Culture CornerOld Phuket Town TrailsWALKING TOUR
A journey into Phuket Town’s past begins with a walk - one that encompasses treasures easily missed from the back seat of a taxi. This isn’t a strenuous stroll, about 2km, however gives a real feel of Old Town. Let the PHUKET TREASURE MAP guide you along viewing the cultural and contemporary areas, historic buildings, shops, eateries and special places.
Follow the foot prints starting at the Promthep Clock Tower M (See on MAP - START HERE). Facing south, walk the block and around the corner onto Rasada Road. Follow it up to Suriyadate Fountain O past the award-winning Bank of Ayudhaya N Sino-Colonial building, on left side. Continuing straight up on Ranong Road takes you through the Fresh Market. Turn left at Soi Phutorn to Pud Jow Shrine F and Jui Tui Shrine G
Alternatively, you may choose to loop right around from the Suriyadate Fountain onto Yaowarat Road. Decide if you will go straight along or right onto Phang Nga Road. If you look carefully on Phang Nga’s north side, about 50m from the corner of Yaowarat Road T-junction, spot an archway indicating a Chinese shrine. Walk through the newly renovated entrance and soi (lane) and behold the Shrine of Serene Light H
Back along Phang Nga, note the historic The Memory At On On Hotel FFwhere the opening scenes of the movie, The Beach were filmed. One street north running parallel to Phang Nga Road is Thalang Road U one of the main supply streets. Like nearby Soi Romanee D (a visual joy in itself with memorable photo opportunities), the overhead wires have recently been buried adding to its historical ambiance and Sino Colonial splendour. As you pass, take a moment to appreciate the flavour of old Phuket. For local cultural information visit the Tourist Information Center B You will see also or perhaps first sniff, the aromatic Nguan Choon Tong, Phuket’s oldest Chinese herbal medicine shop W Continuing - walking west, Thalang Road turns into Krabi Road where you will want to visit the splendid Phuket Thaihua Museum C – housed in a 1911 Chinese language school.
Finish your stroll at 96 Krabi Road A The surreal setting and Phuket Town’s grandest and most distinguished angmor-lao (foreign mansion) has now opened its doors as the world renowned Blue Elephant Governor Mansion Phuket - Cooking School & Restaurant, Royal Thai Cuisine.
The surrounding - Soi Romanee, Satun, Ranong, Dibuk, Yaowarat roads and up Rang Hill all add their own charm to beloved Phuket Town.
Phuket Island is a brilliant blend of fine beaches, azure seas and its little known captivating cultural tin-mining history. A walk in Old Phuket Town explores the diverse past of its multicultural heritage.

Happy Chinese New YearBringing In the New Year, Expel the Old
Gong Xhi Faa Chai ! Gong Hey Fat Choy !
8th February, 2016: Year of the Monkey
The most important of Chinese celebrations, the New Year is observed worldwide by overseas Chinese communities. Phuket, where migrants
from Fujian province settled more than 200 years ago, is no exception.
The ear-splitting firecrackers that accompany the celebrations are a traditional way of sending out the
old year and welcoming in the New Year. On the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve tradition dictates
that every door and window in the house are opened to allow the old year to depart.
Chinese New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are celebrated as a family affair - a time of reunion and
giving thanks. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect as they were responsible for laying
the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.

Commemorating their bravery of the historic defense in 1785 against Burmese invaders, these two women gathered the small forces they had and cleverly disguised local women as male soldiers – thus appearing to have increased their military manpower. A treasure easily missed! Built in 1889, (2432 on the Buddhist calendar), the Shrine of Serene Light, a Taoist temple, was constructed by a local Hokkien Chinese family. The interior wall murals tell many stories of Si-in-gui, a legendary folk hero. Chinese characters on the two side
walls are blessings for healing and good luck. The garden in front provides a calm sanctuary from the bustle of the city.
Shrine of Serene Light H
The Kasikorn Bank, Phang Nga Road in Old Phuket Town recently was remodeled becoming an iconic landmark. The renovation reflects the distinctive local community’s Sino-Colonial architectural style. The 56 million baht revamp fits well with the theme of ‘Lifestyle Banking’.
EEKasikorn Bank
Phuket was an important trade centre for Indian, Malay, Arab and European traders who exchanged global goods for local tin and rubber. Centuries ago, Hokkien Chinese immigrants arrived following new opportunities in tin-mining. Their distinctive culture, including row house or shop-house architecture, changed the face of Phuket Town. Known as Sino-European or Sino-Colonial styling, Chinese characters featured with European Classic and Roman periods, producing distinctive buildings in peninsular Siam. Now, centuries post the tin-mining heyday that made many wealthy merchants, revitalisation of the Town’s spirit is shaping a new era.
PHUKET TOWN’S SINO-COLONIAL PAST
A strong feature of Sino Colonial architecture is the ‘five-foot way’ – the high roof covered, curved archways that cleverly joins one shophouse to the next.
Ngoh-kaa-kee or Five-foot-way
This is one of the most photographed small streets of Old Town. The name Romanee with varying meanings from beautiful, adorable to naughty with the ladies, reflects popular activities during the tin mining period as the worker’s entertainment place. The Dragon Within - many
building fronts resemble a Dragon’s face. The eyes are the big side windows, while the door is the mouth, and eyebrows are the smaller shaped higher windows.
Soi Romanee D
Pud Jow Shrine
Near Jui Tui Shrine on Ranong Road find Pud Jow Shrine which was built over a century ago. Many Chinese deities revered by Hokkien people are housed here. The principle deity, Kuan Im Tai Sow La is believed to protect you from devils, while Sid Sae Niaw is the god of all creatures and Ju Se Niaw as the god of deed records of humans is believed to bestow babies to those who wish for this.

Built in 1911 (2454) and known as Hua Boon School and Shrine - a Chinese Language School of the highest levels. In 1946 (2489), the name changed to Phuket Jung Hua School and again in 1948 to Thai Hua School. A second storey was built in 1934 (2477). Notice the three archways with Ionic and Corinthian detailing. Bat motifs, a symbol of goodness are stucco aspects in the outer ceilings. Open for viewing Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 to 19.00 hours. Closed on Monday and official holidays. There is no entrance fee but donations are welcomed.
Phuket Thaihua Museum C
Built in 1934 (2477 on the Buddhist calendar), this shrine, also named Tao Bong Keng Shrine or Chai Tueng, houses Phra Tian Hu Nguan Sow (Lao la) as the principle deity. Worship the deity, Tai Song Sam Tong Ong for professional prosperity.
Bang Niew Shrine
Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng Shrine
Many attend this shrine for their physical health. It is a base for those serious worshippers during the Vegetarian Festival.
This landmark Old Town hotel was featured in the film ‘The Beach’. Opened in 1929 as the first hotel in Phuket, the On On serviced mostly merchants and sailors that travelled here as a result of the tin mining boom. The charm of the heritage Sino-Colonial architecture has recently been restored and renovated. In Chinese language, On On (Un Un) means wellness bringing happiness to all travelers.
