    What is breast cancer?

Occurs when abnormal breast cells in the ducts divideuncontrollably forming a tumour.

    There are 2 MAIN types:

    1. Invasive Ductile Carcinoma (infiltrative carcinoma)- If

the cancer cells break out of the ducts, they can spreadto lymphatic system. It may then spread through this to

healthy tissues in the body. Most common breast

cancer makes up for around 70-80%. Cancer that most

    commonly affects men.

    2. Non-invasive (Ductal Carcinoma in Situ)- Cancer cells

grow inside the ducts and do not spread. Easily cured in

    early stages.

So, IDC is more dangerous than DCIS.

    Everybody is affected

Most common cause of death from cancer, among

Hispanic women and second most common death from

cancer among other ethnicities (lung cancer being the

    first.)

12.5% of women will develop breast cancer sometime

in her life, thats one out of every 8 women! However

only 0.001% of men will likely get it!

Only around 15% of breast cancers are caused by gene

mutations, inherited from parents, while 85% of breast

cancers occur in women with no history of breast

    cancer.

    How to reduce the risk?

If you have a history of breast cancer in your

family, you should consult with a doctor.

Periodically do checks on yourself - Is there

a lump under the breast or underarm area?

Is there swelling, redness or darkening of the

breast? Is there a change is the size or

shape? Is it itchy? Is there any pain thatwont go away?

    Men get breast cancer too!

Affects around 1 in 100,000 men in UK Symptoms include lump in breast (mostly caused by

    gynaecomastia), retraction, or discharge.

Generally caused by age, genetics (history of breastcancer in males or females), obesity. Treated by removing the cancer along with section of

    breast. Hormones suppressed using tamoxifen.

Radiotherapy or chemotherapy may be used for samepurpose.

Outlook for men worse because its more difficult to spotand diagnose than in women - should see doctor if lump

    or discharge found in breast.
