History

ThecityofKuduswassomethingofanimportantIslamicholycityinthesixteenthcentury.ItistheonlyplaceinJavathathaspermanentlyacquiredanArabicname('alQuds',Jerusalem).SunanKudus,oneofthenineWaliSanga,wassaidtohavebeenthefifthimam(head)ofthemosqueofDemakandamajorleaderofthe1527campaignagainst'Majapahit',beforemovingtoKudus.

TheMosqueofKudus(MasjidMenara)whichdatesfromthisperiod,remainsalocallandmarktothisday.ItisnotableforbothitsperseveranceofpreIslamicarchitecturalformssuchasOldJavanesesplitdoorwaysandHinduBuddhistinfluencedMajapahitstylebrickwork,[1]andforitsnamealManaroralAqsa.ThedateAH956(AD1549)isinscribedoverthemihrab(nicheindicatingthedirectionofMecca).[2]
