What is Audit?

Audit is essential for the operation of any business. An auditor conducts financial examinations to provide an opinion on whether clients’ financial reports provide an accurate reflection of their business.

Audit is not just about the numbers; it is about training bright young professionals to understand how businesses work and operate; how these businesses exploit commercial opportunities and manage risks and how the results of these activities are then accurately presented in a set of annual financial statements. It is for this reason that audit training is an excellent business foundation for graduates with an ambition to either work in, or run their own business.

Statutory Audit is a very significant part of what we do. It is a critical element of what the Capital Markets expect from an independent auditor; to provide assurance to investors and shareholders on their financial statements. To be able to provide such assurance, an auditor needs to have developed an in-depth understanding of a client’s business, the key operational and financial risks that the business is exposed to and how these are reflected in the company’s results.

In recent years our audit practice has invested heavily in developing Data and Analytic tools which put our audit approach at the forefront of IT enabled auditing. Use of these tools in our audits gives our clients a higher quality audit while also eliminating certain routine tasks. We have also customised our training to ensure that all of our people get appropriate training in the use of these tools.

We work with our Transaction Services department when assisting our audit clients on IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, to provide them with the services and solutions that they need.

Who do we audit?

The range of experience that you will get in KPMG’s Audit practice is varied. Perhaps the most obvious benchmark is the fact that we audit over 40% of the companies listed on the Irish Stock Exchange, companies such as Ryanair, Independent News and Media, Paddy Power, Greencore and Fyffes. However, we are also the predominant auditor to large private Irish companies, which is at the core of the origins of KPMG. Continuous DevelopmentGraduate Development Programme: Audit & Advisory

The Audit & Advisory Graduate Development Programme involves delivering quality training with integrated work experience. The practical nature of our training and the blended learning approach is key to the successful development of our trainees. What you can expect:

• A unique twelve week training programme which combines up to 8 weeks of classroom learning, where you will receive technical, professional and leadership skills training, with 4 weeks of integrated on-the-job training

• Professional development modules throughout the programme to prepare you for working in a professional environment

• A range of technology based learning options to supplement your classroom based training – allowing you to revisit learning as required

• Comprehensive accounting skills training that will help you in your professional career and accountancy exams

• A series of smaller workshop sessions to supplement the main classroom programme

• All our training is facilitated by leading audit and advisory professionals as well as external experts.

Graduate Development Programme: Tax

The Tax Graduate Development Programme offers a theoretical and practical learning foundation. The programme is a blend of classroom and technology based learning and features a practical tax research project with support and feedback provided by a number of Tax Partners.

What you can expect:

• In the first year of joining KPMG, you will attend a 3 to 4 week block of structured training. This is a mixture of tax technical skills, leadership and business training, and IT skills. The emphasis on professional development is also key, focusing on areas such as writing skills, presentation skills, study skills and time management

• You will receive comprehensive accounting skills training that will help you throughout your professional career and in preparation for your accountancy exams and tax exams

• You will also get involved in a practical research project where you will be provided with guidance on tax research skills before conducting your research in groups

• All our training is facilitated by leading tax professionals and external experts.

Sports & Social

Our social activities include team away days, nights out, graduate welcome parties, Summer & Christmas parties, table quizzes, concerts, theatre and sporting events.

We have a strong sporting culture at KPMG. We participate in intra-corporate hockey, soccer and tag rugby leagues, GAA matches, golf events, tennis tournaments and athletics competitions.

On an international level, we compete in annual tournaments against other KPMG firms. These hockey, tennis, soccer, volleyball and rugby tournaments are really great fun and are a good way to meet colleagues from our offices overseas.

Many Sporting and Social events happen throughout the year, providing the opportunity to interact and socialise with colleagues across the firm.

We run a variety of education programmes such as Junior Achievement, mentoring students and our ‘Get Cents’ money management programme that targets early school leavers, homeless people and young people with intellectual disabilities.

Charitable support

We support a range of charities and we encourage our staff to fundraise for charity, with the firm making a contribution to all fundraising efforts. We also have a ‘CSR Bank’ where staff can use two days per year to work for charitable organisations.

Environment

We have reduced our carbon footprint by over 10% with initiatives such as moving to renewable energy, increasing our recycling initiatives and promoting sustainable travel.
