Year Overview.

Numeracy Strands to be covered this year:

- Number and Place Value

- Addition and Subtraction of more than 4- digit numbers

- Multiplication and Division of up to 4- digit numbers

- Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages

- Geometry

- Measurement

- Statistics

Resources to be used include:

- Standardized Text Book

- Mental Maths Book

- Standardized Tests

- Various Internet Resources (e.g., www.primaryresources.co.uk)

Homework will be completed daily, with emphasis on Problem Solving activities Wednesdays and

Mental Maths activities on Thursdays.

Class Rules:

If a pupil is absent, it is his/her responsibility to get his/her homework assignment from a

classmate and submit it when he/she returns.

Homework left at home will be considered as not being done.

If a test or deadline on an assignment is missed, the pupil will receive 0% unless he/she can

provide a letter from a medical doctor to show the reason that he/she was not able to attend.

It is the pupil’s responsibility to come to class with the necessary books and other items- they are

of no value sitting at home.

Pupils are to use the washrooms before school and during scheduled breaks. They are not to be

asking to leave class to use the washroom except in ‘emergencies’ which should not occur often.

Pupils are to line up immediately at the start of the day or at break time as soon as they hear the

bell.

No food and/or drink is allowed into class.

Term 1

Week 1

Number System: Numbers and Place value

Counting and understanding number

Use knowledge of place value and addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers to derive sums and differences and doubles and halves of decimals (e.g. 6.5 ± 2.7, half of 5.6, double 0.34)

Count from any given number in whole number and decimal steps, extending beyond zero when counting backwards; relate the numbers to their position on a number line

Week 2 Number System: Addition and Subtraction

add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction)

Week 3 Number System: Multiplication and Division

identify multiples and factors, including finding all factor pairs of a number, and common factors of two numbers

know and use the vocabulary of prime numbers, prime factors and composite (non- prime) numbers

Week 4 Number System: Multiplication and Division

divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context

multiply and divide whole numbers and those involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000

recognise and use square numbers and cube numbers, and the notation for squared (2) and cubed (3)

Week 5 Number System: Ordering and comparing Number sequences

Count from any given number in whole number and decimal steps, extending beyond zero when counting backwards; relate the numbers to their position on a number line

recognize and describe number patterns, including two- and three-digit multiples of 2, 5 or 10, recognizing their patterns and using these to make predictions; make general statements, using words to describe a functional

Week 6 Number System: Rounding

round a number with one or two decimal places to the nearest integer or tenth; convert between centimetres and millimetres or metres, then between millimetres and metres, and metres and kilometres, explaining methods

Use knowledge of rounding, place value, number facts and inverse

operations to estimate and check calculations

Week 7 Number System: Fractions (including decimals and percentages)

compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number

identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths

recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other and write mathematical statements > 1 as a mixed number [for example,

2/5 + 4/5 = 6/5= 1 1/5 ]

Week 8 Number System: Fractions (including decimals and percentages)

add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number

multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams

Week 9 Number System: Fractions (including decimals and percentages)

read and write decimal numbers as fractions [for example, 0.71 = 71/100 ]

recognise and use thousandths and relate them to tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents

round decimals with two decimal places to the nearest whole number and to one decimal place

Week 10 Geometry: Properties of shape identify 3-D shapes, including cubes and other cuboids, from 2-D representations

know angles are measured in degrees: estimate and compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles

draw given angles, and measure them in degrees (o)

Week 11 Measurement solve problems involving converting between units of time

use all four operations to solve problems involving measure [for example, length, mass, volume, money] using decimal notation, including scaling.

Week 12 Data Handling: Statistics Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables.

Term 2

Week 1 Number System: Roman Numerals

read Roman numerals to 1000 (M) and recognise years written in Roman numerals

Week 2 Number System: Addition and Subtraction

add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written

methods (columnar addition and subtraction)

Week 3 Number System: Addition and Subtraction

add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers

Week 4 Number System: Addition and Subtraction

Solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.

Week 5 Number System: Fractions (including decimals and percentages)

recognise the per cent symbol (%) and understand that per cent relates to ‘number of parts per hundred’, and write percentages as a fraction with denominator 100, and as a decimal

Solve problems which require knowing percentage and decimal equivalents of 1/2, 1/4 , 1/5 , 2/5 , 4/5 and those fractions with a denominator of a multiple of 10 or 25.
