Grand Knights Message By Bob Chaya

My Fellow Brother Knights,

Fraternity is the third principle of our Order. Web-ster defines fraternity as “a group sharing common interests or goals.” The month of November is not only the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving, but also take time out to honor those who proudly and bravely served in our Armed Forces. Those men and women who have served and are now serving are the epitome of what a fraternal organization is. They truly shared the common goal of defend-ing our country and were even willing to sacrifice their lives in its defense. Let us not forget and give them the recognition they richly deserve.

The Knights of Columbus is also a fraternal organization. We are a group of Catholic men united in the causes of serving our parish, our fellow pa-rishioners and our neighbors. Let us not forget that and continue to work toward being as good a fraternal organization as our military.

And lastly, as mentioned above, this month we celebrate Thanksgiving. It has been a difficult year for many. Job losses, loss of loved ones and so-cial distancing has taken its toll on all of us. Through it all, remember that God loves us and we are blessed and have much to be thankful for.

sword of sorrow, look upon us while, in our sickness we place

ourselves beside you on Calvary where your Jesus hangs.

KNIGHTS HONORED By Bob Chaya

Knight of the Month - September Jim Armstrong

Jim is a longtime member of Prince of Peace and Council 8482. He is a veteran of the Houston Police Department and serves both our parish and Council by providing police security at the various events sponsored by our Council.

Family of the Month - September Tim & Sandy Thibodeau

Tim and Sandra serve our parish in numerous ways. They are prominent players in the ACTS community, with each one of them hav-ing served as Retreat Directors. Tim also serves as an advisor to the ACTS team mem-bers that give faith share talks at the retreats. Tim and Sandra quietly give of their time, talent and treasure to support the Prince of Peace Gala each year to help make it successful.

Calling All Knights

As members of Knights of Columbus Council 8482, we extend the invitation to encourage your wives and daughters (over the age of 18) to become a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas in Court of the Holy Family #2597 at Prince of Peace.

Members of the Court work together with the Knights at many of the fund-raisers such as the Mardi Gras Party and New Year’s Eve party where they share the profits and sell desserts after the fish frys at the Community Center during Lent.

This is a great opportunity to have couples work together to support the

many programs in which the Council and Court are involved. Court of the

Holy Family participates in prayers, service projects and donates monies to

charitable causes. The Council and Court sponsor scholarships to graduating

Seniors each year. Both the Council and Court join in donating time and

funds to support Texas Disaster Relief, American Wheelchair Association,

Habitat for Humanity, Coalition for Life, EWTN and many other projects.

Monthly Tamale Sales By Brian Gray

Sales this month continue to be about the same as previous months since going online thanks in part to $215 (minus fees) in donations! We sold 60 dozen tamales to 20 households and had 4 delivery drivers.

We had 2 individuals adding donations to their purchases and one providing a sizable donation without purchasing tamales.

We hope that the Fall months will continue to increase sales, and we need to find ways to continue to broaden our advertising reach to let people know that we are selling tamales. I would like to continue to encourage the use of Facebook share tools as well as encourage our brother Knights to email or call their friends to let them know that we sell tamales and deliver to their homes. We are willing to deliver any-where in the Greater Houston area within reason.

The church has been very supportive in providing Facebook and bulletin announcements. The parish will currently not let us sell tamales after Mass on campus, however, I would like to work with them to see if we can have stations setup outside the doors after Mass to collect tamale pre-orders the week before we deliver the tamales. Thanks, Sammy Sedita, for that great idea!

Please let me know if you have any questions and support us by using the link below or email me at [email protected] or call 832-767-9465. We are also taking orders through a link on the front page of the Council 8482 website at www.kofc8482.org.

Trunk-or-Treat By Tony Pickett Brother Knights from Council 8482 and ladies of Catholic Daughters Court of the Holy Family #2597 co-sponsored a big Halloween party for Prince of Peace families and the community at-large on Halloween day Saturday Octo-ber 31 from 2 to 5 pm in the North parking lot at Prince of Peace. There were about 15 cars and trunks decorated for Halloween with Knights and ladies handing out treats to the kids. An estimated 300 kids and their parents trick or treated from trunk to trunk. God provided the sunshine and tempera-tures in the 70's to make it a perfect day. We were making a lot of noise and having so much fun that Fr. Ryan came by to see what was going on. Look-ing forward to next year! Thanks to all who helped or participated in this great community event: Frank Ferraro, Tom Downey, Clay & Faye Evans, Bob Chaya, Patrick & Bernie Boyle, Hank & Diana Walker, Larry & Barbara Hogan, Jim McBane, Jim & Lori Short, Ed Carney, Jim Martinez, Jeff Martinez, Bessie Dycus, Mike Chidalek, Fernando Flores and Richard Hixon.

