Here at Parkland we bring in over 50,000 rooted cuttings of all the patented varieties of ornamental annuals we have come to

be known for. This covers over 500 varieties this year, of which over 80 are brand new varieties not seen here before. Many of the petunias with orange in their color make-up have gone by the wayside due to importation regulations, but that just made room for yet more new exciting varieties!

In addition to these new varieties, we are growing more plants in larger pots, hanging baskets and patio planters for instant beauty and easier gardening.

Also, we have acquired a new soil blend with coir chunks incorporated in it for better moisture retention in our hanging baskets and patio planters, as well as having MYKE incorporated in our soil blend for enhanced growth capabilities.

These are just a few of the additions to our plant selection.

BRING ON THE HEAT!

How hot are the hot peppers and how do they compare to our regular peppers? Pepper “Heat” (Capsacin) is measured in Scoville Units. The larger the number, the hotter the pepper. Capsacin is what is in peppers

that lends the heat to our favorite spicy foods. It is also the ingredient in pepper spray that is used to deter unwanted attacks, and in bird and animal repellents. Caution is advised when handling peppers, rated over 40 to 50,000 units; wear gloves and long-sleeved clothing. All peppers grow best in a sunny sheltered location that is very warm.

There has been an increasing demand recently for hotter peppers and we have found sources of them for you. We dare you to try them!

W e garden for various reasons. Some of us are after an economical source of healthy food.

To that end we plant all the usual staple varieties. But while we are achieving the desired result, many of us are looking to grow more than just the “same old, same old”. This produces a huge desire to search out the new, unusual and unique.

Also, our growing spaces are getting progressively smaller and our culinary palettes are growing more diverse. All of these desires are driving plant breeders and developers to produce many new varieties of edibles to fit the bill. Heritage and Heirloom varieties are being used to create hybrids with improved disease resistance, more compact growth, quicker maturing, heavier yielding along with unique colors and flavours not seen before and they’re still all Non-GMO. We at Parkland have the distinct pleasure of bringing in many of these, or growing them, for all our local gardening friends.

THE BEAUTY OF BEETS

By Christine

Albino BeetA beet variety from Holland. Completely white sweet roots with delicious flavour. This beet never stains! For best color and to avoid green tops, blanch roots by hilling up with soil.

Early Blood Turnip BeetGood all-purpose variety with dark red flesh that is sweet, crisp, and tender. Excellent market and home garden variety for summer and autumn use.

Burpee’s Golden BeetDual purpose beet for roots and greens. Roots are globe-shaped and bright orange, turning golden-yellow when cooked. Tender and mild even when large. Will not bleed like red beets. Sweet flavorful leaves

Beets are one of nature’s best foods. Grown for their leaves and roots they are a tasty option for the dinner table. These varieties are some of the best:

Chioggia BeetNoted for its alternating red-and-white concentric rings that resemble a bull’s-eye, this variety is wonderful for both fresh eating and pickling. It retains its markings if roasted whole and sliced just before serving.

Detroit Dark Red BeetGreat for canning and fresh eating, this variety is prolific and a good keeper, producing round, blood-red, 3”-diameter roots.

Yellow Intermediate Mangel BeetWhite and yellow ringed roots measure 4-6½” long and vary in shape. While mangel beets are larger than typical beets, you’ll find the sweet, juicy, and smooth textured.

Bulbs planted in spring (late April – Early May) will provide some of the most spectacular flowers to grace our summer gardens, as well as the most amazing cut-flowers. For many years Parkland has carried the

best selection of these in Central Alberta, and this year is no exception. Each year we have many totally new introductions to add to our gardens. Here are some of this year’s highlights:

HARDY BLUEBERRIES

FOR CENTRAL ALBERTA

NorthSky This is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub with an upright spreading habit of growth. The berries have a sweet taste and a firm texture.

NorthblueIs a small shrub that has an upright spreading habit. It produces clusters of blue round berries which are usually ready for picking in mid summer.

NorthcountryA hardy hybrid blueberry which forms a broad mounded shrub, excellent fall color and produces bumper crops of tasty sweet blue fruit in summer.

Northlandis a highbush blueberry, produces amazing crops of sweet dark blue fruit in early summer.

