From the Deputy Principal

Pleasingly, I reflect on the first 5 weeks of school and feel optimistic about all that has been achieved in such a short period of timeat the College. As we have continued to embark on the Collaborative Impact Program, a process that enhances our teachingcapacity in order to further engage all learners into authentic, relevant and collaborative learning, learning and teaching at Kolbehas continued to be innovative, significant and positively challenging. In addition, many students have represented the Collegeproudly in a number of events, ranging from sporting competitions to experiential learning. There has been a vibrant and positivefeeling about House Spirit, with an increase in attendance during PC, engagement of students in the SenseAbility program duringextended PC, good attendance at the Swimming Carnival and lots of participation in the SACCSS Competition. Our Senior BoysBasketball and Volleyball Teams won the championship for their respective divisions and the Girls Tennis Team also won thepremiership. Well done to the players and their coaches.

As mentioned in the previous Newsletter, most students have continued to proceed on their learning journeys by raising the barand making the most of the opportunities offered to them. I again commend the efforts made by the College staff and the responseof students in their living of our three underpinning values in “faith, compassion, and courage”.

Please take note of the following information:

Attendance at compulsory College eventsParents please be advised that College carnivals, Feast days and full school assemblies are compulsory College activities and unlessnotified via CareMonkey or text message, all students are required to attend on the day.

Unfortunately, many families chose to allow their son or daughter to remain at home on the days of the Senior and JuniorSwimming Carnivals last week. Those students whose absence was unresolved, as in no contact from home was made or medicalcertificate provided, have all received a letter from either myself or Mr McClaer (Director of Students – Senior School) outlining theCollege expectations regarding attendance at days such as these. Parents are asked to please read these letters and should contactMain Reception with any further inquiries.

The Athletics Carnival will take place on Thursday 19 April, 2018. This is also a compulsory event and it is expected that all studentswill be in attendance and will make an effort to participate on the day. Any further unexplained absences from College events willbe followed up with students and a meeting may be required with families and the Directors of Students or Deputy Principal todiscuss this matter further.

Sport & HPE Uniform:A continued reminder that students are only permitted to wear their Sport uniform on the following days when students have thefollowing classes timetabled:

Heath & PE

Sport

IMP

LEAD

Students should not be wearing their Sport uniform on days when they do not have one of these classes. Parents are asked tosupport the College in enforcing this aspect of the uniform policy. Please contact your child’s Learning Advisor if you have anyquestions regarding the uniform.

Contacting Students During the School DayAs mentioned in previous communication, at times, parents need to contact their child during the course of a school day. In theevent that you need to have an urgent message delivered to your child please ring reception on 8339 3060. Staff in reception willtake the message, and then if urgent, pass it onto your child at an opportune time. Students will not be removed from lessons totake a phone call, nor will lessons be interrupted to deliver messages. The message needs to be of an urgent nature.

Drop offs and pick upsThe two entries to the College are very busy during school drop off and pick up. To avoid the possibility of accidents, I ask that youare careful when driving near the College once you have dropped off your child, or after picking them up.

Please consider the following guidelines:

Use the drop off bays only.

The gate at the North entry is to be closed between 8.20 and 8.40 each morning so please use the South Gate if you wish todrop off your child inside the College.

Under no circumstances can cars perform U-Turns. This action poses a great danger to pedestrians.

Please ensure that your child uses the designated crossing area to walk across the road.

Please be patient and maintain the 40KM per hour maximum speed limit when travelling around the area.

Please ensure to support the College in these requirements so that your child is safe at all times.

Use of the ICT Device at home (Laptop)As required by the agreement between the College and all families, students are required to have their laptops fully charged eachmorning. Laptops are essential tools for learning, and it is necessary that such are available throughout the day.

It is also important that the laptops are only used for the purpose of learning when at home. Laptops should not be used for gamingpurposes or as Social Media Communication devices. Please ensure to monitor the use of the device at home, and restrict your childfrom using it late at night. The impact that poor use may have on the health of the child is negative.

Additionally, I suggest that you consider reading the agreement with your child, and make use of the following resources.

1. The following is a fact sheet about the use of the Internet amongst young people in Australia. This is very tellinginformation about the world we live in, and the changes that technology are having on society in general:

2. The next article is a concerning report on the growing problem that the internet poses on the human mind. ObsessiveInternet use is now considered an addiction, and as such, is continually showing the possible dangers. This is may be thecase for some students who seem to overuse their device without limitations imposed on them:

ECSI Survey 2018All parents will be receiving an invitation via Caremonkey to participate in the Enhancing Catholic Schools Identity Survey. It hasbeen three years since our first round and the new survey data will help guide and direct future planning for the Faith Developmentof our College. The survey will be available to complete until Friday 27 April and all answers are anonymous. Please watch out forthe Caremonkey invitation that will have all the details you will need to complete this survey. Thank you for helping us with thisproject.

Australian Catholics Magazine OnlineThis year our College has subscribed to the Australian Catholics Magazine and every student will be creating an account using theirschool email address.

We are inviting you the parents and care-givers to also access this great resource using your child’s email address.

Part of our role as Religious Educators in a Catholic School is not only teaching the Curriculum content but also promoting theCatholic Faith whenever we get the chance- showing the students the Church at work in the world and alerting our students toevents and activities that are happening around us! Giving them alternatives to the news around them by offering them the GoodNews! It is even better if the students see this from home as well and engaging with Australian Catholics magazine is one way of achievingthis partnership.

Finally, from me, a prayer for parents and care-givers:We pray for our parents and guardians who are seeking to share the treasure of faith with their children. May the example of theirgospel living give their children life-long inspiration. Amen.