Insurance Message by Kevin Anglin

“We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable serv-ant, Fr. Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of Your holy will.” How many tens of millions, hundreds of millions of times has our loving God heard this sentence from the prayer for Fr. McGivney’s can-onization? Asking only to fulfill God’s holy will; re-quested humbly. No doubt, you, like I, have been say-ing this prayer of supplication for years. Now those prayers have been answered as our

Venerable Founder becomes our Blessed Founder. The journey began December 18, 1997 when the Cause for Sainthood was opened in Hartford, Connecticut by Archbishop Daniel Cronin. Nearly five years later the official document, the Positio, outlining the case for Fr. McGivney’s cause was sent to Rome. On March 15, 2008 Fr. McGivney was declared “Venerable” indicating he lived a life of heroic virtue. This year on May 27, Pope Francis authorized a decree that a miracle attributed to Fr. McGivney’s intercession has been ap-proved. October 2020 will long be remembered as the month Fr. McGivney’s beatification Mass was cele-brated at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford.

Spotlighting our founder and his reasons for founding the Order; i.e., to strengthen men in their faith and to provide for the financial needs of families overwhelmed by illness or death of the breadwinner, this spotlight will draw more Catholic men to join with us. Our Order is an immense force for good in this world with the billions of dollars donated to worthy causes over the past decade, strengthening our fraternal bonds with acts of charity. The Knights of Columbus helps us husbands and fathers not only fortify our faith, but also pro-vides an opportunity for us to protect our families. Is it significant that the approved miracle involved the son of one of our general agents from our insurance program?

I like to think so. When Patrick McGivney died unexpectedly, young Michael had to leave the seminary to help provide for his family. He and his family struggled through the loss of his father and then as the curate at St. Mary’s he saw parishioners facing similar situations. He saw a need and he took action. He organized; he led, he inspired. He was concerned with both the spiritual and the temporal well-being of those around him.

Speaking of being a man of action, now is the time for you to take action. You will soon receive, if you have not yet already received it, the 2020 Fraternal Survey. It may be filled out in paper form or online. Whether on paper or online, please take a minute to complete it. It will be prefilled with much of your information to make it a snap to complete. It will provide information that will help me serve you better. There is a very in-formative insert included in the survey packet. Please take a minute to review that, too.

I consider it a worthy calling to carry on the work of our Blessed Founder. It’s been my great pleasure to work with many of you to help you protect your family and I look forward to continuing to serve you. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks to you for all the good works you carry out in the name of

the Order. Your acts of charity are even more critical considering this current pandemic.

Vivat Jesus!

Life Chairman Report By Patrick Boyle

Brother Knights, the month of October was pro-life month, and we begin joining with many parish organizations through the Parish Pro Life Council to pray a Rosary after each Saturday and Sunday evening 5 PM Mass. A number of Knights have participated and prayed with us.

Below is a photo of one of the nine bilingual “Pro-Life” Rosaries showing over 90 pa-rishioners gathered under the flags in front of Prince of Peace Church praying together on October 25th. This was a great turnout and truly our Mother Mary at work touching all of our hearts.

I was privileged to lead the Rosary that Sunday. Brother Knights who participated were Clay Evans, Chuck Stancil, Bob Chaya, Larry Hogan, Richard Hixon, Kevin Dean, Mike Velez, Todd Dorn, Deacon Kevin Cascarelli and Deacon Ken Henry.

Please remember the intentions of the Pro-Life Movement in your pray-ers daily to “Build our Society to Respect Life from Conception to Natu-ral Death."

In upcoming months, particularly in January, we are planning some events both here in Houston and at the Right to Life March held every year in Austin to pray for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and a shut-down of the abortion industry, mainly Planned Parenthood.

Please watch the Knightbeat for announcements of these events where you will have an opportunity to show support through participation and prayer. Please join us!

Because of the uncertainties brought about by the ongoing pandemic, we have not been able to secure a suitable location for the 2021 Winter Exemplification. Virtually all the suitable loca-

Official Uniform of the Fourth Degree

Message from the Supreme Knight Carl Anderson Brother Knights:

We are all aware of the troubling events that are occurring today, including at-tacks on statues of historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass and our Order's namesake, Christopher Columbus. Statues of saints have also been vandalized, including those honoring St. Junípero Serra, St. Louis and even the Blessed Virgin Mary, and houses of worship and other religious symbols have been attacked. These are not merely attacks on statues and history. They are increasingly at-tacks on Catholics and people of faith.

