The melancholy strains of “Auld Lang Syne” fade away. My hubby Sung’s football madness isn’t quite over, but even the most ardent fans are weary. The holiday season closes down and life returns to normal. The one thing we can say for certain is that the New Year is now. It is a time of a new beginning.

How do we start a new year? There are so many places we can legitimately begin. The temptation to draft a list of resolutions is almost overwhelm-ing. We take secret vows to try harder and do bet-ter at keeping our resolutions. Good intentions aren’t a bad thing; nor are well-intended vows at self-reform. Yet the struggles remain. At the point of our weakness, the Christian faith invites us to reconnect with God. We are embraced by the grace of God, God’s radically free and wholly un-merited redeeming love.

At the crossroads of grace and beginnings, the beginning of the year 2019 beckons the people of Kona United Methodist Church (KUMC) to the cel-ebration spirit of its 30th anniversary.

Kona umc newsletter

The establishment of KUMC was begun in 1982 with the people who moved from Hilo as a core group. Steve and Charlene Bess who were the members of Hilo United Methodist Church (HUMC) moved to Kona for a new job in 1982. They were not able to find a mainline Protestant Church to attend. So, they asked Rev. Brian Sanderson who was the pastor at HUMC to conduct services in Kona for them and oth-er people they found who had the same problem. Rev. Sanderson and the leadership team of HUMC (Dennis Y. Suenobu and Richard Matsunaga) agreed to offer a Christian worship service on the first Sunday of every month in the evening. At first, they met at alternate homes like the Clancy home with five families, but moved to the Kona YMCA as the numbers grew. By 1985, the number of people attending the service had gotten close to fifty, so the meeting was held at the Old King Kamehameha Hotel and then the parking lot of a local irri-gation company owned by the Crossley family. The devel-oping congregation moved beyond the bi-weekly worship schedule of the Big Island pastors, so the congregation re-ceived two hard working interns solidly focusing on devel-oping its ministry. The momentum in ministry was created and expanded even more to include sponsoring the people of Tonga in Kona. Kona UMC was officially chartered on March 26, 1989, Easter Sunday and therefore the church’s anniversary is celebrated every Easter. Of the original 66 charter mem-bers, we still have four faithful charter members carrying out the mission/vision of the church actively. They are Gloria Juan, Norma Julia, Sue Pyun and Lisa Uemura.

Throughout the year 2019 we will be in the spirit of cele-bration. However, officially the celebration at KUMC will begin on Palm Sunday (4/14) with all language ministries in the congregation coming together. We are still in the formation stage of the 30th Anniversary Taskforce Team to brainstorm the plan together for the year of celebration at KUMC. Please contact me if you are available and willing to share your gifts in designing the plan and carrying out the plan with others. Let us celebrate this amazing gift God has given us—Kona United Methodist Church on this beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Ribbit! ~ Pastor Sunny

Keiki Ministry Some Sunday mornings we have a Keiki Moment at the be-ginning of our Sunday service. We often tie in the discus-sion with the message the children will have in their class. Then the children meet to talk about Bible stories, solve puzzles, color in Bible pictures and perhaps make some craft items. This group is for children up to the age of 12. Luther Matsen and the keiki’s on a Sunday morning

Starting January 7th 2019! We are a group of women to get together to study and discuss the women of the Bible. As we read we will look at the time the woman being discussed lived and her culture. We will read all or most of the mentions of her in Scripture and consider the context of the story and the language it was written in. We have been alternating between the Old Testament and the New Testament stories. Thus far we have read about Eve, Hul-dah, Priscilla, Hannah, Deborah, Susanna, and the unnamed woman of 1 Timothy. Come, enjoy the fellowship and tell us who you would like to read about. Speak to Teri King if you have any questions.

Book Reading Group 1:30pm, Starting date to be

announced

“Gender Roles and the People of God” By Alice Matthews Most women in the church don't aspire to "lord it" over men, nor do they want to scramble for po-sition. Instead, they want to be

accepted as full participants in God's work, sharing in kingdom tasks in ways that use their gifts appropriately. In Gender Roles and the People of God, author, radio host, and professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary Alice Mathews surveys the roles women have played in the Bible and throughout church history, demonstrating both the inspiring contributions of women and the many hurdles that have been placed in their path. Along the way, she investigates the difficult passages often used to preclude women from certain areas of service, pointing to better and more faithful understandings of those vers-es. See Teri King to purchase books and sign up for the group. Starts in January 2019!

