Dear Brother Knights,

We are once again starting our season of Lent when we start to focus on

some sort of discipline or challenge that we mentally set for ourselves to

accomplish during these 40 days of Lent. It is also a time when we look to do

some charitable work for mankind and help the less fortunate in our society.

As such I would like to challenge all brothers and families to make an extra

effort to attend mass more frequently and spend some extra time in the

adoration chapel. Come out and join us for a meeting or help out at setup for

our community pancake breakfast or join us in organising or running some

events. March is our Outreach program month and we will be embarking on

new programs. Let’s try to reach out to someone in need and show

compassion towards them.

Our Holy Father urges us to rediscover our need as Catholics “to live in

fraternity” and to grow in “a fraternal love capable of seeing the sacred

grandeur of our neighbor, of finding God in every human being”.

In this light, Pope Francis writes: “I especially ask Christians in communities

throughout the world to offer a radiant and attractive witness of fraternal

communion. Let everyone admire how you care for one another, and how

you encourage and accompany one another”.

As Catholics and men of faith we have the advantage and ability to spread

the faith by our actions and kind deeds. We have many opportunities to

reach out to others even at work, social events and community works. Take

up the challenge and go forward and the Holy Spirit will be your guide.

May you and your family have a meaningful season of Lent.

God Bless Vivat Jesus! Kevin G. Mendonca Grand Knight Archbishop Duke Council 6855

FIELD AGENT’S MESSAGE

Jose P. Cabalu, FIC, CHS Field Agent

The Value of Life Insurance for Children

As a father, you worry about your children and do everything you can to protect them. You try to raise them right and make sure they are prepared to become adults. But have you ever thought about buying life insurance for your child?

When you insure a child, you are protecting his or her future. Did you know that one out of every six adults get rated, postponed, or denied for insurance coverage? If you purchase a policy for your child from the Knights of Columbus with a guaranteed purchase option, it guarantees that more insurance can be purchased for that child without proving insurability.

Unfortunately, as fathers we don’t have a crystal ball, and we don’t know what the future may have in store for our children’s

health. But did you know that right now you can purchase a child’s policy, in many cases, for less than $10 a month?

I’ve heard it said that people don’t want to “profit” from the death of a child, so they won’t purchase coverage on their children. God forbid something tragic happens, those funds can come in handy at a time when finances will be the last thing on a parent’s mind. I have never heard a story about someone who regretted buying coverage on their child.

Contact me today at 778-837-2317 or email me at [email protected] to discuss the many policy options for child plans, including 10- and 20-Pay life insurance.

Council, District & Regional

Basketball

Free Throw Championship

February 2014

Once again we held our Annual Basketball Free Throw Championship on Feb 8, 2014 at St Paul and invited the youth from the parish to come out and try their skills at the basketball hoops. We were pleased with the response from our parish. We also invited the other councils from District 23 to invite kids from the other parishes to come to St Paul and conduct their Council Free Throw and then combine all for the District Free Throw. We had a good response from 10681 and a few from 12861 and then proceeded to have our District competition. The following kids moved forward to the Regional Free throw that was held at St Mary in Vancouver on Feb 22, 2014.

We are pleased to report that among the 12 positions that were awarded, District 23 bagged 3 for the age group of 11 Girls Lauren Monteiro, Boys 13 Jerrick Palma and Girls 14 Megan Tolentino. We almost bagged another award for age 11 Andrew Estrada but we missed by just one point. We hope to do much better at our next Regional Free Throw. Thank you Bros. Manny Tolentino, Mel Ison, Francis Yong and Jonathan D’Cruz for your help in running the Council and District Free Throw Championship.

VALENTINE’S DAY DINNER DANCE

FEBRUARY 15, 2014

We held a Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance at our parish on February 15, 2014. It was attended by a crowd of

around 100 guests. It was mainly held to raise funds for the Canadian Wheelchair Foundation. We

appreciate all those that came out on Valentine’s Day to help with set up and decorate the hall and organise

the event. The beautiful decorations that added grandeur and glamour to the evening was all done and put

up by Gladys and Rudy Chamberland with full assistance from Bro Americo Silva. The evening was well

enjoyed by all who attended; there were plenty of door prizes, good food and a variety of music that

catered to all ages. In all it was a well appreciated Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance and all look forward to a

similar one next year. We are also grateful to those brothers and spouses who stayed back and helped us

setup for our Pancake Breakfast next morning. Your support and commitment is well appreciated.

