FAMILY OF THE MONTH: A LEGACY

By GK John Rovinski, Jr.The November Family of the Month is the

Beirne Family. It is appropriate to honor this hard working family for all they have done for EDW. Owen was always here making sure things got done and that everyone who walked through the door felt welcome. He is still missed and I doubt it will ever go away. However, Nick does the same thing. He works every day to make this place run. He goes out of his way for everyone and anyone who walks through the door. In Nick I see the same things I saw in Owen and in so many people at EDW, a servant’s heart.

GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGENovember finds us remembering our Blessed Saints and the

Holy Souls who have gone onto their Heavenly reward. It is a month filled with remembrance, gratitude and charity. As I write this, the Nationals look to claim the team’s First World Series Title, the club prepares for two of our largest charity events, JBL Family Fun Day and our Annual Charity Thanksgiving Dinner, and we are beginning to see Christmas and New Year’s just on the horizon.

But First Happy Thanksgiving! As my son, Jack would say “Let’s not be holiday skippers!” Though Thanksgiving Day

is not specifically a Catholic holy day, it certainly goes hand in hand with our life of faith. Spiritually speaking, we all know that gratitude is central to the Gospel message. Thanksgiving Day presents us with the perfect opportunity to look at this particular aspect of our faith. We are called to be eternally and deeply grateful.

We will never be grateful unless we see clearly all that God has done for us. It’s so easy in life to focus in on all the struggles we face and, as a result, to get down, depressed, frustrated and even angry at times. What’s far more challenging is to look beyond the crosses and burdens we face each day to see the abundance of grace and mercy given to us by our Lord. Unless we see that mercy and grace, we will struggle greatly with authentic gratitude.

Deo gratias, is a Latin term meaning, “Thanks be to God!” Think about all the different religions that give thanks to the Divine, be it the Jews or the Christians – it permeates everything we do. God is the GIVER of all gifts! How do we keep the spirit of gratitude alive within our hearts, for all the tough times we experience through the year, for the time we spend with family and friends, for the work we do to make a living, for the opportunities to help others, for those who have gone before us to heaven…Let us be truly thankful.

At EDW we are blessed beyond measure. We all enjoy the magnificent facilities, the hard work and dedication of our Columbus Club Staff, the Council Officers and Club Board, whom I have the privilege to work with, the events and activities that fill the year with a time honored rhythm, and the people that make up the EDW family. Those previously mentioned and the families and community served. We are all truly blessed to live here.

Please come out to the JBL Family Fun Day and enjoy your club. Make an effort to donate a Turkey for those in need. Give some Blood. Thank and Honor our Veterans! But most importantly, know that you are blessed and loved by God. No matter what is going in your life or the world at the moment you read this, take a moment to be still and feel God’s love. For that we should all be truly grateful.

Happy Thanksgiving!

NEW YEAR’S EVE GALA AT EDWIn case you hadn’t noticed - CY 2019 is fast winding

down. Hopefully many EDW members, Knight Life readers and others are already making plans to get together with friends in our main hall to celebrate and welcome in 2020 in style. This will be EDW’s 60th consecutive New Year’s Eve gala. Make plans now to be a part of this special celebration - at a very reasonable cost.

The evening starts at 6:30pm with a one-hour “Open-Bar” and hors d’oeuvres social period, while guests locate their table and table-mates, and the two bars. Note: complimentary liquor (mixed drinks) available only during this 1-hour “open bar” period. Thereafter - It’s BYOL. However, beer, wine and soda is included in ticket cost all evening. At 7:30 pm, EDW’s “Redcoats” will begin serving a 3 course dinner: soup, choice of 4 entrées: Prime Rib, Pork Tenderloin, Broiled Salmon; as well as a Vegetarian plate. From 9pm to (at least) 12:30 am, dance and enjoy the music of “Diamond Alley” a well-established, popular, local 5-piece band performing at EDW’s New Year’s Eve for the 3rd Straight Year!

Two ways to make reservations: 1. Stop in at Columbus Club office, during regular M-F hours, 8am to 4pm. CC staff will accept all credit cards, checks or even cash. Tickets available in CC office by early-November. You’ll be asked for your entrée selections at this time. 2. Second, easy method to make reservations: call Columbus Club office -703-536-9656, ext. 311. CC staff will accept all credit cards by phone. Again, you’ll be asked for your entrée selections at this time. You can then choose to stop in office during regular hours or you can elect to have your tickets placed for pick up in our lobby on New Year’s Eve. Ticket cost: same as last year: $120. per couple; $60 for a single. Checks made payable to Columbus Club of Arlington.

As with all previous New Year’s Eve’s at EDW, also included in ticket cost: beer, wine and soda all evening; a bottle of champagne at each table for your NYE toasts; several door prizes, and a continental breakfast (set out just before midnight. Questions, suggestions, or offers to help on the committee call Bob Muschamp (703) 489-2856.

NOVEMBERFINANCIAL SECRETARY MESSAGE

As we near the end of the calendar year, EDW Council will be mailing the annual dues notice at the beginning of December. Hopefully, the annual dues notice will not wind up “on the floor” or “in the circular file”. Your dues payment keeps you “in good standing” with the Knights of Columbus; and your Co-lumbus Club dues provides the money to support the Council Home and the

magnificent grounds that surround it.

Dues for 2020 are shown in the table below:

COUNCIL DUES

COLUMBUS CLUB

TOTAL

REGULAR $ 80.00 $ 73.00 $ 153.00

HONORARY $ 35.00 $ 73.00 $ 108.00

LIFE $ 0.00 $ 73.00 $ 73.00

UNDER 26 $ 0.00 $ 48.00 $ 48.00

There are two easy ways to pay your dues: (1) by check or (2) by credit card (no fee) on the EDW website. All members who have paid their dues by the Columbus Club Annual Meeting (January 2, 2020) are eligible to vote in the election of Columbus Club of-ficers and other matters that may be presented.

Fred C. Carmichael (96)August 13, 1923 – September 14, 2019

A fifty-two year EDW member, Fred went to his reward on September 14 and will be interred shortly in Arlington Cemetery.

Fred grew up in New Castle, IN and was drafted by the Army during WWII. Under George Patton’s Third Army Company F (Acorn Division) he advanced to Communication Sergeant. He survived the Battle of the Bulge with frozen feet and was awarded the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Battle Stars and the WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged from the Army with 50% disability in 1945 and married Christine Cloud on July 15, 1945.

Fred was a Federal Government Meat Inspector for 37 years and retired in 1979. He and his wife traveled all over the United States and Canada in an Airstream travel trailer and was the past President of the NORVA Airstream Club. Fred made friends anywhere he went and started every day with a positive outlook. He was an amazing dancer and an avid golfer and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
