INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE

Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future

Matthew Seltzer (575) 936-7181

[email protected]

April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It’s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason.

Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive — guaranteed — sound to you?

Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee — along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember – absolute safety of principal) — really will provide you with peace of mind.

I am happy to meet with you – at your convenience and in your home – to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans.

CULTURE OF LIFE / YOUTH – Report of Culture of Life Director Harold Beeson:

Harold & Marge Beeson, Pro Life Couple

Hot and Cold for Life As a New Mexico Native I know the saying

if you don’t like the weather in New Mexico, wait five minutes and it will change. February started out warm and beautiful as we began our 40-days for life campaign on Ash Wednesday; then on Tuesday the 23 it turned cold; then on Saturday it was warm and toasty again. Through it all the Good people of Las Cruces, and especially Brother Knights, have stood vigil praying in front of Dion’s on Lohman to protest the Whole Woman’s Health Abortion Facility that is located directly behind Dion’s.

Who knows what the weather will bring in March – OK we know it is going to be windy (that is the one constant) but we will stand there praying for an end to abortion. In this year of mercy what greater mercy can there be than ending abortion? In our prayers and actions we are performing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The 40-days for life campaign runs through March 20th and if you haven’t done so please go to the vigil site and pray.

PWID & SPECIAL OLYMPICS / COMMUNITY – St Genevieve’s Council 13969 coordinates with the local Special Olympics Program: On Saturday, February 13th, we met with the local New Mexico State Special Olympics Director, Ronda Norfleet, and her assistant Darlene Kagel. They were conducting one of their regular Saturday morning get-togethers and bowling practices at Tin Pan Bowling Alley on Lohman Ave. Our council contributes yearly to the local Special Olympics. This year the Trustees have budgeted $750. In addition, we told Ronda that our council is willing to help with their activities. They gave us a list of upcoming activities, and encouraged us to keep abreast of them by going to their website: www.sonm.org. Brothers Alberto Grijalva and Jaime Flores have helped them over the past years. All interested Brothers are encouraged to volunteer! As shown in the photos below, we found a very active group at the bowling alley that Saturday morning. Ronda has been working with a large group of handicapped Special Olympics competitors for over 15 years, and is alive with enthusiasm. The group, shown in the photo on the right below, was equally enthusiastic and were very responsive to having their pictures taken. We left with a promise to Ronda that our Grand Knight Jesus would call her and invite the group to a Family Unity Night soon to receive a check for this year’s council contribution.

COUNCIL/COMMUNITY/CHURCH – Joint St. Genevieve Council 13969 and Las Cruces Council 1226 Corporate Communion: On Sunday, February 21st, our Council #13969 and Las Cruces Council #1226 celebrated a Corporate Communion together at the 9:30 AM Mass at St. Genevieve’s Church. This was our regular 3rd Sunday of the month Corporate Communion. It was indeed an honor and a pleasure to Adore and Receive Our Lord’s Body and Blood together with our Brothers from Council 1226. Immediately after Mass there was much socializing, talk, and solving of all the world’s problems, as you can see in the photos below. Then we all joined together for an old-fashioned Hispanic Breakfast at the nearby Nopalito Restaurant on Mesquite Ave.

CHURCH/COUNCIL – Fridays in Lent… Stations of the Cross and Meager Meal: Each Friday of Lent, everyone is invited to pray the Stations of the Cross at 5:30 PM at St. Genevieve’s Church. Immediately following, we share a meal of meatless soup in the conference room. The Knights of Columbus were asked to host the “Meager Meal” on Friday, February 19th. Our Ladies Auxiliary got together and prepared a variety of soups that were served, together with cheese and bread, after the Stations of the Cross. Once again this offered us an opportunity to pray, socialize, and to break bread together. The Ladies did an excellent job of preparing and serving the meal. As shown in the photos below, many Brothers and their families joined the parishioners for the Stations of the Cross and the “Meager Meal”. Grand Knight Jesus Frietze, State Executive Assistant Gilbert Perez, District Deputy Richard Archuleta, Faithful Navigator Jim Glasscock, Deacon/Brother Lou Roman, Sir Knight Andres Garcia, Ladies Auxiliary Treasurer Cecilia Flores, and many other Brother Knights were there. As usual, we saw the smiling faces of Delia Narvaez and Rebecca Archuleta there helping to serve. Also many parish familes and children came to pray, play, and eat!

CHURCH/COUNCIL – Ladies Bake Sale On the first Thursday of each month, the Ladies Auxiliary has a bake sale at the St. Genevieve’s Parish Bingo. The ladies, and some of our Knights, bake cakes and pastries, and sell them at the Parish Hall. They even have special customers, like Brother Eloy Martinez. Brother Eloy stocks up for the month, and shares the goodies with his grandchildren! All of the proceeds from the sale goes to the ladies’ favorite charities, St. Vincent de Paul and Support to Seminarians.
