South Africa: AN INSPIRATION FOR ALL By Pritam Hari Kaur Khalsa

SOUTH AFRICA IS A COUNTRY WITH

MANY FACETS AND CHALLENGES.

It has traits of first and third worldeconomies that influence each otherand are still in a great process of har-monizing with each other.

Yogi Bhajan sent my husband HarBhajan Singh here in 1985, or actual-ly I should say, ‘returned’ him, posthaste, to the country of his birth.Twoyears later he engaged us and askedme to teach here. I relocated frommy ashram life in Germany. Theseearly days were interesting times –the last tense years before thedemise of Apartheid. I remember onenewspaper would have big emptyspaces as a visual protest stating thatcontent had been censored in thisso-called “state of emergency.” Theatmosphere was a bit heavy. HarBhajan had started a natural foodsstore in the economic capital, theCity of Gold, Johannesburg. It wascalled Fruits & Roots – and wemerrily taught our few yoga classesand offered early morning Sadhana. After all, ‘when things are down anddarkest’ what better thing to do thanshare techniques and products that

lift our energy. We have a son, HariBhajan Singh, who graduated fromMiri Piri Academy last year (picturedon the next page doing a gatkademonstration).

Two decades later, I bow my headto the energy and dedication of themany incredible Kundalini Yoga prac-titioners and teachers in SouthAfrica. Somehow, in this ‘new’ SouthAfrica,Aquarian beings honor the callfrom the heart by serving and bene-fiting their communities!

In Cape Town we have MahaMataji Atma Kaur who recentlymoved to Barrydale in the KleinKaroo (a semi-desert area towardsthe interior) opening her yogicretreat centre, Little Samadhi. InCape Town, Anton Casciati runsGuru Ram Das Studio, a healingcentre where students of Yogi Pranaand psychologist Linda Kantor/SiriAtma Kaur, take classes. And it isalways a good place for Sadhana fol-lowed by breakfast. George Goldingcreated a website that enables mem-bers of the public to bypass organi-zations and directly support a causeor individual. Dorly Viollier/Siri RamKaur holds Kundalini Yoga forMenopause classes from her exqui-site studio in up-market Camps Bay.She also serves lungar to the home-less. Deirdre Rhodes/Patwant Kaurteaches KY and drama classes towomen in an inner city museum. Sat

Siri Singh, a webmaster by trade, teaches beginners’ classes.

Jai Jagdeesh Kaur, founder of St.Joseph 's (an award winning commu-nity project) is a journalist and film-maker, who consistently featuresKundalini Yoga in her work. StJoseph's (www.stjosephsaep.co.za)has various yoga outreach projects intownships and at St. Joseph's, includ-ing retreats in Betty’s Bay, work inthe prisons and in the maximumforensic unit at the state mental hos-pital. Jai Jagdeesh created BeautifulAs Butterflies—a documentary inwhich she charts the healing journeythrough Kundalini Yoga of fourwomen from previously abused back-grounds. As a free-lance journalist, she always infiltrates mainstreampublications with essays on KundaliniYoga!

Brad Baard, currently in theteacher training program, is an eventsorganizer, working on the flavor ofthe day: smoke-free, drug-free, bigopen air Aquarian dance parties. MSSGurujot Singh from Herndon,Virginia, often visits Cape Town onbusiness, and we hope one of thesedays he and his wife, Gurumeet Kaur, will make a more permanent homefor themselves there.

In Durban, architect and teacherBruce van Dongen/Nihal Singh isbuilding a fantastic retreat centrecalled Sattva Anjali in an urban

nature reserve overgrownwith indigenous forest.Barbara Leiman/SatwantKaur teaches KY and givesesoteric astrological read-ings.

