“where all people are accepted and loved.”
How did we arrive at the end of 2017 so quickly? I know, I know…..time is time, and one
year is no “quicker” than another. I get that. However, it sure feels like 2017 flew by me at an
unprecedented speed! Now what I am about to say can’t be empirically proven, but I attribute
the rapidity of 2017 to a combination of several incredible events that took place in my life (a
wedding, a honeymoon, a graduation, a trip to Europe, a college-bound son, etc…) alongside
all the things that I MEANT to accomplish in 2017 but left undone. So, like many others, I sit
here at the cusp of a new year asking the age-old question, “Where did the time go?”
Well……I have decided to approach 2018 from a different perspective. Instead of making an
unrealistic list of all the things I desire to accomplish in the new year (because I will only
arrive at the end of 2018 and wonder where the time has gone), I’ve decided to simply live a
better life. I want my life story to be a good one, a better one, maybe even a great one! I long
for my life to matter. I want the story of Bradley Hyde to be a good one!
You know that everyone loves a good story. It’s what drives us to stay up longer at night
than we intended, binge watching a television series or flipping the pages of a book that we
simply can’t put down. There’s something about a good story, no matter what the genre might
be, that attracts us. As for us, the truth is that we’re all living a story right now. For some of us,
we’re in a season of drama. For others, it may be a romantic comedy. And still others, it may
be adventure. But regardless of the current genre of our life, we’re all in the middle of our
stories. Over the next several weeks, we’re going to look at how Jesus’ promise of “life to the
fullest” plays out in each one of our life stories. It’s important to understand both the direction
and destination our lives are moving. And when we begin to understand that Jesus offers us a
joy greater than any happiness we can find here on earth, then we can begin to live a full life!
In the months of January and February, we are going to look at the story of our lives and
how those stories might be better seen through the life Jesus offers His followers. Ultimately,
when we understand our part in God’s story, we can better understand our own story. So, join
me on Sundays here at Kodak U.M.C. as we start 2018 looking for a way to live a better life
story. And if you want to go deeper in this journey, I invite you to join us in the Gathering
area on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 beginning January 10 for one hour as we go a little deeper
into what it might look like to live a better life. The study will conclude on Wednesday,
February 14 followed by an Ash Wednesday service. I look forward to spending this time with
you all during the months of January and February.
Grace & Peace

Jason & Carrie Hawkins
Gabriel and Joshua
Jason and Carrie reside in the Kodak community
with their two sons, Gabriel and Joshua. Joshua is a
first grader, and Gabriel is a third-grade student at
Catlettsburg Elementary School.
The pair claim ties both in Kentucky and
Tennessee. Carrie graduated from Ashbury College and
was born in Kentucky; however, Tennessee has been
home since she was fifteen months old. Jason is from
Kentucky and attended a family reunion with Carrie’s
cousin. The match was made, and Tennessee is now
home to both.
During the day, Jason is an employee in the
business area of America’s Home Place Corporation.
Carrie is the Office Administrator for her mother, Vicki Moore, MD. Both are very busy, yet
well-grounded in their love of family. They live from their Christian core values and have a
strong commitment to Christ and his work.
Golfing is a family enjoyment. Jason is a golfer, and the two boys are quickly picking up
the sport. You could have found Jason participating in our church golf competition this past
Spring.
Jason and Carrie visited other churches before joining at Kodak United Methodist
Church. They both voiced their main reason for coming to Kodak was Pastor Brad. Carrie
appreciated how the sermons make you think, as well as, lead the heart in worship. Jason also
finds this faith community to be very friendly and open.
Jason Hawkins is part of our Security Team. This family expresses a strong commitment
to our Lord and the purposes of our church. We are a stronger church because they are a part of
us.
We welcome this young family to Kodak.
KODAK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
FORMATION OF A SENIOR ADULT MINISTRY TEAM
From: David Coulter Pastor-For Senior Adult Ministry
Psalm 92:12-14
The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the
house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green.
First Meeting: 12 noon January 10, 2018 at the church. Everyone, please bring your own
sack lunch, and we will put the coffee on.
Our first business will be to develop a Mission as we look at our Senior Adult Ministry. Anyone
interested in helping on this team is urged to contact David Coulter at [email protected] or
call him at home 865.446.4539.

