Knowing When to Use Ce/C versus Il/Elle

Il/elle are subject pronouns that are most often used when referring to persons or things. We never give much

thought to how to translate those, because we think that he is always il, and she is always elle. For

example,Il habite prs dici. Elle a tudi. Il va danser. Elle chante bien.

However, in certain constructions, specifically with the verb tre, we need to take care to substitute ce in the

place ofil or elle.

Rule #1: If the word following tre is an adjective, then stick with il or elle for the subject.

Il est beau. Elle est gentille. Il est arrogant. Il nest pas bilingue.

Rule #2: If the word following tre is an unmodified term indicating nationality, occupation or religion, then

stick with il or elle for the subject (because in French, those particular structures are treated as adjectives).

Il est amricain. Elle est ingnieure. Il est musulman. Elle est pote. Il est astronaute. Elle est polonaise.

Rule #3: Now, heres the tricky part: If the word following tre is a modified noun -- with a determiner such as

un/une/des or when any adjective accompanies it (either before or after the noun) -- then switch to ce (c) for the

subject.

Cest un Amricain. Cest une ingnieure. Cest un homme daffaires distingu. Cest un crivain. Cest une

bonne actrice.

Additional situations where ce, rather than il or elle, is always used with tre:

With proper nouns. Cest Robert. Ctait Nol.

With pronouns. Cest le mien. Cest celui que je prfre.

With disjunctive pronouns Cest moi.

With dates Cest le quatorze juillet. Cest le premier juin. Ce sera vendredi.

With adjectives for non-specific subjects Cest formidable. Cest intressant.

Before a superlative. Ce seront les meilleurs de la classe. Cest le seul qui compte.
