Grand Knight’s Report By Mike Kebr March 2020 Volume 24, Issue 9 D ear Brothers, In these unprecedented times, I encourage each of you to remain calm, healthy and strong. Please continue to be smart in everything you do. We need to remain strong for our families, friends and the community. This is also a time to remain vigilant in our prayer life. As knights we are dedi- cated to Our Blessed Mother, Mary. If you recall, we were all invested with a rosary when we went through our Admissions (First) Degree and we made a promise to carry it with us and pray it often. That is what I am reminding you all to do. Set some time aside each day, to pray it with your family. For many, these times are uncertain and many may find themselves at home. No matter where you find yourselves in the coming weeks, please know that we are all in this together. We will make it through this time TOGETHER as Brothers and fellow knights. To that end, I encourage everyone one of us to reach out to each other, make sure we are checking on those that are at greatest risk or that cannot get out and about. These times also require changes in how we do things for the near future. As you know all “in person“events have been cancelled and Supreme has sent out a mandate, and rightfully so, that all in person meetings be cancelled and the format be changed either to a web conference or conference call. We as officers had our first test of this format this past Sat- urday. Our Worthy DD and Chancellor set up a cou- ple of conference calls, first for the Grand Knights of his District and then for the officers of our council. D ear Brothers, In these unprecedented times, I encourage

each of you to remain calm, healthy and strong. Please

continue to be smart in everything you do. We need

to remain strong for our families,

friends and the community. This is

also a time to remain vigilant in our

prayer life. As knights we are dedi-

cated to Our Blessed Mother, Mary.

If you recall, we were all invested

with a rosary when we went through

our Admissions (First) Degree and

we made a promise to carry it with us and pray it

often. That is what I am reminding you all to do. Set

some time aside each day, to pray it with your family.

For many, these times are uncertain and many may

find themselves at home. No matter where you find

yourselves in the coming weeks, please know that we

are all in this together. We will make it through this

time TOGETHER as Brothers and fellow knights. To

that end, I encourage everyone one of us to reach out

to each other, make sure we are checking on those

that are at greatest risk or that cannot get out and

about. These times also require changes in how we

do things for the near future. As you know all “in

person“events have been cancelled and Supreme has

sent out a mandate, and rightfully so, that all in person

meetings be cancelled and the format be changed

either to a web conference or conference call. We as

officers had our first test of this format this past Sat-

urday. Our Worthy DD and Chancellor set up a cou-

ple of conference calls, first for the Grand Knights of

his District and then for the officers of our council.

We discussed how we plan on continuing business

going forward along as some ideas on how we all can

stay connected during these times. Our April Business

meeting on April 7th will most likely be done via con-

ference call. Please keep an eye out for more details.

In addition, we received news that our State Conven-

tion will be held via conference call or web-

conference. We will be reaching out to those mem-

bers that we do not have email addresses for and to

confirm telephone numbers. If you would like to make

sure we have a valid or correct email address and

contact information, such as phone number, please

reach out to me directly or one of the officers. We

have been utilizing the use of Flocknote as a way of

sending out council communications. Flocknote gives

each user an option to receive communication via

email or text message. If you have any questions re-

garding registering for Flocknote please contact one

of the officers or myself.

We are still moving forward with the Officer nomina-

When joining the Knights of Columbus, a new mem-

ber is given three items, membership card, lapel pin

and Rosary. This is not just some swag or merch as

the stuff usual associated with a sports gathering or

social club. That later item, Rosary is a tool to a ful-

filling path of Practical Catholicism.

With the global events around us including the un-

precedent suspension of Mass, this is the time to be

reacquainted with the what, why and how of that

simple spiritual tool. The word rosary

During this critical time, we need to re-

member that the phrase “Act of God” is

being thrown around haphazardly. We as

Knights, who are a “Band of Brothers” need

to band together defend our Father, and

what he truly is about. He is a kind and

merciful. He sacrificed his only begotten son

to breach the chasm that was created be-

tween us and him when the Fall of Man

occurred, to give us the opportunity to be

in Heaven. Bad things happen, we know it

was never intended to be this way, but it is.

When someone blames God for this time

ask, this question “Why would someone

who sacrificed his only begotten son for us

what to do this? Remember Satan is the

deceiver, the master of lies. He is the one

who twists situations to moves us away

from our Father, who loves us.” Where you go from that point in the conversation is up

to you, but I trust the Holy Spirit will help

us all find the proper words.

In the meantime, pray the Rosary, when you

can. Be thankful you are not alone, we have

each other, we are a true “Band of Broth-

ers”. Do not hesitate to inform others that

you are a Knight of Columbus, a Defender

of the Faith.