The Knights of Columbus has been supporting this organisation since 2003 and has become a partner in providing this wonderful service to our brothers and sisters in this world. So far the foundation has been able to reach those that are stricken by War, Old Age, Sickness and other forms of calamites in this world and has delivered wheelchairs free of cost to places such as Cuba, Mexico, Poland, Philippines, Afghanistan, Iraq, Dominican Republic and also here at home in Canada and the USA just to name a few.

The Mission of this foundation is

- Raising awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities.

- Delivering mobility into the lives of those who have no means to acquire a wheelchair.

- Transforming lives through Mobility, and with it giving Freedom, Dignity & Hope.

If you would like to know more about this wonderful

organisation please visit the Canadian Wheelchair

Foundation Booth set up at each pancake

breakfast or visit the website www.cdnwheelchair.ca.

Our Wheelchair Drive has been growing steadily; at the end of 2013 we were able to deliver $6,000 that would buy 40 new wheelchairs for this worthy organisation. We are grateful to those brothers that have shown compassion and came forward to lend their monetary support, and to those friends and acquaintances that have put their trust in us and have donated generously for this cause.

We are still in need of all your compassion and generosity to reach our ultimate target of 100 wheelchairs and I am confident that all brothers and families will do our council proud by showing your support. Remember that the $150 you donate towards a new wheelchair not just gets a wheelchair to an individual but actually transforms their life for good and gives them an opportunity to lead a more meaningful life, thanks to your generosity.

Pancake Breakfast, from where it all began……

Back in November 1991 Bros Rudy Chamberland, Gerry Puchalski, John Fitzgibbon and Rod Winning worked on building the pancake breakfast grill in Bro Rudy and Gladys Chamberland’s garage that is being used even today.

A Big Thank You to these brothers who made our monthly pancake breakfast what it is today.

Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro Ferdinand, Blossom, Brinelle

& Alistair Sobrinho as being chosen the Family of the Month for February 2014. Bro Ferdi has been with

our council since 2007 and is a 4th degree member. He has been on our council in various positions and

was the treasurer of our council till 2012. Besides being on council he was also in charge of the

Registration for the BC and Yukon State Convention in 2013. Due to his job requirement he had to forgo

his position on convention and council issues.

Both Ferdi and Blossom are actively involved with the Dancercize program and take an active part in

majority of our council events, helping with planning, setup and participation. The children Alistair and

Brinelle can always be seen with them for Sunday masses and recently Bro Ferdi and daughter Brinelle

have taken on a new role of being Lectors for Sunday masses.

We are grateful to have members in our council that remain actively involved with council and parish

activities and find ways to help out whenever help is needed the most.

Thank you Sobrinho family for your hard work, dedication and commitment to our Council and the Parish.

It is truly an asset to have members that find ways to support our council and grow spiritually at the same

time. God Bless.

Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro Frank Pavan as being chosen the Knight of the Month for

February 2014. Bro Frank has been with the Knights of Columbus since 2006 and is a 3rd Degree member

and has been actively involved in many of our events. He is a regular at our Knights Choir and joins us once

a month at our 7.30 am Knights Choir Mass. He is also there every month for our pancake breakfast and can

be seen busy flipping pancakes for the parishioners from the early morning mass. At Christmas time he

dons on another role of Jolly Old Nick and can be seen making an appearance in his red outfit to hand our

candy canes for all good boys and girls. He is on hand at the Parish Picnic to help with cooking and serving

hot dogs and burgers.

Once Charity appeal tickets sales come around you can see him actively involved in mall sales. Besides this

he is there every Sunday at the 7.30 am mass helping with ushering and parish bulletin distribution.

It is a great pride to have such active members in our council and we are grateful for all Bro Frank does for

us. Thank you and God Bless.
