Dear GJIS Families,

As every IB student would know, IB is a struggle, but gratefully, a rewarding one. Despite the struggle, the IB has pushed me into what I am today and

what I aspire to be in the future. It teaches me the importance of hard work, it allows me to discover and understand myself better, and it provides me with a foundation for demanding life challenges ahead. I know I would have not been here, if it wasn’t because of the IB Programmes and therefore, I am fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to push through my boundaries, and be open to great opportunities in the world.

Dear GJIS Families: I extend a warm welcome to the whole community at Tangerang and Global Jaya International School. We are excited about a number of school wide improvements and new staff who have joined us from Indonesia and throughout the world. These new teachers bring their professional expertise and unique talents to our educational community. It is both an honour and a pleasure to be leading our great team of dedicated professionals into our school’s 2014-15 academic year, as we work together to build happy memories and create bright futures for our students.

Our school year began on Monday the 11th of August. We welcomed returning GJIS families and over 130 new students from Kindergarten to Year 11. Our Student Support Services team prepared a two-day Induction Programme. The programme allowed our GJIS Buddies to help orientate new students to school life. We thank everyone involved for participating in making a smooth transition for Year 7 students and allowing new students to make friends and become familiar with the GJIS Campus.

August continues to be busy, highlighted by Independence Day Events on Monday the 18th of August. Students, teachers and support staff made the day incredibly successful and enjoyable for all. We are proud to celebrate national events during the calendar year and we feel this community effort enriches and supports our school’s vision and mission statements. A reminder of Global Jaya’s vision and mission can be viewed on our website: http://www.globaljaya.com/welcome/visionandmission/Pages/default.aspx

At present, we are committed to upgrading our IT hardware and software. By the end of Term 1, additional Wi-Fi routers will be set up in the Primary building. In the near future, students using laptops, iPads and smartphones will be able to access the most up-to-date educational tools to enhance their daily learning. Following hardware installation and testing, we plan to purchase iPads to further support learning in the classroom. Our ICT Support teachers are dedicated to aiding staff through the implementation and support of IT incentives in their classes, including lesson plan suggestions and more use of student management software, such as ManageBac , please stay tuned for more announcements about ManageBac and future parent workshops.

On behalf of the entire GJIS community, we wish all students, parents and teachers a successful and healthy start to the school year and I look forward to meeting you on campus. Our school newsletter known as “Kontak” will be available on our website and published the last Friday of each month.

Sincere regards,

Head of School

David J. Hornby

From June 15th - 19th 2014, 3000 of the world’s best school aged historians competed for a limited number of

first, second and third place positions at the National History Day Finals held at the University of Maryland in the United States. Amongst this throng of junior and senior historians, eleven GJIS students, who have all qualified through the GJIS History Day and SE Asian History Day events. Here are the GJIS students who participated in the finals; Ithing Prayitno, Hanna Nadira, Kim Hye Ri, Lee Jaewon, Gladys Edwinadia, Fayren Chaerunnissa, Avi Abiwardhani, Emily Sarah, Jeong Sungoh, Carla Hamida, Lee Jae Yun

What is the National History Day Contest, you ask? Each year more than half a million students participate. They choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research by looking through libraries, archives and museums, conduct oral history interviews, and visit historic sites. After they have analysed and interpreted their sources, and have drawn a conclusion about the significance of the topic, they will then be able to present their work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website.

“Every student who enters a National History Day contest is a winner for the skills they gain during their participation,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “The work these kids do is truly remarkable, and those who reach the national level are engaging in research and critical thinking that is beyond the high school, and in some cases the collegiate,

academic skill levels. I know we will continue to see great things from all of these students.”Over 300 historians and other education professionals evaluate the students’ work at the national competition. $150,000 worth of scholarships were awarded at the national awards ceremony to select students, and approximately 100 students took home cash prizes between $250 and $5,000 for superior work in a particular category of judging.

This trip was the culmination of months of dedicated work and each young historian thoroughly deserves their place in the finals. Their academic success has not come easy. Their journey began last September, when they were given the theme ‘Rights and Responsibilities’ in history to explore. This began their months of research, leading them to the GJIS National History Day event in January. Each student’s entry was judged and only the top three in each category qualified for a coveted place in the SE Asia finals at the British International School, Jakarta in March. The next round was even tougher as students from schools in Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Thailand and the Philippines fiercely contested the coveted positions that would qualify them to go to the National Finals at the University of Maryland this June.

I was extremely proud to introduce to you the GJIS young historians who flew our flag at the National History Day Finals and in their own words, learned what they have gained from their NHD experiences.