In closing, my inspiration for this article is

from the video series, “Into the Breach”,

which can be found on www.KofC.org, it is

worth watching. I

will not close my

article as I normally

do. I will just say

“May the Peace of

Christ be with you

The physical simplicity of the Rosary beads is

emblematic of its purpose to lead to prayer.

This does not require, any of the technology

of today and can be fulfilled in this chilling

time of social distancing. The Knight of Co-

lumbus keeps that Rosary with him and re-

quires no special time or place to say the

prayers. On March 29th there will not be a

Memorial Mass for the Deceased Members

of Council 3880 but that does not limit the

moment of prayer. Find a place to hear an

inner voice or view of His creation and if the

weather is conducive stand outside on that

Sunday morning, long enough to say a dec-

ade.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you;

blessed are you among women,

and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners

now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

And from the gentle repetition of each pray-

er be mindful of our deceased members,

their faith in their clergy, their love of Our

Lady and how each lived a life in recognition

of Tempus Fugit, Memento Mori.

Troop and Pack 127 By Dan O’Connell

Scouting For Food

The Pack and Troop participated in Scouting for Food 2020. The

Pack distributed 1,000 bags around to the homes surrounding St.

Thomas Parish on February 29th. The next Saturday, March 7th, the

Troop went back to collect

the bags. The results were

outstanding. We collected

2,455 items of food/

sundries/paper goods

weighing in at 2,161

pounds. We also collected

$235 in donations. This

was all delivered to the

Crystal Lake Food Pantry

for distribution to the

community. All the scout-

ing units in Crystal Lake delivered a total of 4,607 pounds of food to

the pantry.

The picture shows some of the scouts, scouters and parents that

assisted, and you may notice a few of your fellow Knights (PGK

Marty Zopp, Stu Collar, Yours Truly and Brother John Walsh be-

hind the camera). Tracey Schocket (far left) was our coordinator.

All total between the Pack and Troop, we had about 55 volunteers

from both groups that made this happen.

BLUE and GOLD The Pack celebrated the crossing over of the Arrow Of Light

(AOL) Scouts on February 29th. This is an honor for Cub Scouts

who are proceeding onto Scouts BSA. They actually crossover a

bridge as they leave the Pack and are met by the Troop they have

chosen to join. Fifteen AOL’s decided to continue their scouting

career joining 5 different troops in the area. Unfortunately, despite

all of our efforts, we only received one AOL from the Pack. Of note however, the Pack did crossover their first female AOL

and it just so happened to be the granddaughter of Sir Knight Ken

Schutz of our Council/Assembly. Raelee joined Troop 1329 out of

Woodstock which has 12 girls involved in the Scouts BSA program

and are full swing with out-ings, camping and other fun

activities for Raelee to get

involved in. Ken, and his wife

Loretta, were very active in

Troop 127 with their son and

Eagle Scout, Brother Knight

Glenn Schutz. I asked if he

had been “volunteered” back

into helping out Troop 1329

and with a chuckle said he is

an Assistant Scoutmaster but

had to tell Loretta he would

take it easy on outings and

adventures. Raelee hopes to

be a Den Chief with her previous girl den in Pack 127. With Ken’s

guidance and encouragement along with her parents and Loretta

too, perhaps she will attain Eagle Scout as well.

Thank you all for your continued support of

Scouting in this difficult time. The National

Organization continues to wind its way

through its difficulties and hopefully will find

resolution that will bring healing and justice

for all involved. May you and your family

Dear Brother Knights! PADS is on again! After a meeting it was

agreed that

Fr. McCormick Council 3880 will continue the worthy tradition

started by Brother John L Orso and led for many years by Broth-

ers PGK John M. Orso and Steve Bright. There was some concern

earlier after the hosting church and major sponsor were changed.

Pioneer Center is the new Sponsor, and the church that we will be

serving dinners at is the new Willow Crystal Lake. Linda from

Bethany will still assist us in coordinating the serving for a while

longer. Our only change, really, is that we do not need to have the

food at Willow until between 6:30 and 6:45 PM. Everyone involved

at this point thinks this will ease our burden. >> 6

seminarians. After the checks are cashed, a report will be compiled

Not a Food Pantry article, but “food” for thought

Brothers,

My parents are somewhere looking at me dealing with this pan-

demic.

As a son of children who were teens during the Depression, I'm

sure they would look at me and chuckle.

They would ask, do you have bread? I would answer the freezer is

full. Can you afford fresh fruit and vegetables? Yes the stores are

fully stocked. Milk? Yes. Meat? Yes. Are you feeling ok? Yes. So, no

soup lines? No. Living in a house with brothers and sisters? No

me and the dog. You can afford food? Yes you asked that already.

So, what's the hardship? I may run out of toilet in a few weeks. A

guy’s why are you on the floor laughing? My dad would ask do you

get the Trib? Yes. I found that softer than the Sears catalog. Oh

they're not in business anymore. They were put out of business by

someone who came up with an idea for mail order. Huh? Anyway

you'll do just fine

The United States is the greatest country on earth.

