KOWA• Kowa American is the US offices of
KOWA Corp in Japan
• One of the largest privately held companies in Japan
• Kowa produces pharmaceuticals, optical good, electroptical instruments, textiles and activated carbon
KOWA
• Kowa is a worldwide trading organization
• Products include chemicals, textiles, floor tile, fashion accessories, sporting goods, shoes, and foodstuffs
• Offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chile, Germany, Italy, China (5), and most Asian countries
KOWA• Chemical trading division sells a wide
variety of chemical products into the United States including– monomers– VOC exempt solvent PCBTF specialty glycols
additives– viscosity modifiers– isocyanates– specialty intermediates
p-Chlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBTF)
• Only aromatic solvent that is VOC exempt. • Excellent solvency & diluent properties with almost all
commercially available coating resins and co-solvents. (solubility parameter = 8.6)
• PCBTF has low acidity ( < 3 ppm) and low moisture (< 150 ppm) and very stable structure for use in highly urethane and epoxy systems
• Moderate flashpoint (43°C) and evaporation rate (.9) slightly less than Butyl Acetate (1.0)
Cl CF3
SPECIALTY GLYCOL ETHERS
OVER 40 SPECIALTY GLYCOL ETHERSETHERS BASED ON MEG, DiEG, TriEG,
Poly EG, PG, DiPG AND TriPGBoth mono-alkyl and dialkyl ethers availableFor coatings requiring solvents with unique
balance of hydrophobic & hydrophilic nature for superior coalescent, evaporation and coupling properties
HDI Triisocyanurate
• Aliphatic Isocyanate for specialty urethane coatings to improve weatherability and durability
• Available in trimer or triisocyanurate (100% solids) form for handling & environmental safety
• New long term source to offset Lyondell’s recent USA market departure

POLYMERIZABLE SURFACTANTS & SPECIALTY CROSSLINKERS
Polyethylene Glycol Monomethacrylate
• Polymerizable surfactant• Polyethylene monomethacrylate for increasing hydrophilic
properties in finished resins • Further crosslinking of pendant hydroxy group possible • Formed by ethoxylation of methacrylic acid, diester
content increases with chain length (for low diester needs try the methoxy peg mono(meth)acrylates)

Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate Acid Phosphate
• Adhesion promoting monomer for metal and surfaces
• Acid functionality can be used for crosslinking reactions
• Under development is a 4-Hydroxybutyl analog for better compatibility with more organophilic monomers

Methacrylamide
• A low toxicity replacement for acylamide• Generally used as low volume co-monomer to modify a
variety properties of different types of polymers including acrylic, acrylonitrile, styrene, VCM, VAM and butadiene based resins
• Produces lower viscosity and less water soluble resins than acrylamide based resins

Isocyanatoethyl Methacrylate (MOI)
• UNIQUE DUAL FUNCTIONAL MONOMER• Can be used to produce a variety of isocyanate functional • Resins or oligomers with a methacrylic backbone• Can alternately be used to form specialty methacrylate
functional monomers or oligomers• Above reactions can be undertaken in relatively clean
manner with minimal side reactions or disruption of the other functional group