Up here, in Johannes-burg, Coco van Oppens/Didar Kaur teaches chil-dren’s yoga and teachertraining and she is cur-rently working on a seed-money-sponsored docu-mentary about theEuropean Yoga Festival. Ravi Kaur isthe mother of Atma Singh who com-pletes his schooling at Miri PiriAcademy this year – and the motherof little Sat Nam Kaur. She conductsone-on-one sessions, retreats and isstudying for a degree specificallyaimed at counseling people withHIV/AIDS. Her husband is an award-winning documentary film maker. Both were part of the political resist-ance during the years of Apartheid.Devi Kaur donates community timeto a home for young girls who weretrafficked children who were rescuedfrom being sex workers. KarinGeldenhuys / Balwant Kaur created ayoga centre – SHAKTI KHAYA - ontop of one of the many rocky ridgesthat intersect the city of

Johannesburg but she plans to sell itafter a recent armed robbery andbecause she spends more and moretime in India now. JaneSonnenberg/Patwant Kaur is theimpactful and dedicated Sat NamRasayan healer and family constella-tion therapist. She hosts GurudevSingh when he comes here to teachSat Nam Rasayan. Siri Dharma Kauris a lawyer and her service is throughplaying music, teaching at a drugrehab centre together with BabaKaur/ Dr. Delia Robertson as well asat an AIDS orphanage. SamanthaSkyring/Karta Kaur reaches out toblack rural children through drum-ming and yoga; her project is called20000 DRUMS.

Simran Kaur and Hari Singh/JabuMashinini, both trained mediators aswell as Kundalini Yoga teachers, teachnon-violent communication (a làMarshal Rosenberg) in black town-ship schools. Dena/Liv Avtar Kaurtook the encouragement to find aseva project to heart and, in recordtime found an orphanage in the blacktownship of Alexandra where shenow teaches. Har Bhajan Singh finallycreated a class in Soweto, the large

African township in theSouth of Johannesburg. So on and on goes the

list of these stellar, dedi-cated human beings. Thegrowth of consciousnessin South Africa, it seems, isalways a process of reach-ing out to people in need. With a 40% unemploy-ment rate, every workingperson has spheres ofinfluence like a stonedropped into a still

pond, which support many membersof their extended families. Despitethe well-known and not pretty crimestatistics, we love the directness andvibrancy of Africa and serve theGuru’s plans here. With the demiseof Apartheid, more and more IndianSikhs come to live and work hereand as of last year, Johannesburg hasa beautiful and lively Gurdwara.

In addition to our two compa-nies, Fruits & Roots ( www.fruit-sandroots.co.za) and Earth Pro-ducts (www.earthproducts.co.za)and teaching and training, we arehosting and co-teaching two level IITeacher Training Courses here in thisnext month: Conscious Communicationand Authentic Relationships.

Back in the eighties, the Siri SinghSahib wanted us to hold WinterSolstice here – this would be theheight of the Southern summer! Wehave been given a date for our sec-ond White Tantric Yoga Course – May31, 2008, in Cape Town – and weinvite you cordially to share with usand bring your special energy here!

Yogi Bhajan first taught The Diagnostic MuscleMeasurement System (DMMS) to the members of theKhalsa Chiropractic Association (KCA) in October 1984.Of the many different techniques Yogi Bhajan introducedto KCA, this is the primary method that stuck with methroughout my career as a chiropractor. In the beginning,I used DMMS only with particular clients whose situationwarranted this intensive modality. More recently, I havebegun to use this technique with the majority of mypatients, because the diagnostic system has been so effec-tive.

The purpose of this techniqueis clearly unique.Yogi Bhajan taughtthe chiropractors that this treat-ment method would eliminate allanger from our patient’s past lives, current life as well as any anger thepatient was presently experienc-ing. That perspective left a deepimpression on my psyche. Afterreturning from the October 1984weekend with Yogi Bhajan, I enthusiastically started usingthe Diagnostic Muscle Measurement System on mypatients. As life would have it, not every patient was asenthusiastic as I was.The methodology was time consum-ing and painful to the patient. I had a busy practice andlots of overhead that had to be paid every month. Howcould I integrate this system into my practice? The choicewas obvious, though not easy. Over the years I had to bevery selective in determining which patients were ready, willing and able to follow the treatment determined bythe Diagnostic Muscle Measurement System. Initially mostof these patients had been in car accidents, slept wrongand ended up with severe neck or back pain, or hadinjured themselves in some physical activity (e.g., sports, gardening) and wanted pain relief. Typical patients couldeither stoically handle the pain of the treatment or theywere so desperate for healing that they did not mind tem-porary discomfort. Eventually the ardent new age patient

doing yoga or a spiritual practice became the mainstay ofmy explorations into The Diagnostic MuscleMeasurement System, and I have them to thank for show-ing me the power of this treatment modality.