It just takes a true crisis for us to come together. It

took a dictator one who wanted to suppress gene

pools for the US to come together and crush his

world triumph. In the words of Hirohito when he

learned about the Peril Harbor attack, “ We've

woke the sleeping giant “. This pandemic has rea-

wakened the sleeping giant.

Stay safe once this is over we can celebrate just like VE and VJ day.

I’ll bring the Corona and the limes.

We had the Exemplification of the Fourth Degree on February

22nd. We have five new Sir Knights join our Assembly. A total of

180 candidates and one dog (Harvey, a Golden Retriever service

dog) participated in the ceremony that was held in Lisle, Illinois.

The next Exemplification is scheduled for Saturday, May 16th, 2020

at St. Edna Parish at 2525 N Arlington Heights Road in Arlington

Heights, IL. Please see the Master’s website (http://

www.4thdegreeillinoisdistrict1.com/Exemplification.html) for infor-

mation and reservation forms. We are not sure, with the Novel

Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, if the event will take place as

scheduled. More news to follow as the pandemic continues to

unfold.

At the February event, we had one of our Assembly Sir Knights

recognized with the Master’s Award. DD PFN Steve Zalas received

the award at the banquet on Saturday evening. Congratulations

Steve. Well deserved.

As a result of COVID-19, the March Assembly meeting was can-

celled. Please watch your emails for the status of the April meeting

which is currently set of April 8th at 7:30 PM at Holy Apostle in

McHenry.

There is a lot going on in the world around us. As you are well aware

we are under a “Stay at Home Order” and for good reason. As mem-

bers of the Pro Life community we must remember we are Pro Life in

all areas of life from abortion to euthanasia to corona virus we fight to

save lives. The corona virus has sent shockwaves around the Globe.

States with major metropolises have enacted “Stay at Home Order”

including shutting down all non essential businesses. This order was

set into motion due to a large number of cases being within major

cities, where people are in mass number, and confined to small areas.

The “Stay at Home Order” came after people were still gathering as if

there was no corona virus. According to Governor Cuomo of New

York people with underlying medical condition and over 70 are the

people dying at much larger rate. Most people from 18 to 59 who are

healthy and catch the virus can have it and not even know they are

carriers. They are however highly contagious and spreading the virus

to others including the elderly. People with compromised immune

systems should not leave there home for any reason during the time

of great tribulation for mankind. I have also seen numerous reports

saying that young people should stay away from the grandparents until

further notice.

At this moment in time it is very charitable to others that we follow

what our leaders are telling us. By staying quarantined we are stopping

the spread of the virus making us part of the solution not the prob-

lem. It is imperative that you do your daily rosary for the whole

world, for our leaders, first responders, our youth, our elderly, busi-

ness owners, Italy, New York, California, Chicago, and the sick. This

virus is very painful and the people who die from it are alone. They

are dying without their families and without the sacraments. Call on

the entire heavenly court to intercede before the Throne of God for

the illumination of the minds of those tasked with finding the cure. Remember under the “Stay at Home Order” we are still within Lent

so let us consider this time where we are withdrawn from the world,

in the desert of our homes, as a time united with Christ in the desert.

Let us pray and fast for the healing of our sick brothers and sisters

throughout the world not just physically/bodily sickness but more

importantly spiritually sickness. Let us daily do Lectio Divina with our children and talk to them about the scripture readings. Read Matthew

4 v1-11 as a family and enter more deeply into Christ’s preparation

for the greatest sacrifice ever given on behalf of another. Christ the

spotless lamb of the living God gives up his very life to pay the infinite

debt owed to God for the iniquities of the entire world. Let us give

thanks and praise to Almighty God that we have homes, heat, food,

family, health, wealth, the Church, the sacraments, the Priesthood, and

all the other things that come from GOD alone, the provider of all

things.

Remember you are sacrificing much to save lives of others at this very

critical moment in time. Jesus is always in charge and his works can be

very mysterious at times but always proclaim…. Jesus – I Trust In you,

Jesus – I Trust in you, Jesus – I Trust in you. From our family to yours

– LOVE!

Right to Life Organizations

It's been 10 days since our Supreme Knight issued the order to sus-

pend business meetings and other face-to-face council activities. But

our Knight's continue to respond admirably to adversity. We were

quick to start a Novena, which the parish promptly adopted. The

food pantry started a new, controlled process, which allowed the

Knights to serve under the leadership of Past Grand Knights Vince

Esposito and John Stefani. Locally, the Knights from Saint Elizabeth

Ann Seton conducted their blood drive. Would you have expected

anything less?