In the spirit of Indonesia’s Independence Day that falls on the 17th of August, GJIS held a whole day celebration on the following

Monday. As always, we kicked off the day with a whole school flag raising ceremony to commemorate our national heroes and honour our beloved country. In this event students and teachers were awed by the aura of patriotism when the students who were involved in the ceremony, marched with a rhythmic pace and synchronized movements. To sing the Indonesian national anthem and gaze in awe as “Sang Saka Merah Putih” ascends in its glory was quite an emotional experience for everyone who was there. A sense of pride swelled in our chests and we sang along with great fervor when Indonesian patriotic songs were sung. It was beautiful to see students and teachers, Indonesian or not, show honour and respect towards our great nation.

By Hanna Melissa Siahaan Y.12D

Afterwards, the celebration continued with a variety of games that are particular to Independence Day celebrations in Indonesia. Everybody was so excited because it’s been a while since we last celebrated Independence Day with games at school. The activities

included: a game of marbles, a sack race, cerdas cermat or quiz that challenged our knowledge of Indonesia, pencil in a bottle game, bakiak and last but not least, the legendary game of tug-of-war. Laughter and cheers were heard all day long and school spirit was in the air. There was a sense of nostalgia among many of us, but the feeling of joy and amusement were present in all of us.

11

At the end of the day, a general assembly was begun by a traditional Saman dance performance by the year 12s, followed by an empowering speech from Nadya Noor in year 11. And to wrap it up the Independence Day Committee, which consists of a number of

our Indonesian teachers presented “Gebyar- gebyar”.

It was a wonderful way to not only celebrate our country’s independence, but also to revive our spirits in welcoming the new school year. I would like to thank the Independence Day Celebration committee for the hard work and dedication they put into this event and also to

all the students for participating. Hopefully this celebration will continue to be an annual event here in GJIS. Merdeka!

IB Asia Pacific offers schools a number of different professional development options from which to choose. In-school workshops

are one of the options which GJIS chose to implement during the first and second day back for teachers (August 6th and 7th). Teachers were given the opportunity to participate in one of the following workshops;

• TheLearningEnvironment andInquiry

• TeachingandLearning

By conducting in-school workshops we were able to involve all Primary teachers and focus on specific programme issues and strategies. Some of the benefits of this approach are collaborative learning and planning, strengthening the school community and collective improvement to the school context/environment.

The programme has continued building on the successes of last year. GJIS has maintained the objective of providing quality professional development for coaches over the school year and, as a result the coaching standard among the teacher/coaches has

increased. I am very pleased with the quality of our sports programme that we are offering to our students across the school. This has built upon commitment both on the field and in the classroom, sportsmanship in victory or defeat and cooperation in striving for excellence. Our Commitment To Excellence in sports is centered upon the ideas of the 4C’s Commitment, Composure, Confidence and Communication.

The GJIS Sports Programme

The Jakarta Area Athletic Conference has emerged as a strong partnership between the top international schools in Jakarta. Volleyball, Soccer and Basketball all have a defined league schedule with a playoff format for the finals. This year, the league schedule will consist of both home and away games with the other members of our division. The playoff format will have quarter, semi, and finals. This will provide our students with a clear schedule and the incentive to fully commit the time and energy to a worthwhile opportunity that will improve a variety of sports related skills.

I am very pleased to witness the continued growth in numbers of participations in the Middle School Sports Programme. The focus of the coaches is skill development and supporting the core values of Physical Education Mission Statement. The mission of Physical Education is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life. Many of the coaches have commented about the students’ commitment and enthusiasm for representing GJIS.

I would like to thank Pak Colin and the coaches for their hard work in bringing structure to the sports programme for our Primary students.

The last week of the school year is traditionally the week of the Global Round

and so it was for 2014. Nine intrepid GJIS students (Mika Hainim, Fayren Chaerunnissa, Raysa Irzami, Zidny Arbi, Eyre Mamintada, Kris Wijaya, Jordan Hikmawan, Clara Florence and Keshia Saradima) took part in the Round that included debating, writing, team challenges, a scavenger hunt and knowledge of WSC materials. Our junior team (Mika, Fayren and Raysa) were three students out of 600, and though grossly outnumbered, still did well enough to be invited to the Tournament of Champions at Yale University in November. Our senior teams fared much better but were still little fish in a very big pond. Zidny, already a seasoned WSC performer with quite a large fleet of fans, wowed the audience with his guitar.

The number of attendees was overwhelming, and WSC has gone from a rather small competition to a huge event in the four years that GJIS has been competing. Whether or not the WSC will continue at GJIS with most of our seasoned competitors retiring and my leaving GJIS, remains to be seen.