Love that builds up By Teri King

Nurturing Ministry Lay Leader

7 O God, how extravagant is your cherishing love! All mankind can find a hiding place under the shadow of your wings. 8 All may drink of the anointing from the abundance of your house. All may drink their fill from the delightful springs of Eden. 9 To know you is to experience a flowing fountain drinking in your life, springing up to satisfy. In the light of your holiness we receive the light of revelation.

(Psalms 36:7-9)

In order to do the works of agape love one must know what they are and then do them. One is no good without the other. Knowledge is important. Action is equally important.

Greek words for love are: 1. Storge — used very generally. It can be used relevant to the love of animals, love of one’s family,

of country, even of one’s favorite sports team. 2. Eros — used relevant to intimate love, lust and sometimes also for appreciation of beauty 3. Phileo — “brotherly” love between friends, mental intimate affection and friendship. The empha-

sis is on mental and soul affection. Thus, philanthropist is one who loves his fellow man and phi-lologist means one who loves words.

4. Agape — selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love. Agape perfectly describes the kind of love Jesus Christ shared with His Father and they gave to all people. Basically, God is love, and Jesus is Love personified. To better understand this type of Love one must get to know God/Jesus more inti-mately.

According to 1 Corinthians 13 without agape love our words are reduced to noise, our knowledge and influence would be worth nothing, and our good deeds would be lacking of eternal value. How do we fix this? According to Philippians 2 we must consider our fellow Christians as our family. In authentic humility we are to put others first and consider their needs and interests as well as our own. Do our words and actions have a positive influence on others? Are we building up the Lord’s family? One of the more surprising out-comes of seeking to build others up is that it tends to increase our compassion and appreciation of them. What do you think?

Food For Thought….

Introduction to Boxing

This is an 8-week pilot program with 16 sessions to be held on Mondays and Thursdays, from 3pm-5pm, at Kona United Methodist Church starting January 14, 2019, taught by Coach Gary Dugaran and Coach Donn Kawabata. This program is for children 8-12 years old (3rd-6th Grades). The maximum number of children in class is 20.

There is NO monetary registration fee for the pro-gram. However, the parent/guardian must consent to (1) be present at each session to support the child and participate as needed, (2) attend the 8:30am worship service at Kona United Methodist Church on the first Sunday of each month, with the child, during the class, and (3) participate, with the child, in the KUMC Box-ing Recognition Program to be held during in the 8:30amworship service at the end of the program.

Pre-registration is required. It is a first-come, first-served basis until the class reaches its maximum num-ber of children. The registration form can be obtained at the church office and needs to be turned in and

marked by the church office personnel during the office hours (Monday-Thursday, 10am-2pm) in order to be officially registered.

While the basics of boxing will be taught, the main goals of the program are to (1) build confidence, self-esteem, and discipline, that the children can carry with them throughout the course of their lives; (2) learn to maximize the stamina and strength levels while at the same time enhancing their motor coordi-nation; (3) enhance the parent/guardian-child relationship; and (4) expose the Biblical values and prin-ciples shared at Kona United Methodist Church. Geared towards creating a courageous and healthy younger generation in body, mind, and soul, the program is designed to develop strong ethical athletes who can teach other young people to be like them.

WHAT TO BRING Boxing shoes or bare feet, athletic wear, and hand wraps that can be obtained in class.

**After the Introduction Class, the program will be evaluated to discern the future possibilities and di-rection. Please speak to Tim Brady, Shery Talasinga, or Pastor Sunny if you have any questions.

Caring Ministry Karen von Kaenel

Let's talk etiquette! We all know how to behave at the dinner table and in church

but what about the hospital? It's important to protect yourself, the person you're visiting, other patients and people at home. There is a term, nosocomial infection, that is specific to infec-tions one acquires in the hospital. Nasty stuff, dangerous and avoidable. Through over fifty years on practice, I have observed many harmful and avoidable behaviors. So what are some steps to insure safety?

1. IF YOU FEEL ILL, DON'T VISIT...COUGHING, SNEEZING, DIARRHEA, HEADACHES,FEVER…. Then:

2. Wash your hands when you get where you are going.

3. Look, before entering a room. A sign, warning of infec-tion may be posted, along with instructions for your ac-tions/behaviors.

4. Sit where you belong. Each unit has a straight backed chair for visitors. The arm chair is for the patient...the exception would be when the patient in not allowed out of bed. Ask if you are confused, but do not use a chair belonging another patient; infections spread easily.

