Structure of a newspaper.

For a good headline, you need to:• Catch the reader’s attention so they want to read the rest of the report.

• Sum up the story in a few words.

• Use powerful and interesting language.

• Write in the present tense –even if the report is about an event that has already happened.

• Include alliteration or wit at times.

Print Newspaper HeadlinesNewspaper headlines need to be:• Eye-catching• A title for the news story• Short and snappy.

1. A boy finds a stash of gold Roman coins in the local park.

2. A girl from your local area is chosen for the Team GB Gymnastic team at the 2020 Olympics.

3. A giraffe escapes from a zoo and makes it down the road into the supermarket car park.

4. 500 dogs and their owners do a 5km run and raise thousands for charity.

5. A bridge in a local town falls into the river causing chaos for the town.

Structure of a newspaper.

Lead paragraph

For a good lead paragraph, you need to;• Make the paragraph short

and snappy so that it briefly explains what has happened.

• Ensure that even if the reader stopped reading at this point, they would still know roughly what happened.

• Use past tense in most cases.

• Make sure the first paragraph answers as many of these five questions as you can –Who? What? Where? Why?

Activity.

Use the internet or a newspaper in your house to find an article that is suitable for you. Can you identify the 5 w’s in the lead paragraph? Stick the article in your book and highlight each feature and create a key. If you find any other features include these in your key.
