WINTER SPORTING COMMENTARY
On Monday 1st October, teams from Year 5 and 6 from across the partnership came to Kingsbury to take part in the School Games Level 2 Mixed Football competition. It was a well-contested event, with all teams showing determination and passion to be successful. Court Farm Primary School were the eventual winners and will go forward to the Birmingham Level 3 Primary School Games.
The following day, it was the Year 3 and 4’s turn! The games were tense, and hard fought with everyone showing great teamwork and belief that they could win. St Mary and St John Primary School were victorious in the end and will join Court Farm at the Birmingham Level 3 School Games event.
MIXED FOOTBALLDuring January, Year 5 and 6 pupils attended the Level 2 Kingsbury SportsHall Athletics cluster events. Pupils took part in long jump, triple jump, javelin, chest pass, speed bounce and a range of exciting track and running events. There was a fantastic atmosphere at each of the venues, and the pupils all aspired to do their very best to win their events. The winners at each of the 3 clusters were - St Barnabas CE Primary at Kingbsury. Kingsland Primary at Stockland Green & Osborne Primary at St Edmund Campion.
Unfortunately due to the snowy weather of recent, the Final had to be cancelled so it was decided that the top scores from the cluster events would be collated to determine the overall winner to represent our Partnership at the Birmingham Level 3 School Games event on 27th March - the winner was St
Barnabas CE Primary School so congratulations.

PROUD OF OUR LEADERS !
SECONDARY GIRLS’ FOOTBALLKingsbury hosted the Year 9&10 Girls’ Football competition. The event was officiated by Kingsbury and St Edmund Campion Sports Leaders, and the girls played with passion and determination. The eventual winners were Stockland Green, who went on to represent Kingsbury SSP at the Birmingham Secondary Level 3 School Games.
LEVEL 2 SECONDARY SCHOOL GAMES EVENTFriday 2nd November saw the launch of the Kingsbury SSP Secondary Schools’ Level 2 School Games. Kingsbury School and Sports College hosted the event, using staff and Sports Leaders to set up and run Girls’ Football, Boys’ Table Tennis and Boys’ Badminton compeGGons. Stockland Green, St Edmund Campion, Great Barr, Kingsbury, Cardinal Wiseman, and Perry Beeches all sent representaGves for a great aKernoon of compeGGon. Perry Beeches were victorious in the Girls’ Football, with St Edmund Campion winning the Boys’ Badminton, and Great Barr and Kingsbury winning age groups in the Table Tennis. All of these schools went on to represent Kingsbury SSP at the Birmingham Secondary Level 3 School Games.
KINGSBURY SCHOOL AND SPORTS COLLEGE SPORTS LEADERS
The Kingsbury Sports Leaders have had a very busy term, leading and officiating at primary events. They have demonstrated the range of skills that they have when working with primary pupils superbly, receiving positive feedback from teachers attending the events with their pupils.
A group of year 11 Hockey Leaders had a fantastic opportunity to work with Birches Green Junior School and England Hockey. The leaders were filmed running activities and games, as part of a new quicksticks hockey initiative and were featured on the England Hockey website. The students were excellent role models to the younger Birches Green pupils, who had great fun whilst learning new skills too. The Hockey Leaders are now working with a community hockey coach and will be delivering quicksticks hockey sessions at Birches Green Juniors during their golden time sessions.
A group of Sports Leaders from years 8,9 and 10 have been going into St Barnabas CE Primary School on Fridays after school to run level 1 Virtual Sportshall Athletics competitions. The pupils have had great fun, all trying to out jump, bounce and throw each other with the Kingsbury Sports Leaders coaching, supporting and officiating their efforts.
A group of 40 young sports enthusiasts attended the Birmingham Step into Sport Event on Friday 1 February at the Birmingham Futsal Arena. We organised the event and it was the first of its kind to run in the city.
The event was unique in that it brought both disabled and non-disabled young people together to develop their leadership skills and their knowledge on how to provide inclusive activity. Students worked in various groups allowing them to understand each others abilities and understand how they adapt their lifestyles to perform everyday tasks and sports activities. London 2012 Paralympic Silver medalist Claire Cashmore worked with students throughout the day demonstrating how it is possible to participate in sport and achieve your dream even if you have a disability.
The most important part of the day was that able-bodied students were also working alongside other young people that have a disability. The day proved yet again that our young people really are inspirational as they came up with some great new inclusive games!
All the students that attended are keen to support disability activities back in their school or local area. The students from our partnership, which includes Kingsbury, ST Edmund Campion, Priestly Smith and Queensbury will all be working together to deliver a festival for the special & mainstream schools after Easter.
We would like to thank the following schools for attending:Kingsbury School & Sports College, St Edmund Campion, Golden Hillock, Braidwood, Hodge Hill Mixed, Queensbury and Priestly Smith Alison Mapp, PDM said that “although the event was a great success, there was a lack of representation from across the whole city. Schools, clubs and local leisure providers still need to do more to encourage young disabled people to get involved in sport whether it is as a participant or a volunteer. The Step into Sport Event will hopefully be one of many big steps we take to try and reduce the gaps provision and provide equality for all”

SECONDARY UPDATE
Professional Development Opportunities
Kingsbury SSP in partnership with Youth Sport Trust, are in the enviable position of being able to offer free training on two new initiatives by YST on teaching Primary PE. Many partnership schools sent teachers on the `Matalan Sporting Promise’ course (KS2) and the ‘Bupa Start to Move’ course (KS1). We will watch with interest to see how these initiatives will impact on our primary pupils and their teachers
PLAYLEADERTRAININGBirches Green Infants, Warren Farm, Sundridge and Slade Primary Schools have all received playleader training this term. The pupils were all fantastic, and had great ideas about how to organise themselves and set up activities for other children in their school to play.
Primary Literacy and Numeracy through Sport Projects.Osborne Primary School has been piloGng 2 projects with their Year 6 pupils and Kingsbury SSP. These projects are aimed at delivering literacy and numeracy lessons through the medium of sport. The pupils have really enjoyed the projects, and had lots of posiGve things to say about their learning in literacy and numeracy and the successes that they had from the projects.
St Barnabas CE Primary School launched their Sports College this term with Kingsbury SSP invited to go to speak to the children about the benefits of being involved in school and community sport. It was a lovely aKernoon, with the children all very keen about their Sports College.
Paget Primary School held a Health Week, and Kingsbury SSP were invited to run Skip to be Fit sessions with all classes. It was great fun, though exhausGng at Gmes! Well done to all of the pupils who kept going and certainly showed that they can ‘skip to be fit’!
Primary Gymnastics DVD and Resource support
Schools in the partnership are now beginning to use the fabulous gymnastics teaching resource developed and published by Kingsbury SSP, and have taken advantage of the bespoke CPD opportunities on offer. We look forward to seeing pupils enjoying their gymnastics lessons and developing skills to become the next Louis Smith or Beth Tweddle!
