Dear Brother Knights,
We have come to the end of summer and I am sure we all had a good and relaxing time and made the most of the long days. In all, I think we should be grateful l for the opportunities to spend time with friends and family or just take the kids out for the day and bond. These little things that we take for granted in our lives, have a huge impact on the less fortunate, who for many reasons are unable to experience such good times. We as Knights should always look out to help someone who is in need of something that we consider just basic or routine. As knights we should be proud because we can give of ourselves in terms of charity, friendship and fraternal support. Always wear your pin proudly and you will be amazed how many other brothers are there that you were not aware of. Recently on a family trip to the East I wore my pin and was shocked to know a lot of close friends and relatives who were members of this wonderful organization and are equally proud of what we do and stand for. I think we should all take time out and ponder why we joined the Knights of Columbus and how we can help to keep our faith and be an example for others to follow. In the next few months there will be lots of activities as we get back to full steam and will be looking forward to new brothers coming forward to take on new roles or commitments or just help out at the activities. I personally would encourage you to come to the General Meeting when you are not busy and if you need a ride or do not want to come alone, feel free to call a brother knight who will definitely find ways to bring you to the meetings or you can email/call me. Look forward to seeing you.
Vivat Jesus!

Raising Awareness about Life Insurance Since 2003, each September has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of the product among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that 76 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor. Sixty-eight percent of that same survey group said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family’s life insurance, retirement, disability income and long-term care needs. I’ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about “making the wrong decision.” Talk with me, and, afterwards, you’ll understand that the only wrong decision was not protecting your family’s future sooner. I’m at 778-837-2317 or [email protected].

Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro Americo and his wife Maria Silva as being chosen the Family of the Month for August 2012. Bro Americo has been with our council since 2002 and has been ever so active in all council activities. He has been a past grand knight. Besides our council Bro. Americo has been a 4th degree member and is always willing and available to volunteer whenever they need honor guards or colored guards for any occasion, be it close in town or hundreds of miles away, he is always there. Bro Americo still runs the Blood Clinic for Canadian Blood Services. He co-ordinates and supervises the Seniors Luncheon every Christmas season. He also coordinates the monthly family rosary. His wife Maria, has been a tremendous support not only to her husband but to the Knights, she can be seen helping at all major events. Thanks to her, we always have beautiful fresh flower arrangements at our events at very low costs. They both have been instrumental in the success of the annual family camping at Pt. Roberts. They attend mass on a regular basis and assist the parish office with other administrative duties. Congratulations and God Bless the Silva Family.
Brothers please join me in congratulating Bro. Godfrey D’souza as being chosen as Knight of the Month for August 2012. Bro. Godfrey has been a knight since 2009 and has been regular at Sunday mass, Lenten services and other devotions. Bro Godfrey has been helping with the Pancake Breakfast on a regular basis and takes on any duties with great interest and sense of responsibility. He helps out every year with our Charity Appeal mall sales and also personal sales of charity appeal tickets. He has been assisting a group of brother knights every Thursday with Bingo take-down that was passed onto our care by our Pastor. He is a regular volunteer along with his wife Loretta at our Annual Seniors Luncheon. He has been standing proxy at our Installation of Officers since the last two years and is very generous with his time for the knights. Congratulations Bro. Godfrey and thank you for your commitment and devotion to the Knights of Columbus.

Our Fundraiser for this month was the Polynesian Night. About 180 guests attended this
wonderful evening and most of them commented, it was “Full of Fun, Good Food and Plenty of
Dancing”. Everyone had a great time and will be looking forward to more fun events like
these. There were plenty of games and prizes and all went home happy. Thanks to all who
came forward and gave us their time in making this event a successful one.

In order to celebrate family week we all came together on Aug 19th at King George Park in Richmond, BC to spend some time outdoors and meet our fellow parishioners and also brother knights from other councils, we all had a great time with games, food and music. Our turnout was lower than expected due the weather conditions but nevertheless those that attended had a wonderful time.

Annual Family Camping, Point Roberts, WA
August 24 – 26, 2012
Our annual family camping trip at Point Roberts was held from Aug 24- 26, 2012. As always it was well organized by Bro. Americo and his wife Maria Silva and Bro. Edgar and his wife Priscilla Ursua. It was well attended by brother knights/spouses/children/families and friends. The weather was perfect for camping and we all had a great evening sitting around the campfire. A Big Thank You to Bro Americo for ensuring there were plenty of games for all ages who attended. All those that attended or camped had a wonderful time from early morning till late night. There was plenty to eat and a special thanks to Bros. Americo and Edgar for all the fresh fish and crabs that everyone enjoyed thoroughly. For all those members and their families who have never been on this trip, I strongly suggest that you make plans for next year and keep the days free as it’s an experience you will always remember. It’s great to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It gives you an opportunity to bond with your brother knights
and their families. PGK Bro. Doug and Edna Lorenzen of White Horse, Council 6232, drove over 24 hours from Whitehorse, Yukon to share in the 3 day event.

THE MOVIE: For Greater Glory
The True Story of Cristiada
A chronicle of the Cristeros War (1926-1929); a war by the people of Mexico against the atheistic Mexican government. This is a movie about heroes who stood up for freedom – in this case, religious freedom. It's not easy to make a heroic film, Considering these events actually happened and these are historical figures not fictional characters makes the movie that much more compelling. Some reviewers have argued that the movie is "too Catholic." Considering these were Catholics fighting, eventually, fighting violently, for their freedoms. Having been falsely accused of bombing, Blessed Miguel Pro was arrested and shot by a firing squad. Before the order to fire was given, he spread his arms in the form of a cross. His execution is depicted in the closing credits.
Partially financed by the Knights of Columbus, whose members in both the United States and Mexico were an integral part of the actual Cristeros Rebellion
Though we are still awaiting news of the release of this movie here in Canada. We will be ordering a DVD of the movie and planning on showing it here in the Lower Mainland at a later date. There are a lot of reviews on the movie and I think it is a movie we as Catholics should watch.
I will keep you updated once the movie is released here in Canada or when we decide to show the DVD.