It just makes sense that these men are continuing to do the good

work needed. That is who we are. That's why I became a Knight and

why I would expect other men to join as well. "We are Catholic men

building a bridge back to faith. There is much work to be done in this

world. Good work." For the safety of our members, we need to be

creative, change, grow, and do things differently. But we will continue

the good work of the order. Adversity is just another chance for us

to share The Lords message and lead in our faith and deeds.

With this, WE NEED YOUR HELP! As the first dinner starts on

Sunday, October 28th, we are playing catch-up! Here is the tenta-

tive schedule:

As you can see, we have a few dates open, but this is after I called

and implored those listed, who have done this event for many years.

I have myself listed for October because it is soon… but if anyone

wants that date, please let me know! Anyone else in interested in

ANY date, or who wants to get their feet wet (along with any and

all friends and family members!) give me a call…

make sure we are still going to do this… it is one more way of be-

As the world confronts the COVID-19 pandem-

ic, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson shares the

actions and responses taken by the Knights of

Columbus. 3/16/2020

Dear Brother Knight, As the world confronts the COVID-19 pandemic, I wanted to take

this opportunity to share with you the actions and responses taken

by the Knights of Columbus.

The coronavirus disease is not the first pandemic the Knights of

Columbus has faced. In the late nineteenth century, and again in

1918, the Knights remained strong and active despite such situa-

tions. And together, we will do so again this time.

We know that this period will be difficult in various ways for every-

one, and we want to assure you that the Knights of Columbus is

fully committed to you and your family, and has taken the steps

necessary to continue our important work on your behalf – from

protecting the faith and financial stability of members’ families, to

helping members put their faith into action by providing important

charitable service within their communities.

Although to our knowledge, no staff at the Knights of Columbus

Supreme Council or Museum in New Haven or at the Saint John

Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C., have tested positive for

COVID-19, we have implemented remote operations for most

staff, allowing our business processes, customer service and frater-

nal support to continue their important work uninterrupted, while

simultaneously protecting the health of our employees and reducing

the risk of community spread of this illness, which is often facilitat-

ed by having large groups of people in close proximity to one an-

other.

Furthermore, our sustainable investment strategy means that our

exposure to current stock market volatility is limited, and we re-

main extremely strong financially. With that strength, and the

strength that comes from committed employees, we remain posi-

tioned and ready to serve our brother Knights. Of course, our

agents and our customer service team also remain available to help

you with any insurance or related financial needs that you may

have. As we implement new systems to serve you and respond to a

higher volume of inquiries than usual during this period, it is possi-

ble that wait and turnaround times may increase.

In addition to what we are doing at the Supreme Council headquar-

ters, many brother Knights have asked how they can help in their

own communities. We suggest the following:

During this period, we urge every member and his family to pray

the Supreme Council's novena based on the prayer of Pope Francis

(printable or video prayer), as well

as a prayer being promoted by the

United States Conference of Catho-

lic Bishops.

Help keep yourself, your families

and your communities safe by can-

celling all “in person” Knights of

Columbus meetings and activities at the local or state level until

otherwise indicated. This disease spreads when groups of people

gather, so it is important that we avoid activities that could spread

this illness. Councils should pursue online and/or teleconferencing

options for meetings, fundraising, etc. until the danger has passed.

The Supreme Council will be providing additional information on

such options shortly.

Leave no Knight – or neighbor – behind. If members of your coun-

cil – or community – are elderly or have underlying medical condi-

tions, please ensure that they have enough food. If you or others in

your council have food to spare, offer to drop something off on

their doorstep or to shop online for them.

Give blood. Many communities are facing blood shortages. Those

not being recommended to isolate themselves due to illness, age or

underlying conditions should consider giving blood. National blood

drives were pioneered by the Knights of Columbus in the 1930s,

and this lifesaving activity remains an important aspect of our chari-

table work today.

As we move through this pandemic together, you can rest assured

that the Knights of Columbus will be there for you. We will pro-

vide regular updates in the days ahead, and we will remain joined

with you in prayer and in service to our neighbors in need. May God bless you, and keep you and your loved ones healthy and

safe.

CANCELLED The next and last Memorial Mass of the 2019 calendar year is Sun-

day December 29th. Please plan on joining your Brother Knights for

the 9:00 AM Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

All Knights and their FAMILIES are invited to attend and please

wear your blue shirt. Past Grand Knights have this occasion to wear

the white shirt. The lapel pin is a suitable alternative and know in

your pocket is your Rosary. The entire right center section of pews as you face the altar is reserved for Father McCormick Council.

Our Council banner will be posted at the altar and we will be pre-

senting the gifts in a Cross formation. An impressive sight to all

who attend! As always, the Council provides coffee and doughnuts in the com-

munity center after Mass. Servers always needed.

We have had a good turnout this year at the 5th Sunday Memorial

Mass so please mark your calendar for December 29th to continue

this event of note and prayer in the 65th year of our Council.