One of the beneficiaries of my growing knowledge wasa young boy around the age of eight. His case has been thelight burning for the last 23 years in my healing practice. This child had a unique disease that caused 100% blind-ness by the age of nine. There was only one place inAmerica that could diagnose these children, and that was

in Boston, Massachusetts. He hadbeen there several times, alwaysreceiving the same prognosis: yourson will be blind by the age of nine. His parents brought him to mewith a prayer that just maybe hisdoctors were not aware of all thepossible procedures that couldhelp their son. I began to see theboy about every two weeks andusing The Diagnostic Muscle

Measurement System, I determined his course of treat-ment: a daily dose of carrot juice and spending more timewith his father. The family followed the treatment plan 50-70% at best over the course of a year, even though theyhad little or no hope of any change occurring. I remainedpositive about the technique, mostly due to the love andtrust I had for Yogi Bhajan; after all, the practice ofKundalini Yoga had totally changed my life.

After the boy’s mother took her son to Boston for hisannual visit one year later, she called my office, out ofbreath, weeping, and barely able to articulate her story. On the way to the airport her son asked what he wasseeing in the air. After much time questioning her son, sherealized that for the first time in his life her son had seenan airplane. This boy literally wore coke-bottle-thick glass-es and was supposed to be blind by now. In Boston, thedoctor confirmed that her son was not going blind, and infact his eyesight had improved. He was the only child to

The Diagnostic Muscle Measurement Systemas taught by Yogi Bhajan to the Khalsa Chiropractic Association,

October 1984 By Dr. Guruchander Singh Khalsa, D.C.

The purpose of this technique is clearlyunique. Yogi Bhajan taught thechiropractors that this treatment

method would eliminate all anger fromour patient’s past lives, current lifeas well as any anger the patient

was presently experiencing.

reverse this incurable disease. The mother shared withthe doctor my protocols that her son had been following, and the doctor wrote “faith cure” in his medical records.

Since that day I knew I had a jewel in this technique, and I know it is a priceless gift to Humanity. I have usedDMMS for years in my own practice, and when theDirector of IKYTA asked me to write an article about YogiBhajan’s healing techniques, I jumped at the chance toshare my experience with a larger audience. It is my sin-cere prayer and hope that the KCA and its members canshare Yogi Bhajan’s inestimable gifts in seminars, books, and other creative ways. Yogi Bhajan always told us thatwe were too unaware of what he had given us and thatthese techniques were meant for the future generationsof healers in the Age of Aquarius. I encourage each andevery person reading this article to get the treatments, buy the books, and attend the seminars. Please tune intothe healing magnificence of Yogi Bhajan’s techniques andshare them with all of Humanity.

You never know what God has up his sleeve for you...

When I took my first Kundalini Yoga class in Montreal 25years ago, I never thought for one second that I wouldhave the blessing to care for and clean Guru Ram DasEstate—the last residence the Yogi Bhajan built inEspañola.

In my early days in 3HO I was quickly becameinvolved with doing “seva” which for me is one of themore rewarding things one can do for one’s soul. It does-n’t give wealth, recognition or congratulations; rather it’sa subtle thing where I feel at peace with my inner self, aform of contentment and containment.

I began doing this seva in Yogi Bhajan’s kitchen in LosAngeles and also cleaning his private room. First I learnedhow everything was so well organized and he give me thedirections of exactly how he wanted the routine done. This gave me the base for understanding how to do theEstate later. When I moved to Española, I had approxi-mately the same routine, serving in the kitchen and clean-ing his Dome once or twice a week until he put me incharge of Guru Ram Das Estate.

Talking about cleaning, scrubbing, dusting and polishingon one hand is not very fascinating and glamorous, butwhen it comes to a sacred space, to the space of theMaster it is a different story, a very different dimension infact. Automatically I approached everything with a greatrespect, I was a little afraid of accidently breaking some-thing, and of course I wanted to do the best job possible.I really felt that I was entering a space that approachedheaven itself.

