Empowering Young People

EMpower2013 Annual Update

our mission EMpower supports local organizations in emerging market countries that provide at-risk youth with the tools and resources they need to lead healthy, productive lives.

our vision We believe that young people are a critical resource for every country. Our strategic investments in locally-led organizations unlock the potential of young people to change their lives and world.

2013: Where we are today

SOME RECENT YEARLY RESULTS: 3,035 youth were able to stay in or complete

secondary school.

2,090 youth received 21st century skills, such as

computer and international languages.

4,260 youth increased their “social capital,”

providing a safety net of friends or adult mentors.

8,495 youth learned how to protect their health,

including how to prevent pregnancy and HIV.

2,845 youths’ prospects for employment

increased due to improved skills and links to the

job market.

350 youth received support and training to launch

micro-businesses.

IN FY13:

• $2,029,500 awarded• 61 grants• 11 new grantee partners• 50 renewal grants• Mean annual grant size: $28,000

To Date: 128,000+ youth directly impacted; 540,000+ lives “touched”

We strategically focus on at-risk young people in emerging market countries to close opportunity gaps.

WHY INVESTING IN YOUTH MAKES SENSE:Strong social networks prevent school

drop-out, chronic absenteeism, drug and

alcohol abuse and “risky” behavior.

Over 70% of all preventable deaths globally

result from health-related patterns and

behaviors that began during adolescence.

1 extra year of schooling boosts girls’

eventual wages by 10-20% and boys by

5-15%.

40% of the world’s unemployed are under 25

= 75 million.
