Program Supported with 2005 Program:
The T.R.I.P. (Trauma and Related Injury Prevention) ProgramThe TRIP program provides vital safety information to kids and families throughout the year. The information is practical and continually improves the lives of thousands of kids and families in the metro Detroit area.
Joann Moss, the Wayne County coordinator for the TRIP program, taught a class on motor vehicle safety to the Boys & Girls clubs in June, 2005. The attendees were primarily children aged 6-8 years. The focus of the lesson was the importance of booster seats, the need for children to ride in the back seat of the car and why everyone should always wear a seat belt in the car.
Joann was present when some of the parents came to pick up their children. Several of the kids chose to ride in the back seats even though their parents opened the front door for them to get into the car. One 7 year old girl, named Lakeshia actually got angry with her mom in the parking lot when the adults in the car wouldn’t wear their seat belts. She made such a scene, her mom and aunt finally put on their seat belts. On the way home, the family was involved in a car accident. Thanks to the safety information they had just received and implemented, no one was injured.