Remembering this seva, so many feelings come to themind. Mentally, I always sang a mantra during the processof cleaning, and the work became an automatic medita-tion.At the same time there was a little fight going on inmy mind. One part was very positive and another partnegative. My ego would come in and want to be part ofthe game. But then peace would come and joy wouldreplace the fight. After that the real deeper dimensionbegan and I would feel very, very blessed. I felt the ele-vated vibration in his space, in every corner of the room,in every object, each thing I touched felt precious andsacred.

As I dusted, cleaned and polished the room and thetrinkets, I meditated ever more deeply. My chantingwould put out love and good vibrations. I understoodthat I was actually cleaning my own mental dust. I tookout the spider webs I had in my mind. I cleared away thepiles of my past. I scrubbed away my own negativity. I pol-ished my own heart and soul and I understood that thebest of me could shine to put even more love into hisspace.

Most of the trinkets are gifts from students, friends andvisitors. From the simplest drawing to the most expensivesculpture, all were given out of love, recognition, and deepgratitude to him. Yogi Bhajan always said that each gift hereceived was to be placed on his altar. He always prayed overeach one and blessed the giver before he would place the giftsomewhere in his house or in the archives.

I always wanted the Master to feel comfortable. I wantedhim to be able to relax in his environments and feel that every-thing was fresh, clear and clean. Because of his subtle sensitiv-ity, it was my job to make everything “spic and span” withoutusing any strong chemical cleaners. My best reward was whenhe walked into the room and just stopped for a second appre-ciating the environment with a subtle nod of his head.

When Yogi Bhajan put me in charge of the Estate, I had thesame approach as with the Dome, and even today I cleanexactly the same way despite the fact that he is no longerphysically present. I feel his vibration in every room and Ialways keep in mind that is a very sacred space; the spacewhere he lived, the space of the Estate of Guru Ram Das.

Two different members of his staff once told me,that toclean Yogi Bhajan’s home was like cleaning his skin. What ablessing! I am always touched when a visitor comes to theEstate and says that it feels as though the Siri Singh Sahibcould walk in the door at any moment and feel right athome.

A few months after I took over being in charge of theEstate seva, it was Tantric time. White Tantric is one of myfavorite things to do, and I was a little worried because dur-ing all these months my yoga practice had been reduced tothe barest minimum. I was thinking that, because of my lackof yoga practice, I would be stiff and uncomfortable duringthe three days of Tantric Yoga.To my great surprise it was justthe opposite. I was even more supple and tougher than usual. It was then that I realized just how deep the blessings andbenefits were from simply serving the Master in a humblemanner. One day when I was cleaning his altar in Los Angeleshe came to the room and said,“Great! Keep up! I did this formy Master.”

All I can say is that to be able to serve in this humble wayhas been a huge blessing from God, Guru and Yogi Bhajan. Iam so grateful.

"The time has come for us to help each

other in simple ways; reach

people for their betterment. It requires

your depth and compassion.

As there is sensual and sexual

intercourse, there is also

communicative intercourse, and

intercourse where you vibrate

compassion constantly and consistently.

People see and feel it. They believe

you and trust you. That level of love is

multifaceted and creative. When you

deal with people compassionately,

people may turn their backs on you,

but you will remain positive and

compassionate. If unfortunate things

occur, your compassion, the reality,

will be there, giving a sense of touch

through words, sight,

and existence that will heal."

A Tribute to BabajiThe love of the student By Gurprasad Kaur Khalsa

This morning it’s only gratitude I feel.Gratitude for the journey and grati-tude for reaching an age where I canlook back and appreciate everything:the smooth sailing, the slips, the falls, the detours, everything eventuallyleading back Home; and I feel somuch gratitude for you, Babaji.

MY FIRST TEACHERHow unlikely it all seems to me now, thinking about how I showed up onyour doorstep in San Angel, a dis-placed refugee of the 1985 earth-quake in Mexico City, a bit of a lostsoul.

We lived downstairs; all the yogisthat worked in your yoghurt and gra-nola factory, and me. I would see you, occasionally, passing through, on yourway upstairs, a different world alto-gether. Your stature was mythical.“Babaji says”, “Babaji does” prefacedso much of what I heard in thoseearly days. But you didn’t seem tosee me, or so I thought, and I kept mydistance, silently observing, silentlywaiting.

