Downton Abbey Holiday Preview EventOn December 16, Silver Circle and Legacy Society Members were the first in northern Nevada to experience the television event of 2014 during the KNPB Holiday Silver Circle and Legacy Society event hosted by the Eldorado Hotel Casino. Refreshments, including a gin tasting, and passed hors d’oeuvres were enjoyed by all at Bubinga Lounge inside the Eldorado. After the reception, guests filled the Eldorado Showroom and were treated to the much anticipated sneak peak of the first hour of Downton Abbey Season 4.

Local!This month KNPB will debut installments of two local programs that continue our

commitment to serve our region and connect our community.Stewards of the Rangeland IV will be seen for the first time Thursday evening February

6 at 8pm. This is the 4th and latest installment of the Stewards of the Rangeland series that addresses the critical issues faced by Nevada’s farmers and ranchers…issues that affect not only them but the economy of our entire state. Produced and hosted by Dennis & Gabe Golden, Stewards of the Rangeland has the distinction of having earned more awards than any local series in KNPB’s 30 year history: 3 Telly Awards and 2 International Communicator awards! While we do not produce these programs with the intention of winning awards, they are a measure of our success.

Another award winning series, Wild Nevada, has produced a one hour special that will be seen Thursday night February 13 at 8pm. Hosts Chris Orr and Dave Santina hit the trail again to take us to intriguing sites within a day’s drive in the Silver State. Wild Nevada is seen Saturdays at 3pm on KNPB; this special is an enjoyable extension of that series. And coming up Saturday March 1, KNPB will again broadcast the Nevada High School boys and girls basketball championships live from Mackay Arena.

When we talk about local programming, we of course include our weekly program A Conversation. Brent Boynton talks with the many fascinating people who live here or visit our region. Brent also hosts our quarterly Open Lines town hall broadcasts that take a deeper dive into issues affecting our region. Local programs like Poetry Out Loud, the Holland Project’s 3 Minute Film Festival, Pylon Chasers, Legends of the Lake, You’ll Always Be With Me, Reno Historic Races, House With a History, Living in the Big Empty and the Emmy-nominated The Work of Art not only tell compelling stories of our area, they present a more positive view of our region than what is typically available in commercial media. All reflect the high journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness and responsible reporting that are the hallmarks of KNPB and PBS; and are increasingly rare in today’s media world.

These programs and series are funded by local companies, foundations and of course, individual donors who understand the value and importance of this work. All of us can take justifiable pride in these programs that consistently serve our region and connect our community.
