General building guidelines

Mixing concrete by handMixing by hand is hard work; therefore this technique is suitable only for small jobs or those that can be done in easy stages. To produce good concrete by hand you need to work carefully and methodically at a steady pace.

Materials and toolsSharp sand and coarse aggregate; water (7–10 litres of mains water per 15-litre bucket of cement); mixing platform; two shovels; two heavy-duty polythene buckets of identical size – about 15 litres capacity (keep one for cement only); bucket or watering can.

1. Set up a mixing platform (e.g. scrap shutter board/hardboard).2. Measure required bucket proportions of sand and coarse aggregates and tip them into a pile on the

platform.3. Use the cement shovel to fill the cement bucket to the top. Make sure the bucket is properly packed,

knock it two or three times as you fill it because the cement fluffs up as it is shovelled.4. Make a crater in the top of the pile of aggregate and tip in the bucket of cement.5. Use the aggregate shovel to mix the pile thoroughly, turning it over at least 3 times until it looks the

same colour throughout.6. Make a crater in the top of the mixed pile and gradually pour in about half the water. Turn the pile

again, moving dry material from the edge to the middle, until the water is well mixed in. Aim for an even colour and a dryish, crumbly consistency.

7. Continue adding and mixing in water until the pile is smooth and moist and at a consistency were you can ‘cut’ the mix with a spade and the cut holds its shape.

8. Test the consistency by slapping along the top of the pile with the back of the shovel. If water runs out readily it is too wet. Add a small amount of cement and aggregate (in the correct proportions) and mix again until you get it right.

Bricklaying: cutting a brickCutting a brick in half lengthways is tricky, as the brick is likely to fracture away from your marked line. The easiest way is with a brick bolster and club hammer.

Steps:1. Mark the cutting line round the brick, then score along it with the bolster, tapping it gently with a

hammer on all four sides.

2. With the brick laid frog down on sand or grass and evenly supported, rest the bolster in the scored line with its handle tilted slightly towards the waste end of the brick. Strike it firmly on all four faces, then strike it hard and it should break cleanly.

Handy hint:

Proper selection

Select ladder of proper duty rating to support

combined weight of user and materials. Ladders

are available with duty ratings of 95kg,

100kg, 115kg & 130kg. Inspect thoroughly

for missing or damaged components. Never

use a damaged ladder and never make

temporary repairs. Inspect thoroughly for loose

fasteners. Make sure all working parts are in

good working order, (lubricate if necessary).

Clean ladder of all foreign material (wet paint,

mud, snow, grease, oil, etc.). Destroy ladder if

damaged, worn or exposed to fire or chemicals.

Hang ladder on racks at intervals of 1,8m

for support. Never store materials on ladder.

Never drop or apply an impact load to ladder.

Securely support ladder in transit.
