SEVEN SORROWS OF MARY

Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary has focused for many years on seven particularly challenging events in her life.

1. There was a man in Jerusalem, Simeon, who was righteous and devout. The Holy Spirit revealed he would not see death before he had seen the Messi-ah. The parents of Jesus brought Him to the temple and performed the custom of the law. Simeon blessed them and said, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel and said to Mary (And you yourself a sword will pierce) so the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 2. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream to take the child and His mother to flee to Egypt to avoid be-ing killed by Herod who was in search for Jesus to destroy Him. This was certainly very stressing for Mary and Joseph. 3.Jesus and parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. They then left thinking Jesus was in the caravan they journeyed. He was lost to them and couldn’t find Him. They later found Him and Mary said, “Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. 4. In the fourth station of the way of the cross, we see Jesus meeting His mother as He carries His cross to Calvary. For a mother to see her child suffering this way, must have been most heart wrenching. 5. In John’s gospel we hear, standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary Magdala. When Jesus saw His mother, He said, “Woman behold your son.” This had to be agony for Mary to see her son this way. 6. The thirteenth station of the way of the cross we see Jesus taken down from the cross after He had died and placed in the arms of His mother (Pieta). What sorrow and sadness for Mary. 7. The fourteenth station of the way of the cross shows the body of Jesus accompanied by His disciples and His mother Mary who arranged it in the sepulcher. This is the finality when all seemed lost.

Reflecting on Mary’s sorrows helps us to understand what it means to persevere through life’s inevitable difficulties. Mary is our Lord’s first and most courageous, most faithful. Let us ask her to help us to be more like her. Viva Jesus! Deacon Terry

Dear Sir Knights: The Annual Ladies Luncheon is Coming up on the

28th of this month. This is when we show the ladies our

appreciation for all the work they do to help us. It will be

a fine French luncheon that I know the ladies will enjoy.

However in order to have it be a great affair we need

help. Four or five knights to do setup and 10 Sir Knights

in tuxedoes to serve and of course a cleanup crew. We

already have a fine cooking crew but I know they could

use help too. So I’m asking you to step up and help.

We will be having nominations for officer positions at the April meting. Start thinking

about where you can help serve the Assembly and your Sir Knights. If you don’t want to be an

officer, how about chairing an event or just be part of a committee.

Let us not forget the right to life Rosary the first Saturday of every month at 9:30 AM in

front of the Statue of Mary at Assumption Cemetery

Get involved! It’s a good thing to do starting this Lent.

ONE NATION UNDER GOD

If the living room in your home is on the far corner of your lot, the dining room on

another corner, the kitchen in the street and the bedrooms scattered all over the

neighborhood, your home wouldn’t be very livable would it?

It is the same with your life insurance. Unless the individual policies you own are fitted together to form a

balanced, well planned program, they cannot possibly do what they should for you.

Good money management calls for having the life insurance you own reviewed at regular intervals. In or-

der to be financially sound, you should know exactly what you want the insurance to do for you.

My review is not designed to get you to buy more life insurance. Instead, I work your ideas and ambitions

into a plan, and then organize it with your budget in a way that will bring you closer to your goals.

Call me today to schedule your review.

CHALICE PROGRAM

Our Assembly Chalice Program now has 47 active members Not all of the members have selected a

recipient for their Chalice after their passing.

Remember one of the Mottos of the first degree that we all went thru. That was: "Tempus Fugit,

Momento More" translates to "Time Flies, Remember Death". None of us will live forever and we don't

know when our passing will occur. Be prepared by selecting a Priest or other religious group that can cele-

brate a mass as your recipient of choice. You can change your selection whenever you want. As a minimum,

talk to your spouse or other family members to make them aware of the program. I have had to request that

the family select a recipient after a member's passing if he had not made a selection. Some have responded

to me "What's the Chalice Program?". Save your family from making that choice while still mourning your

passing. Plan ahead.

Patriotism SIX BOYS AND THIRTEEN HANDS

Each year I am hired to take the 8th grade class from Clinton, WI. to Washington D.C. to

videotape their trip. I enjoy visiting our Nation’s Capital and I always take special memories

back with me. This trip was very memorable.

On the last night we stopped at the Iwo Jima memorial. The bronze statue is the largest in

the world and depicts one of the most famous photographs in the world— that of the six

brave soldiers raising the American Flag at the top of Mt. Sirabachi on Iwo Jima, Japan, during

WWII. A man was at the base of the Statue and asked us where are you guys from? I told him

Wisconsin. Hey, I am a cheese head too. Come close and I will tell you a story. It was James

Bradley who was in Washington, D.C. to speak at the memorial the next day, and to say good-

bye to his dad, who had passed away.