The North Series of blueberries are extremely hardy hybrid blueberries. The series has both high and low bush varieties and are excellent for fresh eating or cooking. All blueberries require

highly acidic soils, excellent drainage and a good mulch. Plant with plenty of peat moss. They prefer afternoon shade and good snow cover for wintering.

W hen most people think of bees it usually breaks down into two categories: love them, they are great; or terrible stinging pests. No matter

what category you fall into, we are just now coming to realize how important they are to us (humans). If we, the human race, expect to survive then we need to ensure the survival of bees and other pollinators.

The UN (United Nations) has declared May 20 as World Bee Day. So what does that mean? Whether or not you love bees they are an important factor in our food sources; everyone who enjoys their coffee in the morning needs to thank the bees. If you think about it, the economy relies on pollination because without it we don’t get our food crops.

In Alberta alone we have seven native varieties of bees. The honey bees that we see were brought in from Europe.

Native bees are:• Andrenid Bee• Bumble Bees (19 varieties alone)• Digger Bees• Halictid Bee• Leafcutting Bee• Plasterer Bee• Polymorphic Sweat Bee

These bees are often solitary and rarely sting if left alone. They generally only sting when they are threatened. We rely on them for our food production; when you consider pollinators are responsible for a third of our food production we need to start listening to bees.

What can you do to help?Plant bee friendly plants, minimize pesticides in

your landscape and bee aware.

HOW SWEET IT IS

let them pick their own.

When you can’t find the

www.parklandmall.ca

What are bee friendly plants?

An added bonus to this practice is that more butterflies and humming birds will also appear!

How to minimize pesticides in your landscapes:• Use hand removal of weeds or other non-chemical weed removal.• Use biodiversity in planting to discourage large damaging insect

populations.• Encourage spider populations to capture damaging insects.• Remember, we all want a beautiful world to be involved in; it is up to

us to make it that way.

GROWING CLEMATIS IN CENTRAL ALBERTA

It's bloomin' easy to have the yard you desire. Our prairie hardy, low-maintenance collection is available at Parkland Garden Centre while supplies last.

bloomineasyplants.com@bloomineasy

Hydrangea Moonrock™ from our award-winning Lavalamp™ Series

Clematis can be rewarding to grow and a beautiful addition to your garden. They are some of the very few blooming perennial vines that grow in our climate. Here are a few tips:

PLANTING CLEMATISIn colder climates where temperatures drop below 0°F

(-20°C) foundation planting and mulch are required to ensure a long life. Tricks to having success is heat on the top and shade on the roots. These conditions are necessary for the clematis to grow and thrive. Watch when you plant clematis that you are careful with the stems for they break easily and require extra care when transplanting. They prefer east or west exposures.

PRUNING CLEMATISGroup (C) is the only type of pruning group we

recommend in our climate. These varieties bloom only on the current year’s growth. Blooms commence in early summer and continue through to fall. Plants should be cut back in late April to two strong sets of buds on each stem as close to ground level as possible. This will provide a plant with blooms that start near ground level and continue to the top of the plant.

GROWOYAAn ancient form of localized plant irrigation, ollas (we call

them Oyas like they’re pronounced) are terracotta pots that you plant in your garden to save water, save time and make your growing easier. Terracotta is a porous material–and even more so when fired at a low temperature–allowing the water inside to seep out slowly through the walls to water your plants at the roots.

This makes Oyas a low tech, high efficiency, self watering system. Save a whole bunch of water (up to 70% water savings from surface watering), save your valuable time (water only once a week!) and grow easy (less weeds, less guesswork, better plants).

SUCCULENTS: PRACTICAL,

ADORABLE AND BEAUTIFUL

S ucculents are a group of plants that are characterized by their thick, fleshy leaves. They come in several different colors (even pink and blue!), they can be upright, rosette

shaped, or trailing. While some house plants require careful watering and maintenance, succulents are happiest when they are slightly dry and left alone to grow and fill whatever container they’re planted in. There are some hardy forms of succulents for our area but most are grown indoors or put outside for the summer only. To ensure the best color and growth provide at least a few hours of direct sun each day.

