Inorganic PigmentsIron oxides (Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) lack a carbon molecule andare therefore "inorganic". Iron oxides in nature (dirt) areoften combined with toxic metals like lead, arsenic, mercury, antimony and selenium. The FDA has regulated cosmeticcolorants so the level of toxic metal present are below certainpercentages in order to be used safely.
Synthetic iron oxides are manufactured to eliminate the con-tamination of naturally occurring iron oxides. These metalsare basically inert, although iron oxide blacks (magnetite) dohave magnetic properties. Iron oxides are a softer metal thantitanium dioxide.Iron oxide molecules are crystals and are indifferent shapes. Some are spherical, others are rhomboidsand yet others look like a pencil shaped crystal (long andnarrow). Ultraviolet light can affect the crystalline structureand result in loss of color activity. Light fastness or"reflectance" describes a particle's ability to reflect light at acertain wavelength. Most synthetic iron oxides are manufac-tured in the visible light spectrum and have maintain goodreflectance. Examples of the endurance of iron oxides are thecave paintings which have endured thousands of years indarkness.
Particle SizeIt is a mistaken belief that pigment particles are 6 microns orgreater. The fact is that the average iron oxide particle size isless than one micron. However, the particles are attracted toeach other and form "agglomerates". When the particles aremeasured in a suspension it is common to get a particle sizemeasurement of 1-20 microns because the agglomerates arebeing measured in addition to the individual particles.Although iron oxides are inorganic, they are often dispersedin glycerin or alcohol which are organic substances.
Carbon BlackCommon in inks used for tattooing, the carbon black particleis without shape or "amorphous" and the size is a tiny .03microns. This means it is from 10-20 times smaller in sizethan an iron oxide pigment particle. My personal belief isthat this ultra-small size is why we will often see migrationor "bleeding" of pigment into surrounding tissues when usingcarbon black based inks.
An example of carbon black ink is HIGGINS India Ink.Because lead is no longer legal in the U.S. as an additive tocarbon black, even India Ink or Pelikan Ink have lost their"black blackness". Carbon black is illegal for use in cosmet-
ics in the United States because of a case of blindness thatresulted from its use in mascara. Carbon black is legal inother countries, and is used widely in the US by tattooists.Although it is safe to use when alcohol is present to preventinfections, the law remains to be changed in the U.S.
SolubilityBy definition, a pigment is a particle and NOT soluble insolution. If a colorant dissolves in solution then it becomes adye. Various dispersal agents such as glycerin, ethyl alcohol,Witch Hazel, water, castor oil, propylene glycol and othersare used to keep the particles from forming clumps.Rememberthat these particles are weakly attracted to each other.
OrganicMany colorant molecules are organic because they contain acarbon molecule. You don't have to look any further thanyour dinner table to find examples of organic colors.Spinach, carrots, tomatoes, beets and parsley are all "organ-ic" colors. We eat these products every day and they arevery safe. Rarely organic colors such as "coal tar" have beendetermined to have undesirable effects including causing can-cer. But this is an exception. Therefore, whether a color isorganic or inorganic does not determine the safety of thatcolor. One manufacturer feels strongly FOR organic pig-ments and yet another feels strongly FOR iron oxides. Justremember that "bright" colors are organic in origin andearth colors are inorganic. Carmine is a naturally occurringred pigment from cochineal extract (beetles) in SouthAmerica. It is added to some iron oxide pigment lip colors.KolorSource™ pigments use KOSHER glycerin or propyleneglycol for peace of mind.
Properties of pigments The smaller apigment becomes the more translucent it becomes. This istrue of even the most opaque pigment, titanium dioxide.Science is making "nano particles" which are a thousandtimes smaller than "micron-sized" particles. The larger theparticle size the more light it will reflect and the more opaqueit will become.
Adverse EffectsIron oxides contain nickel and a large percentage of the pop-ulation tested is allergic to nickel (17.9%). Tattooneedles, including surgical grade stainless steel needles, con-tain nickel (8.2%). So sensitivity to pigments can and doesoccur, even to iron oxides. The fact that organic colorants do
not contain nickel is good. However, the inert iron oxides arevery safe despite the presence of nickel. Organic pigmentscan cause severe allergic reactions and granulomas that aredifficult to treat. Fortunately, this is rare. Most adverseeffects come from sensitivity to antibiotic ointments appliedafter the permanent cosmetic procedure.
Iron Oxide ColorsIn nature, iron oxides exist in reds, yellows, blacks, ochre, umbre and burnt umber. Synthetic iron oxides come in sever-al shades of red, yellow and black. A pigment has both a"top tone" and an "undertone". So in addition to dealingwith the undertones in the client's skin, you must take intoaccount the "undertone" in the pigment.
Titanium DioxideCompared to iron oxides, titanium dioxide is very opaque. However, although white in appearance, it also has under-tones (DuPont) which may be blue on the light spectrum insome cases. It is often mixed with blacks, reds and yellows tolighten (tint) the original hue (color) of the cosmetic color.
Loss of color over timea) Exposure to sunlight or UV lightb) Body breaks down foreign bodies when possible and
eliminates themc) Use of glycolics, Retin-A and other new products for
wrinkle treatments are having an adverse effect on permanentmakeup.
There are advantages to either inorganic or organic col-orants. Allergic reactions to red pigments used in tattoos were actu-ally allergic reactions to the Yellow "Cadmium sulfide" addedto the reds. Often times a claim of an "allergic reaction" ismade after lip color when in fact the culprit was from over-working the lips with the needles. Bumps will occur in thiscase. This should NOT be mistakenly diagnosed as an aller-gic reaction. A tiny tissue “punch” biopsy is needed to con-firm ANY suspected allergic reaction. The treatment forallergic reactions ranges from overtattooing with salt wateror Kenalog,to topical or systemic steroids to laser removalattempts. Injections of steroids locally usually wear off andthe reaction will flare again. Tattooing with a dry needle anddabbing on Kenalog 1% cream helps too.