In the late 19th century, the Knights of Columbus took its name at a time of intense anti-Catholicism. Our founding members wanted to show that Catholics played an essential role in the exploration and development of America since its earliest days, and that a Catholic could be both a good citizen and a good Catholic.

However, anti-Catholicism persisted. In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan tried to stop Columbus Day celebrations and opposed Columbus statues simply because Columbus was a Catholic. We opposed the KKK then and have continued to stand up against bigotry directed at Catholics and others.

We stood up against the persecution of Catholics in Mexico in the 1920s, spoke out for the Jews of Germany in the 1930s and worked for religious freedom behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Today, we are rebuilding Christian communities in the Middle East that were targeted for genocide. Each of us can be proud of our history of standing up for the most vulnerable among us.

While our faith calls us to be respectful of different perspectives, acts of vandalism are crimes against all who cherish democracy and mutual respect The Knights of Columbus remains firm in its condemnation of all forms of racism and violence, including political violence. With churches, statues, and religious symbols sub-ject to vandalism and attack, we call upon elected officials and leaders at every level to defend the religious freedom of all.

Vivat Jesus! Carl A. Anderson Supreme Knight

Fr. Michael McGivney, ‘Holy Priest’ and Knights of Columbus Founder, Beatified (From the State Website) (Continued from Page 1) “Fr. McGivney’s life is an illustration of how a holy priest can provide the necessary and intimate connection, so crucial in the life and mission of a parish,” Tobin said. He described McGivney as a priest who loved his flock, and was happy to see them work to-gether as a community. “The signature accomplishment for which he is remembered, founding the Knights of Columbus, grew out of his ministry as a parish priest,” Tobin added.

“This great brotherhood of 2 million now spanning the globe was born from the pastoral ingenuity of a parish priest to respond to the twin challenges faced by the people he served. Because he knew his people well, so well.” “We accept that like him, God calls each one of us in our own day and our own way, to be vessels of mercy, and so, enter into our heavenly inheritance.”

Cardinals Sean O’Malley of Boston and Timothy Dolan of New York were cardinal concelebrators of the Mass. Several other arch-bishops and bishops, including representatives from the Ukrainian Catholic Church, were also present.

Pope Francis said that McGivney’s “zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel and generous concern for his brothers and sisters,” that “made him an outstanding witness of Christian solidarity and fraternal assistance.”

The pope concluded that the Connecticut priest “henceforth be given the title blessed.” The letter was dated September 13, 2020.

The date selected for McGivney’s feast, August 13, is the day between his birth, which was August 12, 1852, and his death, which was August 14, 1890.

Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore read an English translation of the letter. McGivney was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s cathedral in 1877.

A tapestry of Father McGivney’s portrait was unveiled in the cathedral’s sanctuary immediately after the letter was read.

Before the letter was read, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson read a biographical letter of McGivney’s life, and detailed his earthly ministry.

After the portrait was unveiled, Michael “Mikey” McGivney Schachle, accompanied by his parents and many of his siblings, pre-sented a monstrance containing a relic of McGivney to Cardinal Tobin. Mikey Schaecle’s live birth after a prenatal diagnosis of fetal hydrops, a rare, typically fatal, condition, was confirmed by the Vatican to be a miracle attributed to the intercession of Bl. McGivney.

Archbishop Leonard Blair of Hartford read a letter of thanks to Tobin for presiding over the beatification Mass, and requested that Tobin relay his thanks to Pope Francis.

“I believe that Fr. McGivney is truly Pope Francis’ kind of priest,” said Blair. “A model of his time of closeness to Christ Jesus on the peripheries of life and society.”

In his homily, Tobin said that early Christians, weary due to the demands of a Christian life, were consoled that there was a “cloud of witnesses who would give them courage to go on” and reminding them that their fidelity would be rewarded in heaven.

“In his beautiful reflection on holiness Pope Francis dares to name some of those witnesses. Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Gideon, and others,” said Tobin.

“Today, in the name of the Church, Pope Francis recognizes one more face among those witnesses: the serene and youthful counte-nance of Fr. Michael Joseph McGivney.”

Today, explained Tobin, is a celebration of the faithfulness of God to the body of His Son, the Church. He said that the beatification of McGivney coincided with “timely signs of God’s providential care that can speak in a personal way to each one of us, especially in this moment of our history.”

McGivney, said Tobin, was someone who “worked to keep families united in dignity, and security,” and took special care for mem-bers of his flock who were immigrants to the United States.

“We are in the presence of an apostle, who cared for victims of an epidemic, before he himself would die of the disease,” said Tobin. “We acknowledge gratefully the providence of God by confirming in the holiness of this witness by the miraculous cure of an unborn child, healed in utero of a fatal, multi-organ failure, after prayer by his family to Fr. McGivney.”

