Grandmaster Reeder’s proved his Art in combat while serving in two fronts in Indonesia during WW2). Willem Reeders was of mixed heritage, being of Dutch and Chinese blood, but raised in Indonesia. He received training in a variety of martial arts, no one knows how many exactly. His primary teacher was his great uncle Liu Seong, whose title he bore. His uncle taught him his family’s System of Kuntao, a sophisticated form

of fighting which focuses on close range technique. The Family Art of Kuntao was from Macau, China and made its way to Indonesia then America. Master Reeders was the first to bring Kuntao to America in 1960. For the first time American saw how deadly Kuntao was first hand. The original group Grandmaster Willem Reed-ers was a small group that practiced in garage in Erie Pennsylvania.Sifu Chris Derbaum’s Teachers Sifu Chris Derbaum has been involved in Martial Art of Kuntao for 25+ years under the following Instructors. Sifu Lenny Howie-Florida Kung Fu Federa-tion (Kuntao). Master Guy Savelli-World Kung Fu Federation (Kuntao). Grandmas-ter Bob Servidio and Master Scott Young of Meadville School of Kung Fu Kune-Tao. Sifu Chris current mentor/teacher now is Master Scott Young and has over 50+ years in KuneTao as well as Law Enforcement. Sifu Chris art is also highly influenced with his 25+ years of experience as a Deputy at Lee County Jail and as a Corrections Officer in the Florida State Prison. In the Concrete Jungle he has applied the art of Kuntao in numerous real life situations same as his current men-tor Master Scott Young. His expression of Willem Reeders’s Style is extremely aggressive, brutal and was nicknamed Prison Kuntao. The Martial Art of Kuntao is extremely explosive and ballistic in its movements that are done at lightning speed with crushing power. The whole body is behind every movement to have maximum impact on the target area. Kuntao is not a sport but more about self-preservation. Kuntao Combat Arts has 2 other certified schools in USA under Sifu Der-baum. Sifu Justin Miller is a branch instructor in Kuntao studying the art since 2002 is a Deputy working for the Lee County Sheriff. Sifu Carlos Serrano is also a branch instructor in Kuntao studying the art since 2002 and is Sergeant in United States Army. Chris has also has taught in U.S.A and overseas giving seminars to people who want to enhanced their martial arts knowledge. Sifu Chris Derbaum has multiple study groups thorough United States and 2 Global locations at this time in Singapore (Reza Emmanual) and France. David Taieb is an Apprentice Instructor in Kuntao and will be my representing Kuntao Combat Arts in France. If anyone has questions about Kuntao in France please contact him.
