We respectfully acknowledge the past and present
traditional owners of this land on which we are meeting, the
Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nations
Womin Je Ka Welcome
The Review that resulted in the Wannik found that there has been a fundamental failure at the system level to adequately address the needs of Koorie students
Therefore the . . .education outcomes of Koorie students are way behind that of non Koorie students on every performance measure
What does Wannik propose to do?
1. Reform the government school system’s education of Koorie students
2. Support greater student engagement
3. Provide more literacy and numeracy support
4. Provide support and encouragement for high-achieving students
5. Expand and develop the Koorie support workforce
6. Renew our focus on parental engagement
7. Share responsibility across government
What does this mean for NMR? That schools must create a culture of high
expectations and individualised learning for Koorie students
Koorie Education is everyone’s business Every school a ‘Koorie’ school Individualised learning must be supported in
schools Changing our practices – suspensions,
expulsions, transfers out , an end to ‘pass the parcel’ etc
Involving parents and the koorie community in partnership
Closing the Gap
Demographics 1215 students in NMR in 2008 Second biggest cohort in Victoria Fastest growing Koorie student
population 18% of Statewide Koorie students
in Government schools Koorie students in 179/204 of NMR
schools (88%) 11 schools 20+ Koorie students
