Introduction

The world is consuming 19,090 TW of

electrical energy at present with a

population of 7.071 billion.

By 2050 the population will reach 10

billion and people will require at least

36,000 – 82,000 TW of electrical

energy.

Alternators

Section 3

Alternators are the machines

which convert mechanical

energy into electrical energy.

The mechanical energy input to

the alternators is obtained from

turbines.

Power Generation

Alternators are coupled

to turbines which

converts heat energy

into mechanical energy.

Each plant consists of

several alternator units

for the generation of

power.

Power Transmission

Section 4

The power generated in the

generating units is transmitted

with the help of transmission

lines.

Before transmitting the power

the Voltage level is increased

with the help of transformers

Conclusion

Section 5

Advantages

It can be installed at any place irrespective

of the existence of coal.

It requires less space as compared to Hydro

power plants.

The fuel used is quite cheap.

Disadvantages

It pollutes the atmosphere due to production

of large amount of smoke & fumes.