Stephen Ministry By Judy Witucki
Many times, life has been likened to a game of cards. Sometimes you get dealt a good hand, and all goes well. But sometimes you get dealt a “bad hand”. Loss of a loved one, tragedy, loss of a job, relocation, divorce, or health issues that keep you from enjoying life as you once knew it. The list can go on and on. What will you do? Will you throw your cards on the table, and say “I quit”, or “life’s not fair”, or will you stay in the game, and skillfully play the hand that’s been dealt you? That’s where Stephen Ministry comes in. When life has dealt you a crummy hand, a Stephen Minister can walk along beside you. You can share your frustration, your anger, your hurt, and all the other emotions you experience as you journey through this season in life, and everything is strictly confidential. No, we can’t wave a magic
wand, and make it all go away, only GOD can do the healing. It’s not easy, and it takes time, but you don’t have to go through this experience alone. If you would like a Stephen Minister, or know someone who could benefit from one, or you would like to become a part of Stephen Ministry, contact Jeanna Cole, Angie Shepherd, or Pastor Brad Hyde, and they will get you connected.
Andrew Blake Wilson
Blake, the son of Drew and Amanda Wilson, is a 7th grader
at Sevier County Middle School. This young man has been at Kodak
Church since he was eight years old when his family first came to
Kodak Church.
Blake has the honor of being the “big brother” to his two
younger sisters. He also has a wonderful friend named Oscar, a
boxer-lab mix who has a special place in the family. This dog is a
true friend, and Blake treats him royally.
Youth group was named as his favorite part of church. The
youth retreats and meetings are important to Blake. He finds
Robert, the Youth Minister, to always be available. Of course, he
thinks the people at Kodak Church are nice and friendly. Kodak
Church is home to this young man.
Blake has served as an usher during the second service. I
also hear he is a trainee in the sound-computer room. What a joy it
is as we watch Blake grow into the man our God plans for him.
We welcome Blake as a member at Kodak United Methodist Church.
“where all people are accepted and loved.”
On November 19, 2017, Elaine
Lee, on behalf of Kodak
Methodist Women, presented
special mugs to Dick Suter and
Reaford Terry. These were
given in recognition of their
dedicated service to the
Wednesday Meals on Wheels
Program. These men, along with
many faithful volunteers, prepare
and deliver meals to dozens in our
community each week. We are
thankful for their dedication to
this ministry.
Coffee with the Pastor: Pastor Brad will be available for
coffee and conversations in the Prayer Tower from
10:15-11:00 a.m. Sundays in January. This is a time to talk
about life, faith, and what it looks like to follow Jesus here at
Kodak UMC. So, grab a coffee and come join Pastor Brad if
you want to join in the conversation.
Bible Study, “Live a Better Life,”
on Wednesdays in January, starting on Jan. 10th,
at 5:30 pm in the Gathering Area.
Come join Brad for this 6-week study.
Ash Wednesday Services, February 14, 2018

David Smith, “ShortStop”, Appalachian Trail Chaplain 2011-2012
David is from Knoxville and will present a program about the Appalachian Trail Chaplain
Ministry through the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. The immediate
Trail Chaplain just completed the trail, and is a Licensed Local Pastor in the UMC.
KIDS CONNECTION
On Sunday, December 3rd, we enjoyed our 2nd Family Night at Kodak Church with a multi-generational congregation of around 75 people. An angel, innkeeper, candy maker, and star presented the Christmas story to us. After-wards, families made a Christmas nativity craft, ornaments, and a sweet treat to give away as they were enjoying cookies and milk. It was a wonderful start to the Christmas season. Plans are already underway for our next Family Night at Kodak. Our next event will be painting a canvas to take home. (For those of us who are not talented artists, there will be assistance available.) Due to materials needed, an RSVP will be required to attend, so be on the lookout for more details about dates and times.
SAVE THE DATE:
June 18-22, 2018 - Join me for a week of fun, laughter, sharing, and giving to children of the church and the community as we present our 2018 VBS – Shipwrecked. Last year we had the opportunity to share the love of Jesus with 152 children, and of those 45 children made a first time decision or rededicated their lives to Jesus. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of something this life changing!! An event likes this takes lots of dedicated servants. Last year a total of 84 volunteers make this week special for the kids. Please pray fully consider how you would like to serve this summer. We will have opportunities for volunteers to be crew leaders (take children from station to station during the evening), station leaders (lead a particular station for the evening), or specialty roles (registration, food service, media, etc.). With your involvement, I know this year will be the best VBS ever!