5. Beds are for the patients....as are bathrooms. Don't uti-lize them.

6. Be aware of how long you are staying and if you are dis-rupting rest. Visits are important, but sleep is neces-sary.

7. Keep your hands away from your face. If you touch things in the unit, wash your hands.

8. Leaving? Wash your hands well, and again, when you get home.

Flu season is upon us and an influx of visitors increases our vulnerability. We need to protect those we hold dear. Hospital etiquette is a positive step.

3rd Thursday of the Month

11:30am-1pm @ Hawaii Community College-Pa lamanui

Starting February, 2019

It is a “come & make your own lunch & talk to someone who can hear you without judgment” program. It is about satisfying physical and emotional hunger with our presence. Speak to Teri King or Pastor Sunny if you would like to join the ministry.

Membership Class Coming in March: Perhaps there are times when you have questions about the Christian faith, the United Methodist Church, or maybe even about Kona UMC. A two-session member-ship class will be offered on Sundays, March 17 and March 24, after the 8:30am morning worship to ex-plore what it means to become a member of the body of Christ through Kona UMC. There are many benefits of church membership, but first and foremost is that it expresses a commit-ment to Christ and to yourself to love and serve one another. (“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12) Then in turn the church body promises to love, serve and watch over you. Becoming a church member is a tangible affirmation of your profession of faith and it provides a means of accountability as you grow in the faith. It allows for you to develop real and vibrant relationships, to share in life together, to encourage each other and to perform good works. You may currently be a “friend” of KUMC, but won’t you prayerfully consider taking that extra step of faith and become a vital member of our church family? God wants people of different backgrounds and cultures to unite around Jesus, His Son, Our Lord, so that His glory is displayed through the church…our lovely, open-pavilion, multicultural body of Christ on the west-side of the Big Island in Kona – Kona Unit-ed Methodist Church. For those of you who are “friends” with home churches on the mainland, perhaps the Holy Spirit is prompting you to form stronger bonds with your island paradise church, Kona UMC. Then prayerfully consider an affiliate membership (if your home church is UMC) or an associate membership (if your home church is another denomination). Please speak to Pastor Sunny if you have any questions.

Anointing with Oil

“Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should

call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:13-14 NRSV)

We are continually being blessed and feel privileged to anoint & pray healing for the sick. After Holy Communion on the first Sunday of each month, the congregation is invited to stop by the prayer sta-tions & receive prayer. For sharing a prayer concern, please email to [email protected].

Rev. Howard Grinager from Alexandria UMC, Dakotas Annual Conference will bring a message to Kona UMC on Sunday, January 20! He is known to many of us just as “Howard,” the brother-in-law of Tim & Joyce Brady visiting us from South Da-

kota. Yes, it is true. He is. However, he is also a retired minister of The United Methodist Church. He has been in ministry for 35 years as a pastor to local churches and a District Superintendent of Dakotas Annual Conference.

Mandy Sullivan Guest Preacher on Sunday, January 27!

Mandy Sullivan is a Christian women’s speaker, writer, singer, and perfectly flawed woman of God. She attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, on a vocal music scholar-ship, majoring in communication and

minoring in sociology. Mandy also had the pleasure of studying abroad in London, at the University at Westminster, and the University of London. After college, she moved to Washington state, where she became a full-time Youth and Christian Education Director at a local church. She also served as a counselor in a domestic violence and sexual assault agency. In addition, she grew a successful home-based businesses as a Mary Kay Cadillac Sales Director.

Following a strong calling in her heart and soul, she returned to full-time ministry, and accepted a posi-tion as the Director of Discipleship and Family Ministries at a church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In her work and in life, she has felt a passion to speak and write for women to reach them where they are at in their own faith. She is the daughter of our beloved friends, Mel & Sandy McCleary.

Kona United Methodist Church (KUMC) will begin its new year with the 40 Days of Fasting Prayer-A-Thon. It will start January 1 and ends February 15, Monday through Saturday (except Sunday). All are encouraged to sign up to give up one meal per day, per week, per month or more and pray for KUMC, Pastors, Leaders, and the People of KUMC near and far. The prayer list will be available in December 2018. For those who have specific health conditions which affect your diet, we encourage you to sign up to pray without fasting. Here is the way the Fasting Prayer-A-Thon works: • If you sign up to give up a meal, no solid food, including fruits/milk products, or soft drinks are con-

sumed. You are to fast until the next meal time. You are only to drink water and a little black coffee during fasting.

• During fasting, pray for the church starting from the prayer list provided by the church. If you can think of more to be added, then add it to the list and pray for it. The point is for all of us to start pray-ing more intentionally for our church and to encourage others to do the same.