“We praise God for the timeliness of the celebration, because 130 years after his death, the brief life of this holy man speaks elo-quently to our own path to holiness. We should listen to his testimony,” said Tobin.

While August 13 is the date of McGivney’s feast in the Archdiocese of Hartford, priests outside the archdiocese will be permitted to celebrate votive Masses for Knights of Columbus gatherings on this date with permission of their bishops.

Blair closed the Mass by thanking those who had assisted with the beatification process and the logistics of planning and broadcast-ing the Mass amid a pandemic. He requested that people pray daily for McGivney’s continued intercession in the world. “First, that with Blessed Michael McGivney as our model, and with his intercession, that many more men will heed God’s call to serve as priests,” said Blair.

“And second, that at Blessed Michael McGivney’s intercession, we may be blessed with a further miracle leading to his canonization as a saint for the whole Church.”

Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court of the Holy Family #2597 (By Diana Walker, Regent)

LADIES: Please join us for Spiritual Growth and Education!

The Court of the Holy Family #2597 has already begun our 2020-2021 year. We participated in the Mercy Ministry Gala and Golf Tourna-ment and are looking forward to our participation with the Adopt-A-Family program again this year. We are not going to let COVID-19 keep us down – where there is a will, there is a way.

The Court worked with members of the Knights of Columbus helping with the Trunk or Treat held in the North parking lot at Prince of Peace on Saturday October 31. Approximately 300 people attended this event. Chil-dren walked from trunk to trunk capturing lots of great candies and treats. Thank you to the Court members who helped to make this a very successful event.

If your husband is not a Knight of Columbus, encourage him to look into joining this fraternal order of Catholic gentlemen This is an excellent way that you and your husband can work together on the many projects of both the Knights and CDA.

The church facilities are still unavailable due to COVID-19, so we will continue holding our meetings virtually for the time being. Our next meeting will be Wednesday, November 18th at 6:45 PM. You are invited to join us to learn what we are all about; you do not need to already be a mem-ber to join us. The Dial-In number is (425) 436-6380. When prompted, en-ter the Access Code 278-542 to join the meeting.

History and Symbolism of the Advent Wreath by Patrice Fagnant-Macarthur, Catholic Exchange

The lights of the candles on the Advent Wreath break through the dark-ness, reminding us of the Light of Christ that we anticipate during this holy season. Where did this tradition come from, of lighting four candles in an evergreen wreath to mark the weeks preceding Christmas? Like many of our Church traditions, the use of candles in the midst of late fall and winter was originally a pagan tradition. Rev. William Saunders, who wrote an article in the “Arlington Catholic Herald” on this topic, states that “pre-Germanic peoples used wreaths with lit candles during the dark and cold December days as a sign of hope in the future warm and extended sunlight days of spring.” In a simi-lar vein, Scandinavians “lighted candles [that] were placed around a wheel, and prayers were offered to the god of light to turn the ‘wheel of the earth’ back toward the sun to lengthen the days and restore warmth.”

In the middle ages, the Germanic peoples began incorporating a lighted wreath into the Christian season of Ad-vent. It didn’t gain widespread popularity until the 1800s and it wasn’t until the 1900s that German immigrants brought the tradition to America. The Advent Wreath is very symbolic. The evergreens used for the wreath itself are a reminder of continuous life. The shaping of them into a circle reinforces that meaning. The circle is also a sign of everlasting life as well as the eternity of God.

The four candles used, three purple and one pink, mark the Sundays of Advent before Christmas. The purple candles are reminders that this should be a time of prayer and sacrifice to prepare us for the second coming of Christ. On the third Sunday, the pink candle is lit to announce Gaudete Sunday, a Sunday of rejoicing for Christ is coming near. With the lighting of that candle, the light has won out over the darkness (three candles lit vs. the one that remains unlit).

Various meanings have been assigned to the four candles. One interpretation has each candle representing 4000 years, the Biblical time between Adam and Eve and the coming of Christ. In another interpretation, the first candle represents the patriarchs, the second the prophets, the third reminds us of John the Baptist, and the fourth of Mary, the mother of Jesus. They have also been described as the prophets’ candle, the Bethlehem Candle, the shepherds’ candle, and the angels’ candle. A fifth white candle in the center representing Christ can also be used. It is lit on Christmas Eve as a remem-brance of Christ coming into the world. Sometimes, all the other candles of the wreath are removed and re-placed with white candles on Christmas.

The Advent Wreath serves as a powerful visual reminder of the holiness of the season. The light of the candles invite us to quiet ourselves during this busy time and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. Whether at home or at Church, it provides an invitation to wait and pray in hopeful anticipation for the coming of Christ. We are called to welcome the light of Christ into our lives.
