KNIGHT OF THE MONTH

Bill Wester is our September Knight of the Month. Bill has done an outstanding job in this essential Council role. He spent numerous hours providing accurate and transparent financial statements and maintained a detailed approach to facilitate our charitable operations. In my short tenure as Grand Knight, Bill has been a tremendous partner and resource.

Thank you Bill for everything.

VOLUNTEER for SHEPHERD

CENTER

Aging in place is a gradual process; and crossing the line to NO Driving Allowed means a significant upheaval in daily life. The Shepherd's Center of McLean Arlington Falls Church, an affiliate of The Shepherd's Center of America, tries to help seniors stay in their own home and live independently as long as possible.

We are an all-volunteer organization with NO time commitment asked of our volunteers who drive our clients to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping, pharmacy and other essential places they need to go at no cost to them. We also do friendly visits and minor handy helper projects. We work through a computer program call "Ride Scheduler" that allows the volunteers to see the rides needed for the next month and then pick any that they want to take.

This is a wonderful way to help others, to meet some interesting seniors who in some cases have no on in the area, and also to meet other great volunteers. Last year we did over 2500 one-way rides. You see that we can always use more volunteers and would be extremely happy to talk to you about our organization.

Please callus at 703-506-2199 to have someone contact you and be sure to look at our website at www.scmafc. org. We hope to hear from you.

GRAND KNIGHT'S MESSAGE When September rolls around, I always think of

that song "See you in September" by The Tempos and later covered by The Happenings. The summer is wrapping up and the Arlington community will return from time away and start the upcoming school year. Please join us as we say good-bye to summer 2018. Labor Day Mass on the 3rd will be in the Lower Lounge at 11:00 a.m. and the Picnic on the grounds begins at 12:00 p.m.

As turn from summer relaxation and return to work and school, the Church theme for

September follows this autumn shift. Since man is both a spiritual and physical being, the Church provides for the needs of man in his everyday life. The Church's liturgy and feasts in many areas reflect the four seasons of the year (spring, summer, fall and winter). The months of August, September, October and November are part of the harvest season, and as Christians we recall God's constant protection over his people and give thanksgiving for the year's harvest.

As we start to get back to our normal routines, please take time to consider the blessings that we all have in our lives and what we can share with others. Consider the use of your time, talent, or treasure in any of the wonderful ways EDW helps others. Get into the spirit of fall with the Octoberfest Supper Club on the 28th.

If you were traveling, welcome home. If you spent the summer at the pool, there are plenty of things going on at EDW all year long. Keep checking the Knight Life and the website for more information. Hope to see you around campus.

CRAB Feast Returns to EDW

An annual EDW tradition has returned this year and was

once again a huge success, with over 150 participants. The Fish Club hosted the event. Led by Fish Club president Chris Hudson and assisted by members Jay Byrnes and John Brett and Columbus Club staff Peter, Nicholas, Renee and Maria.

Volunteers Needed for Saint James Bereavement Ministry

Saint James parish is creating a bereavement ministry. The mission of this ministry is to console parishioners and family members of parishioners who have suffered the loss of a loved one. During this difficult time, our ministers will be the face of Christian friendship by visiting with them, praying with, and praying for them. The ministry will extend condolences on behalf of the parish by:

Praying for the souls of the deceased and their families

Presenting a card (provided by the rectory) to the spouses

Attending the funeral mass or memorial service at Saint James

Providing practical information on vendors and venues in the city for people seeking ideas for a reception or a wake (to be included in the condolence card)

Providing contact information of professional grief counselors, and on ... line or printed grief and bereavement resources (included In the condolence card)

Attending the annual mass of remembrance in November at the parish

Acknowledging the anniversary of the death of a loved one with a card or phone call, as appropriate.

If interested, please call the rectory at 703-532-8815.

Our Guarantees Set Us Apart

Knights of Columbus life insurance offers something

precious few other financial products can — guarantees.

As long as you pay your premiums, the policy proceeds

will be there for your beneficiaries should something

happen to you. That's peace of mind, and that's what we

offer with every product in our portfolio.

We guarantee the cash value in your whole life

policies will be there.

We guarantee the rates on your term insurance.

We guarantee the rate and your principal in our

retirement annuities.

On top of those product guarantees, I guarantee that I will offer professional, high-quality service that you would expect from our organization.

Our Order is among the highest rated life insurers in North America. AM Best has rated the Knights of Columbus "A+, Superior" for 40 consecutive years. It's a testament to our track record for excellence and security.

I would suggest that a principal reason that we were

able to achieve those accolades is because we remain steadfastly committed to the vision of Venerable Father

Michael J. McGivney by providing life insurance by brother Knights for brother Knights.

That commitment is an essential core value of the Knights of Columbus, and our core values permeate all levels of our organization. We pledge to serve our brother Knights, and their families, according to our Golden Rule: "In all professional relationships, we pledge to the following rule of conduct: I shall, in light of all conditions surrounding those I serve, render that service which, under the same circumstances, I would apply to myself."

Let's talk soon to discuss how our products can

bring that peace of mind to you and your family.

Ladies U-Knighted News Jo Balsamo Wood

Can you hear the ring of school bells in the distance? Can you feel just a nip of cooler weather as the sun sets? Hope you all are enjoying the final days of sum-mer. It's hard to believe that September is already here! With just a few more weeks left of summer, the warm season is winding down and busy fall schedules are just around the corner. Labor Day is upon us and football season is starting.

SAVE THE DATE!!!! We are pleased to announce that plans are underway for the 15th Annual "Adult's Only" Halloween party beginning at 9:00 on Saturday, October 27. (See ad in this month's Knight Life) LUK members, fellow Knights, and the Columbus Club are working together to offer you a special experi-ence. Again, this year, we will have GREAT food and an EXCELLENT band... so start thinking about those costumes and stay tuned for more information in the October Knight Life. The festivities begin at 9:00 p.m., with free food, cash bar, costume contest, and a live band. This is an event that you don't want to miss. Plans ae now being drawn up for another EDW blood drive on either 3rd Sunday of October - 21st or on Nov. 18th, so role up those sleeves and help out.