And then one day, magically, thedoor opened and I was summonedupstairs. You turned those dancingbright eyes on me, merry pranksterthat you were, and I was in. I was lec-tured, teased, cajoled, and ultimatelymentored by you as you guided meon the arduous, treacherous, some-times heartbreaking and always life-changing process that is walking thespiritual path. You watched me rise,

you picked me up when I crashed, you played with me and finally youconfronted me.

One day you said to me, “Whydon’t you just put on the turban andmake the commitment. You’ve nevercommitted yourself to anything inyour life, do it now.” I did it, Babaji, and the Universe moved fast. Thenext day I lost my job. You didn’tmention that anti-clerical law left-over from the days of the MexicanRevolution. That was only the begin-ning of my karma with the turban!

I sat in your yoga classes and lis-tened to your elegant and refinedSpanish, wishing I understood moreof it, watching your students—young, old, grandmothers and disaffectedyouth, all equally captivated by yourpresence, the wisdom you offered, the mastery that you held. You woveyour spell and offered your wit andtremendous insight to all who camewithin your mighty aura.

The night that I read from yourtranslation of the first volume of theSiri Guru Granth Sahib, during ourfirst mini-Akhand Paath, my heart wascatapulted open and captured forev-er by the beauty and majesty of itsvibration. You leave us the entiretranslation: this most magnificentcontribution to Sikh Dharma.

Those of us who knew you,Babaji, were all deeply moved by whoyou were. There were those whowere moved to be in opposition toyou, as inevitably befalls a leader, especially one who poked and pro-

voked as you did. Ever controver-sial—you had as many enemies asfriends. Nobody could be unaffectedby you. You made an impact, and itwas elevating.

How many times did you defydeath, beating it back with your tena-cious will? You fought a fierce foe, claiming victory again and again, untilthe end. A true warrior—GuruGobind Singh’s own son.

Dear Babaji, I am eternallygrateful to you.Your legacy lives on.Your light burns brightly. Rest easy, Great Soul, your work is done.

KUNDALINI YOGA MEDITATION • KUNDALINI YOGA MEDITATION

• NAADI CLEANSING — “U” BREATHING •ORIGINALLY TAUGHT BY YOGI BHAJAN IN 1969

REPRINTED FROM THE AQUARIAN TEACHER LEVEL I MANUAL

POSTURE: Sit in Easy Pose or Lotus Pose with a straight spine. When practicing thispranayam, be sure you have an empty stomach or have eaten very lightly.

MUDRA: Use the right hand to regulate the flow of breath through the nostrils. Block theright nostril with the thumb tip and the left nostril with the index finger. The index andthumb form the "U."

EYE POSITION: Fix the eyelids l/IOth open and gently roll the eyes upward slightly toenhance your mental focus. Concentrate through the Brow Point. Relax the eyelids sothey do not flutter.

BREATH PATTERN: The ratio for the length of breathing is 1 (inhale): 4 (hold): 2 (exhale).Create the following breathing pattern:

Inhale through the left nostril. (1)Hold the breath in. (4)Exhale through the right nostril. (2)

Inhale through the right nostril. (1)Hold the breath in. (4)Exhale through the left nostril. (2)

MANTRA: This breath can be done without mantra. But rather than just counting the rhythm or the sound ofthe breath, mantra helps to maintain the rhythm and adds subtle benefits. You can use the Bij Mantra: SatNaam or the Gur Mantra: Wha-hay Guroo. For example, on the inhale, repeat Sat Naam 8 times. Hold asyou vibrate, Sat Naam 32 times. Then as you exhale, repeat Sat Naam 16 times. Or you can use SA TANA MA inhaling to I cycle, holding for 4 cycles, exhaling for 2 cycles.

VISUALIZATION: In addition to the breath ratio and the mantra, you can visualize the path of prana. Inhale and visu-alize light flowing down the side of the spine to it’s base, on the same side as the breath-in nostril. As you hold thebreath in, feel and see the light swirling and growing, with increasing heat, in a cauldron at the base of the spineunder the Navel Point. As you exhale, see the light travel up the other side of the spine, out the nostril to the Infinite.

TIME: Continue for 15-62 minutes.

TO END: Sit in a deep meditation for a few minutes.

