We all know that once November arrives, Thanksgiving is not far behind. Thanksgiving is a time of reflection for all of us. It‘s an opportunity to remember those individuals in our lives who have had an impact on us. Many times we go throughout our daily lives without giving much thought to telling people how much we appreciate their ongoing support, friendship, and love. Our faculty and staff feel blessed to work with students who touch our lives each and every day. I personally give thanks to all of our faculty/staff, parents, supporters and stakeholders and wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving! PARENT ADVISORY BOARD (PAB): The PAB meets once a month with O‘Gorman‘s principal. PAB is a non-policy making board that discusses various events and topics, provides input, and acts as a ―sounding board‖ to the principal. PARENT INFORMATION

Important Reminder Regarding Attendance:

If your student is going to be absent from school for one or more days, a parent/guardian must call or send a

note with the student to the attendance office at least a day in advance stating the reason and days for the dis-

missal. The student then receives an extended absence form which needs to be signed by all of the student‘s

teachers. Notifying the student‘s teachers of the absence does not excuse the absence. This can only be ac-

complished through notifying the attendance office. Attendance office phone number is 575-3310.

Attendance Reminder

The KnightDrive Fundraiser will once again provide families with an opportunity to earn SAGE

Scholars Tuition Rewards through Great American Opportunities (GAO). We work with GAO by

having our students sell magazines as well as wide range of items that would make great Christmas

gifts. By simply participating in our KnightDrive program and selling magazines or other items to

support our school system, students may earn up to $2,500 in Tuition Credit for college...every

year! By selling $100, students earn $1,000 in Tuition Rewards Points! By selling $250, students

earn $2,500 in Tuition Rewards Points! Seniors are not eligible as the last chance to register points

earned with Tuition Rewards is June 30th...prior to their senior year of high school

The SAGE Scholars Tuition Rewards program is a college saving plan like no other. By enrolling in

Tuition Rewards, students will earn guaranteed minimum scholarships at over 365 participating pri-

vate colleges and universities across America! The following area colleges are participating in this

program: Creighton University, Briar Cliff University, Morningside College, Benedictine Col-

lege, University of Mary, Augustana University, University of St. Thomas, Saint Mary’s Uni-

Q. Do the points expire? A. No Q. What is the maximum number of Tuition Rewards points a student may use? A. The student is limited to 25% of a member college’s tuition. Rewards are spread equally over a pro-jected four years of attendance (and are never issued in cash). Q. Are the points transferrable? A. Yes. There is an ability to register and transfer points to other children in the family. Q. Who keeps track of the points? A. SAGE has the database and registration system to keep track of the points for families/students. Q. Why do member colleges participate in Tuition Rewards? A. Member Colleges are seeking to reach and attract talented and motivated prospective students. Q. Is participation in Tuition Rewards a guarantee of admission into member colleges? A. Congratulations to Nathaniel Pekas who was selected to be a member of the Bands of

America (BOA) Honor Band in the 2017 Tournament of Roses Parade.

The following students were selected as members of the 2016 All-City Jazz Ensemble: Stephen Osterberg,

In this seminar, which has been delivered to more than one million teens on five continents, Jason reveals

the compelling vision of God‘s plan for human sexuality and presents an uplifting case to practicing the vir-

tue of chastity by addressing the issues that teens struggle with most, such as sexual pressure, pornography,

modesty, and starting over. Jason offers encouragement for teens to maintain their purity or begin again if

they‘ve made mistakes in the past.

COUNSELING DEPARTMENT NEWS

SENIORS should now be in the planning phase of the college application process. The month of November should be

used to narrow down choices and complete applications. Although most colleges will accept applications until Christmas,

students are encouraged to submit them prior to Thanksgiving break. To help with this process, the counselors have

visited the senior English classes to discuss timelines and the college application process. Mr. Hagg and Mrs. Jones are

also available to visit with students individually.

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID has changed for seniors entering college in the fall of 2017. You can apply for financial

aid as of October 1st and use 2015 tax return. Most financial aid deadlines will remain as in the past, but families are

encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible.

SENIOR ATHLETES who plan to participate in college athletics must register with the NCAA

(www.eligibilitycenter.org) or NAIA (www.playnaia.org) to confirm academic eligibility for college programs. See Mr.

Hagg for more information.

JOB SHADOWING: The Shadow Ed representative (Linda Rodman) is at our school during 4B and 5C lunch periods

every Friday. Students interested in shadowing a particular career field should stop by the Counseling Office or contact

her at [email protected].

CAREER/COLLEGE INFORMATION: www.SDMyLife.com is an online college and career information system

available to all students. Come to the Counseling Office if you need your log-in information.

CAREER/COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHT FOR SOPHOMORE PARENTS AND STUDENTS: will be held

on Monday, November 14th at 6:30 p.m. in the Lorang Theatre. This presentation is designed to inform parents about

various aspects of counseling services, including high school course planning, post-high planning, career information, and

suggested timelines to follow. We feel it would be valuable for both parent and student to attend.

PSAT: The results of the PSAT will be available in early December. It was administered at O‘Gorman on October 19th

to 79 sophomores & juniors. The Counseling Department will give the results to the students as soon as they are

available.

PEER RELATIONS REPORTING is available on the OGHS homepage. Use this tool to report concerns you have

about peers or yourself. Remember Mrs. Jones and Mr. Hagg‘s doors are always open to talk about personal, family, or

academic questions and concerns you have. You can walk in or make an appointment with Mrs. Knight if we are not

available.

It is recommended that students take the ACT for the first time during the spring of their junior year, preferably the April

Seniors must take the ACT or the SAT for college admission. It is usually not necessary to take both tests. Juniors

and seniors interested in either of these tests should stop by the Counseling Office for registration information and

deadlines. Questions can be addressed to the Counseling Office at 575-3320.

COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES SCHEDULED: These visits give students an idea of admission requirements,

costs, programs available, and timelines to follow. All college visits are listed in the daily student bulletin and posters are

displayed with dates and times. Students must get a pass from the Counseling Office no later than 8:00 a.m. on the

DUAL CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES: O‘Gorman High School offers several options for high school students to receive

college credit for courses. Several courses offered at O‘Gorman can be taken for college credit through our articulation

with Mount Marty College. Online registration for the spring semester of the Mount Marty College dual credit program

opens on November 7 and closes at 5:00 p.m. on January 6, 2016. Visit www.mtmc.edu and click on Academics – Dual
