FROM THE DESK OF THE GRAND KNIGHT My dear Brother Knights… As I

look at our calendar and see the

month of September passing and a

new month here before us with all

its opportunities to do God’s work as

a Brotherhood, I am reminded of the

help our Lord has given to us with

his Angles, always by our side help-

ing us to do the Fathers will on any

given day. The word “angel” comes

from angelus, Latin for

“messenger.” The Archangels Mi-

chael, Gabriel, and Raphael are

God’s envoys. Gabriel, “the

strength of God,” appears in the

Book of Daniel and again in Luke,

where he bears tidings of hope to

Zechariah and then to Mary. Tradi-

tion also identifies Gabriel as the

angel who appeared to Joseph, to the

shepherds, and the comforter of Je-

sus in the Garden of Gethsemane. In

Gabriel, God’s strength is manifest-

ed as tenderness: “Do not be afraid,”

he tells Mary and then to the shep-

herds, “I proclaim to you good news

of great joy .”

As Knights we work together as

partners, helping one another do the

good work here in our Parish and

community, but let us not forget that

we are not alone. We are guided by

special messengers that have our

backs as it is meant to be. The truth

is, we servants of God, could accom-

plish very little without help from

above.

FROM THE SUPREME KNIGHT

Since 2014, the Knights of Columbus has committed more than $20 million to aid Christians and those of other religions in their care. This money has provided food, shelter, clothing and medical care to thousands who lost everything in Iraq and Syria because they refused to give up their love of Christ. We have been proud to sup-port the medical clinic in Erbil operated by St. Elizabeth University of Health and Social Sciences in Bratisla-va, Slovakia. The young doctors and staff of this clinic were some of the first to treat Yazidi and Christian women escaping from sexual slavery at the hands of ISIS. Last year, we launched a special initiative to resettle the Iraqi town of Karamles. It had been a Christian town

for centuries before ISIS overran it, drove out its inhabitants, destroyed their homes and desecrated their churches. When their land was recaptured from ISIS, the Christians were ready to return to their homes. But their towns were in ruins. Who would help them rebuild? The first to act was the government of Hungary, which provided funds to rebuild the town of Teleskof. During a consultation with Hungarian government officials in Budapest, I discussed with them our similar ef-fort. Today, with $2 million from the Order, Karamles is being rebuilt and Christian families are returning home. Every Christian is a member of the Body of Christ. No Christian has been abandoned by the Lord. And no Christian should be abandoned by us. Their suffering continues. And our work must continue. This year’s pilgrim icon program will focus the eyes of our Church on the sacrifice of these communities. As St. John Paul II said in 2000: “The precious heritage which these courageous witnesses have passed down to us is a patrimony. … May (their) memory … grow still stronger! Let it be passed on from generation to generation, so that from it there may blossom a profound Christian renewal!” And to again focus the attention of our nation, this month we begin a new national awareness campaign. My brothers, these heroic Christians have not abandoned the field. And neither will we.

COLLEGE KNIGHTS BRING FAITH AND SERVICE TO CAMPUS

When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, Avery Murdock was grand knight of the council at Lamar University.

Working with many Knights in the area, the college council — which Murdock had helped found just the year before — pro-vided food, housed first responders, and gutted houses.

It was already second nature for the col-lege men to help.

“I can’t tell you how many houses we worked on,” he said. He shared that his brother Knights “just gave up whatever they had going on and went and helped out.”

It was Murdock’s older brother who first thought to bring the Knights of Columbus to Lamar University. Working with local Knights leaders, the brothers together formed Council 16464 on campus. As a current student, Murdock knows firsthand the difficulties college-aged men face.

“It’s a time where mom and dad aren’t there to bring you to church every Sun-day. Mom and dad aren’t there to tell you to go to confession and go help in the community.”

But, by being in the Knights, men on campus help each other live as practicing Catholics. They hold each other accounta-ble.

“I don’t have to put my faith aside. I don’t have to worry about that because I know I have this group of men that are going to hold me to it.”

Students find that attractive. When he asks prospective members why they want to join, he said 99 ¬¬-percent of the time they wish to grow in faith.

“We hear that time and time again,” he said. “It just becomes more and more ob-vious that the need for faith formation in college is very crucial.”

Even students in RCIA at Lamar Univer-sity are attracted by the faith and brother-hood in the council, expressing an interest in joining after they receive the sacra-ments.

“They see us and they say ‘when I be-come Catholic I want to do that. I want to join that,’” Murdock said.

The fruits of Council 16464’s labors are more than apparent. When they formed two years ago, they were the only pro-life group. Since then, other students formed a pro-life group that collaborates with the Knights.

Murdock will join hundreds of brother Knights this weekend as they gather for the 53rd College Councils Conference. The mission of the Knights of Columbus College Councils Program is to promote the moral, intellectual and spiritual devel-opment of the future leaders of civil socie-ty, the Order, and the Church through witness to the Gospel and dedication to the principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.
