Message from the Head Teacher
Dear staff, students, parents and carers,
This is my last head teacher message for the newsletter. I have had an incredible experience as head of this school. It has been an amazing five and a half years.
Kingsbury is a challenging school to work in for all sorts of reasons. It is also a dynamic and exciting learning environment where the vast majority of students come to school to achieve. It has been my job to make sure that Kingsbury students leave with the best possible academic qualifications and the personal skills and qualities that will help them to
succeed in the future, whatever path they choose to take. I also want to provide them with rich experiences, like those featured in this newsletter.
I have really enjoyed my time here and have left the school in good shape with a sound platform on which to build. I shall look back on my time at Kingsbury with great fondness. May I take this opportunity to thank you for the support that you have given me and wish you all a safe and happy Easter break.
Farewell and good luck for the future.
Ms S Coulton, Head Teacher

Hearing impairment Sharon Poxon, a teacher of deaf children, recently delivered an assembly to Year 8 to raise awareness of the issues this can cause in school, what it is like to be deaf, and how they can help. If parents have concerns that their child is experiencing difficulty with their hearing, they should contact Mrs Fowler, the school hearing
impairment coordinator. Mrs Hitchins

World Book Day Visit Local author Richard Denning, writer of young
adult sci-fi and historical fiction, visited us
recently. The day included a lively debate with
year 8 and 9 students about the science of time
travel and a discussion on Einstein‟s theories.
Who would have thought that a visit by a fiction
author would have encouraged learning about
physics! Mrs Bowley

FOCUS ON SCIENCE FACULTY Science is one of the three core subjects on the School Curriculum and we have 11 members of staff. From year 7
onwards, students study all three science subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. At GCSE they study Core
Science, Additional Science, Triple Science and Applied Science. In all subjects there is a strong focus on linking theory
with practical and everyday scenarios. This is referred to as „How Science Works‟ and students are expected to use
scientific methods for all investigations. D Graham, Faculty Leader, Science
KSSC goes to Cosford.....
Six students recently went to RAF Cosford to represent the school in a
GO4SET competition. Go4SET links teams of Year 8/9 students with
companies or universities to work on a „STEM‟ (Science, Technology,
Engineering & Maths) project, to raise awareness and highlight future
careers within these subjects. Mr B Singh
We are working with Rob, a civil engineer from the company Mouchel,
on a project about water and sport within our school. Whilst we were
at RAF Cosford we had a range of challenges, and after completing them all we got a chance
to roam around and it was quite brilliant. Hasan Saif-Ullah (9I)
...and Cosford comes to KSSC! To celebrate this year‟s theme of „World in Motion‟
for National Science & Engineering Week, KSSC
combined science with sport to create an
Enrichment Day full of exciting activities for all
students. Amongst the Science Faculty activities on
offer for Year 8 were making rockets and
sportswear design. Thank you to all the staff for
their hard work, and also to Phil Clayton from the
RAF Museum Cosford who came to support us on
the day with a rocket car challenge.

Surfing the waves
Year 9 students h a v e b e e n learning a b o u t w a v e s as part of the m odu le
on the Electro magnetic (E-M) spectrum. We used a ripple tank to project waves on to the ceiling, allowing us to model “wavelengths” to help us understand how microwaves are different from radio waves, for example. Students are applying their knowledge to find out whether the E-M waves given out by mobile phones and Wi-Fi transmitters are harmful or not! Some students are now thinking twice about how long they spend on their phones and are advising others to limit their phone use through a range of creative posters.

FOCUS ON COMMUNITY
KSSC supports healthy active lifestyles
The World Health Organization is a campaign which each year focuses on a
single health challenge that will have a global impact. This year, for World
Health Day on 7 April 2012, WHO is focusing on ageing and health with the theme „‟Good health adds
years to life’’. A healthy diet and regular exercise can add years to your life span – what are you doing?
KSSC provides students with extra curricular opportunities to support healthy active lifestyles; the
timetable is on the school website under Students. Ms Walters
Year 10 Boys’ football
The semi final of the Erdington and Saltley District Cup produced a nail biting encounter that saw a 2-2 draw
after NBA equalised in the final minute. Following extra time, KSSC won 4-1 on penalties with Connor
Forgie scoring the decisive kick. The entire team showed spirit, enthusiasm and a determination to win. As
this newsletter goes to press, the team are preparing for the final on 23rd
March at Bodymoor Heath. Mr Brough
F a i r T r a d e F o r t n i g h t Last month, students from the TLC and those
undertaking the CoPE award were busy fundrais-
ing to support Traidcraft, a charity which fights
poverty through trade in developing countries.
They held coffee mornings and a raffle, supported
by staff Mrs Ivery, Mrs Sharp and Mrs Fowler,
and succeeded in raising £109. Well done to all
the students and staff involved. Mrs Ivery
Ski Trip
KSSC students have
recently returned
from a wonderful
week skiing in the
Swiss Alps as part of
a large group from
Birmingham schools.
Most of our students
were first time skiers
but that did not put
them off working
really hard and by
the end of the week
they were ski-ing
across large parts of the resort and even into France.
They were a credit to the school. Mr Halstead

I enjoyed the competition, considering it
was the first time since 2010 I've felt on
form following my hamstring injury. I've
made a great start to the year with a
silver medal in the bag. I hope that
success can continue to the outdoor season when I
represent Birmingham at the UK 2012 School Games at the
Olympic Park in May. Many thanks to the school, my Dad (#1
fan) and my Coach. Simbarashe Rwambiwa (11G)