COMMENTS: This technique was given by Yogi Bhajan in an intensive training in 1969. It is a classical technique, which is referred to in the Gheranda Samhita as a "perfect cleanser." Yogi Bhajan explained that this is a purifyingpractice which, if done as a regular sadhana, "burns the karmas" of many lives. The karmas are coded in the struc-ture of the aura, the flow patterns of the subtle naadis, and in the deep structure of the mental body. This breathcreates a powerful neutral balance of prana and apana in the system and encourages the flow of kundalini into thecentral channel of the spine, the sushmuna. Every serious student should spend some time perfecting the benefitsof this kriya.

30 DAY DIETIf you are eager to begin immediately to bring about an

instant improvement in your general health, try a special

diet of eating only fruits, nuts and vegetables (cooked or

raw) for 30 days. This diet is used in India when the per-

son looks old, the body is wearing out and becomes impo-

tent. It is said to cleanse the system and revitalize the

body. The first few days you may feel weak, but then grad-

ually your strength will increase and you will start to feel

light and happy. After 30 days milk products are to be

eaten. The best season for this diet is the summer, spring

and fall, when the weather is warm and these foods are

available fresh. It is a build-up diet to make the transition

into an ideal diet.Yogi Bhajan gave this diet to his students

in the U.S. back in 1969. It was the first Kundalini Yoga diet

in this country.

MUNG BEANS AND RICEThis is a good cleansing diet, is good for the kidneys and

helps higher meditation. Mung beans are an easily assimi-

lated protein. This diet will work on the colon and the

digestive organs. It is beneficial in cases of constipation. For

30 days eat only mung beans and rice at mealtimes with

lots of green vegetables cooked into the same dish. Fruits

may be eaten between meals whenever desired and Yogi

tea may be taken. This is a good winter diet and is recom-

mended for people over 40.

Sat Nam beloved community,There's some exciting news fromVancouver, Canada that we would liketo share with 3HO worldwide In therain forest of Beautiful BritishColumbia, a Sister Land to Ram DasPuri has been born!!

As some of you may know, for thepast 15 years the Vancouver Sangat hasbeen holding Khalsa Ladies Camp. Thisannual gathering has grown into a pow-erful transformational experience forwomen, attracting more and morewomen—150 last year alone! For thepast two years there has also been aKhalsa Mens’ Camp, giving the men aprofound experience of Khalsa brother-hood. Previously, we rented land to holdour camps, but we have held a constantprayer that we would one day own landwe could devote to holding our camps.

Well, that day has come, and soonerthan anticipated! The Guru has heardour prayers, and manifested our vision. We have recently been supported in thepurchase of a beautiful 10-acre parcel ofland on the Sunshine Coast of BritishColumbia which we can now use tohost camps and many other events. From our experiences at Ram Das Puri,we all know the transformative powerthat emerges when the vibration ofGuru Ram Das merges with and is sup-ported by the healing powers of MotherNature. We are so grateful and excitedto serve and support the developmentof this place, in the name of serving con-sciousness as we move forward into theAquarian Age.

Our prayer is that this sacred homewill become YOUR sacred home. Weinvite you to join us as we make historyand begin this summer with our first

camps on the property. It will be ayear to remember as we worktogether to listen to the land andbless the manifestation of thevision. This year’s camps will have adifferent feel than years past. It isan experience of a lifetime and anopportunity to create our futuretogether.

The property is a ferry rideaway from Vancouver. It has beenin the care of the Coast SalishPeople for many years. The land-scape that has already been creat-ed is perfect for a camp-style envi-ronment with many cozy andsacred spaces for tents, cabindwellings and cleared areas for akitchen, outdoor activities, teach-ing space and Sacred GurdwaraSpace.

We look forward to develop-ing the property in a sustainablemanner—working in harmonywith Mother Nature. Perhaps partof Men's Camp will involve build-ing some services together.?...(Come on, guys!) Khalsa LadiesCamp this year will certainly be seedingthe future with the power of prayer andthe presence of laughter and joy! And intrue Vancouver tradition with lots ofsacred music! We are also projecting tohave youth camps here in the future.

We invite you to feel the destiny ofthis sacred land in your heart. Wehope that you too feel the call and willjoin us this summer in developing afoundation for what is sure to be aplace of love, healing and service to allhumanity, blessed by the touch of GuruRam Das, and the chardi kala of GuruGobind Singh!