These plants have become popular because of their wide array of colors and fascinating shapes. When paired with a matching pot, these plants become a statement piece in any room. Succulents can be planted in almost any container: from low, shallow dishes, earthy terracotta pots, to retro tin containers. We recommend using cactus potting mix such as Pro-mix Premium Cactus mix for best results.

Parkland Garden Centre has an ample selection of succulents and all the supplies you’ll need for successful growing!

SALT WEST NATURAL SEA SALTS

S altwest Naturals produces hand-harvested Canadian sea salt and natural mineral sea soaks from the pristine coastal waters of Vancouver Island, Canada. Their products

are crafted in micro-batches using forced evaporation as well as efficient modern technology. With a sustainable touch, using reverse osmosis, the salinity of the seawater increases and fresh potable water is produced as a by-product. Steam Kettles boil water to make pure Rain Coast Flor de Sal flakes, delicious organic infused flavours, and our gourmet smoked sea salt.

Come and choose from a great selection at Parkland Garden Centre.

Season salmon with sweet Smokey Maple Sea Salt by rubbing 2 tsps per 100g.

Preheat grill to medium

Place salmon on grill for 10-20 minutes until salmon flakes. Cooking times will vary depending on thickness of Salmon.

W ith the widespread dissemination of science based nutrition information, our awareness about the value and benefits of plants as a source of protein has greatly

increased. The popularity of plant based eating is currently the strongest trend in health and food.

If you have watched documentaries like “Forks over knives” or the most recent “What the health” you should have come to the same conclusion. Even if you will never even think of going vegan, the truth is North Americans eat 50 to 75 per cent too much animal protein.

Most official nutrition organizations recommend a far more modest protein intake. The DRI (Dietary Reference Intake) is 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, or 0.36 grams per pound. This amounts to: 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man and 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman.

Consumption figures show we eat on average 80+ grams of protein a day. So not only do we eat too much meat, but we are missing out on important benefits from plant-based foods. Health-wise plants have the advantage of having fibre, phytonutrients and are in general alkalizing to the body.

With this in mind, I would recommend the following:

• Replace dairy milk with any plant based milk• Limit meat consumption to 2- 3 time a WEEK

(not a day)• Learn to grow your proteins in your own garden

Here’s some of the best vegetable proteins you should think of growing this summer.

Green beans: A protein powerhouse. One cup of green beans contains 12.48 grams of protein and over 16 grams of fibre.

Asparagus. The season for fresh asparagus is fleeting, so indulge in early spring. Asparagus has 2.16 grams of protein and only 20 calories for 6 spears. Roast it, steam it or grill it lightly.

Peas. A legume, one cup of peas contains almost 9 grams of protein. Steam peas or eat them fresh in salads or as a snack.

Kale. Known for its cancer-fighting abilities, kale has 2.47 grams of protein and only 27 calories per 1 cup serving.

Broccoli. Steamed broccoli has a mild flavour most people enjoy. It also has almost 2 grams of protein per ½ cup serving.

Pumpkin & Squash Seeds Growing pumpkins and squash is a lot of fun, and serves multiple purposes, especially if you grow small, easy-to-manage varieties. You can eat the vegetables’ flesh in soups, pies, and muffins, and then roast those seeds into crunchy, protein-rich snacks.

Sunflower seeds. Not only beautiful but each flower will carry between 1000 to 2000 of their the protein packed seeds

Corn. I love corn on the cob during peak season and usually turn this into a single meal by making 3 or 4 cobs, each providing 4 grams of protein.

Brussels sprouts.  This cool-season vegetable has almost 4 grams of protein per 1 cup serving. I roast mine with a little bit of olive oil and sea salt. Simple, fast and best “chips” you’ll ever have; yes even if you hate brussel sprouts.

Soybean (edamame). I kept this one last because soybeans have had such bad press, but If you grow them from heirloom seeds it is the best source of healthy & clean protein. You should really give this one a try. If you seed inside, find your warmest area of your garden and it is certainly possible to grow it in Alberta.

With all these possibilities, take advantage of your friendly specialists at Parkland Garden Center.

Oh! And remember to get some herbs to use in the fabulous dishes you will be making from your new crop!
