Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease How do you treat it? If Lyme Disease is caught early, oral or intravenous antibiotics will usually subdue the disease or eliminate it entirely. However, if the disease persists for an extended length of time, there will be long term cognitive damage that may affect bodily functions. What is Lyme Disease? Lyme disease is cause by a bacteria that affects the central nervous system. Lyme disease inhibits cognitive ability, including the ability to think, in children. Other symptoms include headaches, mood swings, irritability, depression and fatigue. What is KPLD? The Pediatric Lyme Disease Emergency Fund began as a 2000-2001 New York District Kiwanis Governor Project (Under Gov. John Gridley). The fund was recognized as a 501(c)3 organization in 2002 and assists families to pay medical bills for treatment. What can you do? The best way to help the fund is through monetary contribution and awareness initiatives.