Use the right needle (and machine) for the job. As you can see from this preliminary study, the #5 Flat in the Midas is the best for brow hairstrokes. For eyeliner and lipcolor, the #3 FLAT
(or round if you prefer) is the best needle. Velvet Needles® carry more color faster.

We wanted to know how much the Colorburst™ pigments would fade duringhealing. So a local tattoo artist used six KolorSource™ pigments to add color
to an old ink tattoo on his leg. All reds, yellows and orange held well and stayedthe same color as day one.

Awesome O8938 Natural lipcolor with brown warm undertone. No pink. It’s the color you want to use
if you don’t want pink lips. Awesome + Ginger + Nude Lips give MOST nat. lipcolor.
Beets Me! T 9155Profoundly rich, deep red color that can only be described as “beet-red”! My 78 y/o mother named this color in a heartbeat when she saw it.
Berry Cool T 8941Med. Cool true Red. Transluscent. Deep pink when healed. Add 1/8-1/4 Nude or Whisper Mix to lighten to a 3 yr. old baby’s lip color.
Crimson O 9141Never turns blue. It turns light orange. Mix 50/50 with Salmon Paté according toHelen (Snow) for pleasing color.
Girls Night Out! T9167 Go ahead and kick up your heals with this profoundly dark, translucent lipcolor. Add
a little Nude for opacity or Bubblegum to lighten. “Lips night out!”
Hoochie Mama O 8946Seinfeld coined the “hoochie mama” term according to Liza Lawrence. This colorreminds you of someone with lips that never end. Luscious red lips.
Hula Girl O 9177Rich velvety deep balance of warmth and cool in brown tones with mauve. A strongyet natural appearing color for lips that need definition and youthfulness.
Kiss Me! O 9134This is a profoundly powerful, dense warm rose color (on steroids). Will mauve outover normal lip tones.
Naturelle9196 In progress
Pomegranate O 8947A medium Blue/Pink. Think fruity (rhubarb). Opaque.
Poppy O 8948Powerful, balance of cool and warm reds with just enough yellow to stay true. Usealone or add Canary to brighten or Lip Mix to add mauve. Opaque
Red Pepper T 8942Brighter Red with Orange hues. Red hot pepper. Translucent
Sassy O 9197Dark “sassy” burgundy tones. Packed full of colors so a word of caution to use spar-ingly or mix with Salmon Paté or perhaps Hawaiian Flesh to tone down.Or Bubblegum.
Salmon Pate O 8945A Creamy Pink. Opaque. Beautiful added to Wine Cooler 50/50.
Scarlet Kiss T8943 Brighter Red with Orange hues. Red hot pepper. Translucent.
Very Berry T8940 Deep Cool Red Boysenberry. I use it in all my lipcolors. Mix with Nude Lip Mix 1/4
for deep mauve. I always add Nude Lip or Bubblegum (a few drops) to add opacity.
Wine Cooler O8944 Deep Blue Pink. Fuschia. Lighten with white pigment. Heals bright pink. Opaque.
Mix 50/50 with Salmon Paté for pretty color.
O=Opaque T=Transparent
If you don’t remember anything else, please remember to alwaysshake and stir your pigments. Yes, Shake AND Stir! Both ofthem. Forget the toothpick approach. Here’s why:
A poorly mixed pigment will give you uneven results. You’llhave problems getting in the color so you will tend to “overwork”the area trying so hard to do a good job. The result? You’ll actu-ally be creating tissue damage that will cause bleeding and scab-bing and you’ll have very little color left after the healing period.
Mixing colors together isn’t done evenly enough with a toothpick.Put your mini-mixer “stirrer” in the bottom of your pigment cupbefore you turn it on. Then stir away with the tip making circlesaround the bottom of the pigment cup. Always have the tip touch-ing the bottom of the pigment cup to prevent “flying” colors.
And by all means don’t let your colors dry out. Some pigmentscontain a lot of alcohol and it evaoporates quickly once it is inyour pigment cup. This results in “caking” of the dried pigment inbetween your needles. When your needles are clogged with dry
pigment they can’t carry color intothe skin. Going deeper or harderto get in the color won’t workwhen your needles are full of driedpigment.
Solution? Run your needles in a cupof water to get out the caked pigment, then add Scatter to your color mixtureand be sure to stir it thoroughly withyour mini-mixer.
You’ll be glad youdid! Shake!Stir! Shake!Stir!

Usage: A thing is translucent (T) when it merely admits the passage of light, without enabling us to distinguish the color andoutline of objects through it; it is transparent when we can clearly discern objects placed on the other side of it. Ground glass
is translucent while glass, water, etc., are transparent. (O)Opaque objects block the passage of light. I’ve noticed over theyears that organic pigments behave totally different in the skin than the iron oxides. Organics are a much more delicate pig-ment of a finer particle size and they are generally more translucent than the oxides. So you need to punch up the color with
something like Lip Mix or Bubblegum or an iron oxide.