He reverently began to speak. My name is James Bradley and I’m from Antigo, Wi. My dad

is on that statue, and I wrote a book called ‘Flags of Our Fathers’. It is the story of the six boys

in the statue. Boys not men.

The 1st guy putting the pole in the ground is Harlon Block. Harlon was an all-state football

player and along with all the senior members of the football team joined the Marine Corps.

Off to play another type of game. A game called ‘WAR.’ But it didn’t turn out to be a game. At

the age of 21, Harlon died with his intestines in his hands. I didn’t say that to gross you out, I

said it because many people stand here and talk about the glory of war. You need to know

that most of the boys fighting on Iwo Jima were 17, 18, & 19 years old. It was so hard that

those who made it home would not talk about it.

The next guy is Rene Gagnon from New Hampshire. Inside his helmet was a photo of his

girlfriend for protection because he was scared. He was only 18.

The third guy is Sgt. Mike Strank. Mike is my hero. He was everyone’s hero. They called

him the ‘old man’ because he was so old. He was 24. To motivate his boys in training camp, he

wouldn’t say let’s go kill some Japanese, or let’s die for our Country. He knew they were just

boys...instead he would say, ‘You do what I say, and I will get you home to your mothers.

The last guy on this side is Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona. Ira was one of those who

was able to walk off Iwo Jima. Ira and my Dad were called to the White House by President

Truman who told him “you’re a hero”. Ira told reporters “how can I feel like a hero when 250

of my buddies hit the island and only 27 of us walked off alive”.

Page 9: Knights of olumbus€¦ · 04.04.2019  · The Holy Spirit revealed he would not see death before he had seen the Messi-ah. The parents of Jesus brought Him to the temple and performed

Patriotism

He had such images of horror in his mind that caused him much pain. Hayes carried the pain

home with him and eventually died dead drunk, face down, drowned in a shallow puddle, at

the age of 32, ten yrs. after the picture was taken.

The next guy going around the statue, is Franklin Sousley from Hilltop, Kentucky. A fun-

loving hillbilly boy. His best friend who is now 70, told me, yeah, we fed 2 cows Epson salts.

Those cows crapped all night. He was a fun-loving hillbilly boy. Franklin died on Iwo Jima at 19.

When his mother received the telegram that he was dead, the neighbors could hear her cry-

ing all night. They lived a quarter mile away.

The next guy, going around the statue, is my dad, John Bradley, from Antigo, Wisconsin,

where I was raised. My dad lived until 1994 but would not give interviews. When Walter

Cronkite or the New York Times would call, we were trained to say, I’m sorry sir, my dad is not

home. He is in Canada fishing. No, we don’t know when he will be back. Never fished or was

in Canada. He did not want to talk to the press. My dad, like Ira Hayes, did not see himself as a

hero. He was a medic. A combat caregiver. On Iwo Jima he probably held over 200 boys as

they died. And when boys died on Iwo Jima, they writhed and screamed without enough

medication for the pain. My 3rd grade teacher told me at the time, that my dad was a hero.

When I told my father he said, the heroes on Iwo Jima are the ones

that DID NOT come back.

So that is the story about six nice young boys. Three of those

young boys died on Iwo Jima, and three came back as National He-

roes. Overall, 7,000 boys died on Iwo Jima in the worst battle in the

history of the Marine Corps. So, the monument is not just a piece of

metal with a flag sticking out of the top. It depicts the story of all the

heroes of the Battle of Iwo Jima, especially those who gave their lives

so that we can enjoy the freedom that we have. The freedom to say

and act the way we do. One more thing I learned at this time is if you

count the hands raising the flag their are 13. When the man who

made the statue was asked why there was 13 hands, he simply said, the 13th hand was the

hand of GOD. Most youths of today know nothing about Iwo Jima or WW II because it is not

taught.

Patriotism Military Service of SK Normand Ouellette

I enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in October 1961. I was sent to Lackland Air Force Base in Tex-

as for my boot training. After boot I was transferred to Tyndall Air Force Base in Panorama City,

Florida. I spent the remainder of my 4 year enlistment at Tyndall packing, crating and shipping

parts, mostly aircraft parts, to military bases all over the world. At one time we had to ship a hu-

man heart. Knowing how to pack and ship certain parts was interesting and at times difficult be-

cause of the sensitivity of the item.

The Cuban crisis was short but scary since we were so close to Cuba. Our Base was trans-

formed as the back-up Base for troops in case the situation got out of hand. The population on

base tripled over night. We never left our stations until the pullout of troops from our Base.

I attained the rank of Sargent and

was discharged in October 1965.

Being part of a team to defend our

country, which I love, makes me proud

to have served.
