23 Sport TUESDAY DECEMBER 13 2016 Kohli: Nothing on a platter England missed Swann and Panesar I NDIA’S unassailable 3-0 lead over Eng- land has not been achieved as comfort- ably as it might appear against quality opposition, captain Virat Kohli said yes- terday. India thrashed England by an innings and 36 runs just over half an hour into the final day at the Wankhede Stadium to clinch the series with a match to spare. England were the last team to win a Test series in India, 2-1 four years ago, and they made a strong start in the drawn Test in Rajkot this time round. “I don’t think it’s been easy. We have been put under pressure many times. I think I would give my team a lot of credit for bouncing back from those tough situations,” Kohli told reporters. “We haven’t got anything on the platter. We have had to work hard for it and it’s been a result of con- stant pressure that we have forced the opposition to make mistakes.” Trailing 2-0 in the series, England posted 400 in their first innings in Mumbai and had the hosts, ranked number one in the world, in trouble by reducing them to 307/6. But man of the match Kohli hit 235 to rescue his team and led them to a massive first-innings total of 631. “With the bat as well we have shown really good character to come back into the game, showing enough patience, more than the opposition,” the 28-year-old said, adding it was the best out of his five series wins as captain. “No series win is easy, especially not this one, we know England is a quality test side and we knew that they will try to bounce back. “Even in this game after being 2-0 down, they put 400 runs in the first innings. This is not a team that will throw in the towel. We were tested but we came out on top.” It was the fifth consecutive series win for India following triumphs in Sri Lanka and the West Indies, and home victories over the Proteas and New Zealand. Kohli was pleased with the unselfishness of his teammates. “A lot of the times, you have an hour in the Test match where you can take the game away and you are still not willing to go for it because you are close to your milestone or things like that,” he said. “These are the things that we have gotten out of our system completely.” Meanwhile, England no longer have the world class spin options available to them that they enjoyed when they stunned India in 2012, captain Alastair Cook said. Four years ago spinners Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar enjoyed the conditions, and were ably supported by prolific wicket-taking paceman James Anderson. During that series, Panesar took 11 wickets at the Wankhede Stadium while Swann picked up eight more to help England thrash India by 10 wickets. However, leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who is Eng- land’s highest wicket-taker in the ongoing series with 22 victims, and off-spinner Moeen Ali have failed to match those performances. “No disrespect to Mo and Rash but Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar were world class bowl- ers in 2012,” Cook told reporters. “In these condi- tions you need that. “Mo and Rash have bowled well but they are not yet in that league ... I do not mean that disre- spectfully at all and that is why we need a slightly different balance to the side. “In 2012, we could play the four bowlers, two seamers and two spinners, but in this side we need more options.” Cook admitted England had erred by picking an extra seamer in Jake Ball while overlooking Gareth Batty as the pitch had nothing in it for the quicker bowlers. “Here we knew it was going to spin,” Cook said. “But one thing we have strength in depth in is our seamers and we can get control with our seamers if it is not spinning a huge amount. “Generally here in Mumbai it spins slightly later on in the game but it spun pretty much from ball one and last time in 2012 it didn’t and the pitch looked exactly the same.” Cook was also left to rue England’s failure to take the chances that came their way. Jonny Bairstow missed a stumping opportunity of Murali Vijay on 45, while Rashid dropped a difficult return catch from Kohli on 68 and Joe Root also put down Jayant Yadav at slip on eight. “We missed three good chances to take wickets and they made us pay,” Cook said. “Missing Kohli, missing Vijay and Yadav cost us dearly. “It is just frustrating. To beat India in these conditions you have to play the perfect game and we haven’t managed to do that.” – Reuters THAT’S A STUMP FOR MY COLLECTION: India captain Virat Kohli celebrates the series win in Mumbai yesterday. Kohli: Nothing on a platterEngland missed Swann and Panesar

INDIA’S unassailable 3-0 lead over Eng-land has not been achieved as comfort-ably as it might appear against quality opposition, captain Virat Kohli said yes-terday.

We have had to work hard for it and it’s been a result of con-stant pressure that we have forced the opposition to make mistakes.”

Trailing 2-0 in the series, England posted 400 in their first innings in Mumbai and had the hosts, ranked number one in the world, in trouble by reducing them to 307/6.

We were tested but we came out on top.”

It was the fifth consecutive series win for India following triumphs in Sri Lanka and the West Indies, and home victories over the Proteas and New Zealand.

Kohli was pleased with the unselfishness of his teammates.

“A lot of the times, you have an hour in the Test match where you can take the game away and you are still not willing to go for it because you are close to your milestone or things like that,” he said.

“These are the things that we have gotten out of our system completely.”

Meanwhile, England no longer have the world class spin options available to them that they enjoyed when they stunned India in 2012, captain Alastair Cook said.

However, leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who is Eng-land’s highest wicket-taker in the ongoing series with 22 victims, and off-spinner Moeen Ali have failed to match those performances.

“No disrespect to Mo and Rash but Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar were world class bowl-ers in 2012,” Cook told reporters. “In these condi-tions you need that.

“Mo and Rash have bowled well but they are not yet in that league ... I do not mean that disre-spectfully at all and that is why we need a slightly different balance to the side.

“In 2012, we could play the four bowlers, two seamers and two spinners, but in this side we need more options.”

Cook admitted England had erred by picking an extra seamer in Jake Ball while overlooking Gareth Batty as the pitch had nothing in it for the quicker bowlers.

“Here we knew it was going to spin,” Cook said. “But one thing we have strength in depth in is our seamers and we can get control with our seamers if it is not spinning a huge amount.

“Generally here in Mumbai it spins slightly later on in the game but it spun pretty much from ball one and last time in 2012 it didn’t and the pitch looked exactly the same.”

Cook was also left to rue England’s failure to take the chances that came their way.

To beat India in these conditions you have to play the perfect game and we haven’t managed to do that.” – Reuters

Suspended Kyrgios finds time to relax a bitAUSTRALIAN World No 13 Nick Kyrgios thinks his ATP-imposed suspension will stand him in good stead when he makes a push for the top 10 next season.

The 21-year-old rose to a career high ranking this year but his tour season ended with a $25,000 fine and a two-month ban from the ATP for not trying in a match at the Shanghai Masters.

The ban was reduced to three weeks after he agreed to see a sports psychologist.

“The ATP wanted me to see a psychologist to help me out and I’ve been doing that,” Kyrgios told Fox Sports after helping the Singapore Slam-mers to the Indian Premier League Tennis title in

Hyderabad on Sunday. “It’s actually been good, just relaxing a little

bit, spending more time with my family and my girlfriend as well. So the suspension, one way to look at it, is getting more time off with the people you love and I’ve been training as well, so it’s set me up in good stead for 2017.

“Obviously I wouldn’t have wanted to get sus-pended but it gave me time to think about and analyse what I’ve got to get better at.”
